SEASON N BRIEF Manatee County football fans saw one of the finest teams MCHS has ever fielded during the i956 season. At one time, the Canes were rated the number two team in the state. Opening our season with a 39-O victory over Chamberlain, we proceeded to tame the Plant Panthers in a l3-l2 thriller. Gaining momentum, we beat the Clearwater Tornados and the Northeast Vik- ings by scores of 45-7 and 4l-O. We deadlocked Hillsborough, the team rated to win the Western Conference, 6-6. Our invasion of St. Petersburg resulted in another tie, this one l3-l3. Undaunted, the Canes returned to their own field beating Miami Tech 26-O in the tirst meeting of these two teams. Homecoming fans watched us down Jefferson High School 4l-O. Closing our season, was our traditional Sarasota game. We sank the Sarasota Sailors 39'O. Final standing showed Manatee tied with Hillsborough for the fourth Western Crown. This is the first tie in the short history of the conference. Snappy, precision drills of the Drill Team added color to each game, Season's repertoire included the Mexican Hat Dance, the Charleston, a gun drill a nd a flag routine. Rousing marches provided by the 82 piece Hurricane Band kept fans humming long after the season's whistles were blown.
