For this reason, X marks the spot has been chosen for the theme of the yearbook, Reflections 1987. Manassas Park High School certainly is a major point of interest to everyone. This year the land around our school is turning into an industrial community; and inside our school, our wrestling state championship banners are fluttering in anticipation. Varsity Boys’ Basketball, second in the region last year, plans another fantastic season. The Seniors are excited about this year as they look forward to graduation. The underclassmen are spirited and en¬ thusiastic, too. Things are happening here, and it’s our drive, courage, and ambition that’s tearing a blazing trail through Manassas Park. At MPHS 10 — Student Life Students Of course, school isn’t the only thing on students’ minds; after the bell rings, many of us don’t head for General Hospital. In¬ stead, some head for work. Whether it’s a job at a restaurant like McDonald’s or Wendy’s, or working for IBM, it’s still money. And nobody knows better how to spend it than us high-schoolers. Some hard-earned money is spent on clothes or saving for a car, or for car-owners the ever-dreaded insurance payments. But whatever they spent their money on, the thing is, they had it, and it feels good to cash that paycheck after all the work you put into your job. Tim Rutkowski straightens the carts at Giant. The Seniors used the Peanuts, the Juniors used Garfield, the Sophomores used the Fam¬ ily Circus, and the Freshmen used Bloom i County. The Senior Class won first, i followed by the Junior class, then Sopho¬ mores, and Freshmen. As Tuesday started, students arrived in Togas to support the Sophomores’ dress- up day. The Senior class took ANOTHER first place. The Sophomores were a close second. The Junior class was third, and the Freshmen class was fourth. Juniors selected Beach Day as their dress-up day on Wednesday. The Seniors took FIRST AGAIN, followed by the Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen. Johnson, Eugene Baltimore, and Donald Alsberry. The Junior team was coached by Billy Dill- man. Thursday, the Seniors had Punk Rock Day as their dress-up day. They also came in first, followed by the Juniors, then Sophomores and Freshmen. The Seniors sold themselves for Slave Day, the class fundraiser. Friday students showed spirit by wear¬ ing Black and Gold. Classes were fired-up for the Pep Rally. Classes were judged on spirit and class support. The Junior class took first, with a close second by the Seniors. Friday was also the day of the parade. Floats made their debut, the band marched and the princesses waved. The princesses were Freshmen Shannon Heflin, Sophomore Sheila Toler, Juniors Tonya Cisler and Kay Richards, and Seniors Karen Church, Ginger Rinker, and Missy Phipps. The King and Queen were Kevin Huber and Missy Phipps. Our football team played a tremendous game against Clarke County. We have come a long way since that first day of high school. We were the first class to have the Junior-Senior Prom away from the school. It was held at the Ramada Inn in Manassas. The theme was “This Could be the Night” by Loverboy. It turned out to be a great success. We were also the first class to win the powder puff game two years in a row, Homecoming 85 and 86. We set a new record for the powder puff games to come. Yes, we have really done some extraordinary things in the history of our high school years. We will never forget the first time we en¬ tered this school. We were all scared of the many new things we would have to learn to do, but we have succeeded in everything we have attempted. We did our best and came out on top! We will never forget the fun times we all had work¬ ing during Homecoming Week; the hall decorations, float decorations, and pow¬ der puff practices, and then the JOY of winning for the entire week. Yes, we all had spirit that week, and we don’t want that spirit to end. Even though we will be going our separate ways soon, we plan to keep those memories of our high school years in our minds. We have all made friends and had them for a long time; don’t forget the great times with those friends. Those memories should remain in our thoughts for the rest of our lives. T Index — 48 GRADUATION The fun times have gone so very fast this year School days are over Graduation is drawing near This is a time for hope — A time for dreams But also a time for sadness, it seems This is just a beginning It’s not the end Because I know that some day we’ll all meet again Now it’s time to be leaving Not much left to tell So to the Class of ’87 I say, “Farewell” — Bonnie Martin Seniors — 49 50 — Juniors Juniors — 51 Lid jyjKsVsiou : “Go! Fight! Win!” That’s the sound of the Junior spirit. The victory of winning the “Toilet Paper Roll” Contest seemed to ignite the Juniors to dominate the Fresh¬ men, Sophomores, and the SENIORS by winning the Homecoming Pep Rally. I guess you are still wondering why we chose X-TRA SPECIAL as our theme for the Junior class. The Junior year IS X- TRA SPECIAL! Why? Well, because this is a year of X-TRA SPECIAL things in our lives, such as gaining our independence by getting a driver’s license, receiving our class ring, and the sponsoring of the Junior Senior Prom. This year holds many new dimensions. Things add flavor to the year such as the Junior Senior Powder Puff Game, the Homecoming Game, Pep Rallies, Special Activities, etc. The Junior year is not all easy and fun, though. It is the hardest year of all four aRirnav ri unm mm years of high school. It is the most difficult because most people are taking third year classes and their hardest year of required courses. But, we hang in there to reach our ultimate goal . . . our Senior Year. It brought them one step closer to their main goal, graduation, and they had fun in the process. They were very active in all aspects of school life, in¬ cluding Homecoming. Though the other classes won most of the Homecoming competition, the Class of 1990 came through with a win in the float category and finished in 3rd place overall. That didn’t slow them down though, and they continued throughout the year to stay in¬ volved, definitely leaving their mark. Team Members 1986 Season: Coach Yankey, This year the Manassas Park girls’ Junior Varsity basketball team improved greatly throughout the season. Although the 1-16 overall record does not show it, the young and inexperienced Cougars, coached by Jack Yankey and Anne Chudoba, put in a great deal of hard prac¬ tice and effort. The team was made up of freshmen Denise Tanks, Michelle Martin, Lisa Kirk, Debbie Olsen, and Cathy Byrne, and sophomores Vanessa Bello and Latoyia Walker. Hard work paid off for each of these players, and they all plan to return to play basketball next year. With a district that boasted the top finishers in last year’s state meet, including the state champion, runners David Kimber (Senior), Adam Messer (Sophomore), Carl Peace (Sophomore), and Calvin Wilbanks (Freshman) did a good job under Coach Sandy Hammersley, especially after not having a team last year. Sophomore Adam Messer made a name for himself in the state meet by plac¬ ing 2nd, with a time of 16:52. He had previously scored 2nd in the district and regional meets, being barely held off by last year’s defending state champ. The other team members did well also; and with their hard work and dedication, M.P.H.S. cross-country will soon become a force to reckon with. ■■■■ Top left: Almost finished. However, the game was exciting, and had the Juniors had 20 more seconds on the clock, they might have walked away victorious. This game has many times been compared to our close homecoming game, where, had we a few more seconds, we could have taken it. Regardless of the controversy, the girls went out and had fun, although I think the male cheerleaders enjoyed it more. Their antics on the sidelines highlighted an ex¬ citing game. The Cougars ended the regular season with a record of 8-4; but for Manassas Park football fans, the season was far from over. Although our school had one of the smallest football squads in the state this year (only 20 players), they took it all the way to the state championship game. The first post-season game was played at Cougar Stadium against the Brentsville Tigers. With 50 seconds left in the game, Manassas Park was trailing 9-6. Things didn’t look good until David Ragan recovered a Brentsville fumble and returned it 85 yards for a Cougar touchdown. The game’s final score was 12-9, Manassas Park. This game gave our team the Regional title. With the victory over Brentsville, the Cougars advanced to the State Semi-final game. This time the opponent was Matthews High School. This game was another close contest; it went into double overtime. Once again, the Cougars came out on top. Jimmy Cooper took the ball on a botched field goal attempt and threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Carl Gentry to secure a Cougar victory. The last game of the season was next — the Group A Division II state championship game. This time the Cougars faced Parry McCluer High School. Although Manassas Park played a hard-hitting game, they couldn’t pull it out against their opponent’s 35 member team. Varsity