It should be special. This is the reason that SOMETHING TO REMEMBER is the theme for the 1988 yearbook. These are the four best years for a teenager. Freshmen are the “new kids on the block”, it is the first year of high school life. They are looking forward to the next three years. Sophomores are awaiting their drivers license and the thrill of ordering their class rings. Juniors have only one more year until graduation. Their class rings have arrived, and they are busy making preparations for the Prom. For the Seniors, this last year flies by. Graduation has just been a fantasy, but too quickly becomes reality. They are now ready for the challenge of college, work or just the “real world”. You never forget your high school years. They are like old favorite songs you always cherish, so as you will see, old son g titles are throughout this book. Many or almost all of them will bring back memories for you and your parents. They answered ... “The teachers are pretty nice; if only I could learn the stuff.” — Cynthia Price “There’s been lots of school spirit, and I ' ll have lots of memories.” — Tracey Floyd It’s been great. We ' ve got new teachers, and they’re more interesting than the ones we’ve had before.” — Greg Hughes Top: Say Chicken! Lower Left: Home¬ coming Week brings out the zany side of people. Some¬ times getting a date is easily accomplished, and sometimes ... well, you know how it is. But not to worry; here are a few recommended tips by Dr. Lilly Lovelane that are guaranteed to win you a date (or at least a terrific friendship) with that someone special. In lunch you are sitting be¬ side the prettiest redhead you have ever seen. Do you ... a. ask her if you can count her freckles? b. tell her you are dy¬ ing of a rare disease and can be cured only if she swats you across the face with her ice¬ cream sandwich? or c. ask her what brand of toothpaste she uses? Answer — c. You will get immediate results. You are at home looking out the window when this gor¬ geous hunk comes jogging past your house. Do you ... a. tell him you’re doing an arti¬ cle for Newsweek and ask him if he prefers cement or black¬ top driveways, b. invite him in¬ side for a bowl of Quaker Oat¬ meal, c. ask him to tell you if your shingles match the color scheme of the dining room in the painting on your living room wall. Answer — b. It’s worked for me for years, and the company isn’t doing all that bad either. You have finally managed to get a dance with the girl of your dreams. You dip her and do you ... a. swing her back and forth mopping the Gym floor with her hair? b. jerk her back up and twirl her twice for every time she tells you to stop? or c. suddenly let go and apologize for being so clumsy. Answer — c. It’s an excellent opportu¬ nity to find out how she feels about you. Score 5 points for each cor¬ rect answer and another 20 for each letter I that is in your name. Dr. Lovelane hopes that these tips are beneficial, and as always she feels that thank-yous are unnecessary. In the year 3000 B.C. Caveman Slick visited Caveman Pete. He noticed that he and Pete’s rock wagons looked very much alike. In fact he couldn’t tell the dif¬ ference. Over some Dino-nuggets they contemplated the problem. Pete decided to affix on the rear of his wagon a sign saying DINO-DUDE while Slick chose the words ME SLICK. Henceforth, the two never mixed their wagons up again and lived happily ever after. Today the tradition lives on. License plates are personalized giving people a chance to display their names, feelings, and other information. To our caveman buddies from long ago... we salute you! Homecoming 19 20 Faculty Division Page FACULTY At 2:15 p.m., students leave the building in a hurry to get to work, to get home, or just to get out of school. Within a matter of minutes, the halls are quiet, but the school is not totally empty. In each classroom there are special people who would love to go home but their day is not over yet. As a mat¬ ter of fact, their day has just begun. There are papers to check, tests to write out, grades to record, lesson plans to write, etc ... Late nights of writing, reading, and planning are not foreign to these teachers. Faculty Division Page 21 Mrs. Jeannette N. Pillsbury, Director of Instruction FACULTY Franklin D. Being a Fresh¬ man can be difficult and somewhat intimidating. Un¬ fortunately, students don’t realize how important Freshmen are to high school. They help older stu¬ dents look back and see how far they have come. They also bring fresh ideas and ambitions from their earlier years in school. Starting in high school can be exciting; having classes with Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors; having your own locker in the main locker hall; taking classes that are so different than in earlier years; and just sim¬ ply being labeled “a high schooler.” Freshmen Division Page 71 The first year of high