Football — 89 “perience Pays Off!! The 1986-87 boys’ basketball season was the best in Manassas Park’s history. Coach Chip Miller led his team to their third consecutive Bull Run District championship, their first ever Region B championship, and a berth in the State tournament. The team was led by seven seniors, most of whom have been together since middle school (1982-83) when they had a record of 20-0. The 1987 team had a record of 18-1 in the district, their only loss being the season opener to Rappahan¬ nock; their overall record was 22-4. Manassas Park was rated 2 in the final Group A State poll. In 1987, John Lee became the second player in the school’s history to score 1000+ career points (Eugene Baltimore was the first in 1986). The Cougars had a great ending to the 1987 season. After winning the District title, the Cougars defeated Clarke County (62-42), Rappahannock (87-69), and Central-Woodstock (55-54) to win the District Tournament and received a bye in the regional Tournament. In Regionals, the Cougars defeated William Monroe (66-58) and won the Regional crown after defeating Prince Edward (90-78). Going into the State Tournament, the Cougars were the top-rated team, but the season ended as the team lost to the 3 team in the state, Suffolk (90-76). The 1986-87 team accomplished a great feat this season, and it will be memorable in years to come. Top Lft: We did it, like we said. The Regional crown was ours! Middle Lft: J.T. Under Coach Davis, the Cougars were 1 -17 overall, defeating Bull Run District rival Brentsville. The team consisted of one eighth grader, six fresh¬ men, and four sophomores. The team im¬ proved throughout the season and gained experience for a new season. 92 — J.V.Basketball Cougars Compete! X-ecuting! This was an up and down year for the Manassas Park wrestling team under new had coach Anthony Leonard. Coach Leonard made the best of an inexperi¬ enced team with the Cougars before advancing to the state tournament. After three consecutive state titles, the fans and the Cougars themselves were expecting big things, but the Cougar squad uncharacteristically finished seventh in a field of thirty-two teams. However, there were some bright spots for the Cougars as David Phipps won his second state title, and Carl Gentry also brought home the gold. David Ragan, two-time state champion, finished third in the tournament after a controversial call by the referee. Next year, the Cougars will get “back on track” with more experi¬ enced wrestlers returning. Top: Two-time state champion David Ragan records another pin. They cheered their football team on to state finals. The squad attended a competition held by George Mason Cheerleaders and, despite not placing, did very well. However, the student body was impressed by the efforts of the cheerleaders. The squad has made many accom¬ plishments this year. One of the highlights of the year was the pillow case act during Homecoming week. The cheerleaders dressed up as midgets and danced around the gym. They’ve also learned many new mounts containing falls. The Varsity squad has made it tough for anyone to follow in their footsteps. Spring Sports — 101 £| sTj m ' 1 ,; 1 § AN X-PLOSIVE YEAR IN SPORTS This year the athletes of Manassas Park made the state take notice of this small single A school. This year the varsity football team did surprisingly well under new head coach, Joe McElfish. The team did as well as Coach McElfish expected during regular season play. The coach was confident that the team would reach post-season play. The Cougars not only reached post¬ season play, they made it a memorable season by going all the way to the state championship game. The Cougars were defeated at the state game, but they gained the second place title, a first in MPHS history. The junior varsity team experienced a learning season. Most of the team was new to the game, but they gave their all, showing Cougar fans that they could look forward to a strong varsity team in seasons to come. Cross-country made a comeback this year. Sophomore, Adam Messer, ran his way into the hearts of Cougar fans and into the worries of John Cagey of Stone¬ wall Jackson High School (Mt. Jackson). Hot on Cagey ' s heels, Adam finished second place at the state cross country meet. This year the girls’ basketball teams im¬ proved greatly. The girls played tremen¬ dously throughout the season. “Even though their record might not show it, junior varsity had a good year. The varsity had an outstanding season. All the girls did a great job,” stated Coach Yankee. Traditionally, the Manassas Park wres¬