school is always a hard one. But this year’s Freshman s Class seems to be taking it in stride. Adjusting to new schedules, meeting new classmates and making new friends are all part of “School Life” at Manassas Park High. The team finished seventh in the district, which was the highest position in several years. Senior guard and Co-Captain Kim Holt was selected 2nd Team All District. She averaged 16 points a game, which led the district in scoring. The 1987 team was young and inexperienced but with a year under their belts, good things can be expected for 1988. After the first two difficult losses to tough, larger schools, the Cougars came up with a surprising win. The Cougars defeated cross¬ town opponent AA Osbourn High School 7-3. Osbourn had beaten another cross-town rival AAA Stonewall the previous week. So, what can we assume? Dare we say that MPHS is better than the infa¬ mous “Stonewall”? After the thrill¬ ing victory, the Cougars had a di¬ sappointing loss to the ’87 State Runner Up and District Champion, Strausburg. The Cougars then won the next two games, ending the season at a record of 4-6. They gave of their best played well. Other Seniors played important roles, also. Junior Carl Peace and Sophomore Ray Bentham gained valuable experience. The Freshmen were important members and played key roles in the team’s development. Though the team was 1-19, all of the players showed great enthusiasm and heart all year long. “I’m very proud of all of them,” said Coach Miller. “It was a tough season but they gave one hundred percent at every practice and every game. The team has to content with a lack of height and depth on the bench. In all areas except the win loss record, this season could be considered a success. The young men on this team learned how to successfully run a set offense versus changing defenses. As the season progressed, the shooting improved as did team play. They learned that teamwork can overcome great odds. These young men learned a great deal and it will be up to them to continue to improve in order to achieve the winning edge for the next season. They did not concern them¬ selves with any one type of re¬ ligion. The Goodnews Club, sponsored by Mrs. Corbo, met during homeroom every Mon¬ day and Wednesday. They were different from other clubs in that they did not have officers. After much thought and individual prayers, it was decided that God was the President and Head of them. Therefore, there was no need for officers with God to see to their every need. The Goodnews Club promoted fellowship among every student. They were there to help anyone with problems, to pray, and to seek God’s help together. Best of all, however, was that they had their door open to everyone who was willing to share God’s joy and wonder. Tremendous work went into making this yearbook a success. We have put many extra hours into pro¬ ducing this year’s publication. Special thanks goes to Mrs. White for being such a great yearbook advisor. Co-editor — Elvi Romero, Business Managers — Freda Metz and Christine Price, and the rest of the staff worked diligently throughout the year. The staff and I have kept you in our minds while producing this book. We have tried to put as many memories for you, espe¬ cially you graduating Seniors since this is your last year. Whether you are a Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior, I hope that you will always keep your special memories of Ma¬ nassas Park close to your heart. May God bless you and keep you safe. Love, Kyung R. Sung Editor-in-Chief What a privilege it has been to be the Co-editor of this 1987- 1988 yearbook! It has been quite a task to use “pictures” and “captions” to create a book capturing everything we as a school have experienced. I feel that those of us on the yearbook staff have reached our goal and have made a memorable keepsake for all those from Manassas Park to enjoy. With all of Mrs. White ' s patience and encouraging words, the hard work from the staff, and with some help from ‘Up above,’ we are proud to present this yearbook to our school. I hope that as you read through this book today and twenty years from today, you feel the excitement and pride that all of us at MPHS have. I am so proud to have been a part of MPHS these past four years. I hope that all of you who continue your years here at MP keep our Cougar name alive and that someday you will be able to look back on your years here and be as proud as I am. I wish the best to all of you. I hope that wherever life takes you that you find happiness and peace. I hope most of all that as you travel down life ' s path: you never forget the smile I tried so hard to keep on my face, the positive outlook I had on life, the true peace and happiness I always seemed to have, and most im¬ portantly that you remember I was this way because I personal¬ ly knew The Man who makes life worth living for.. .
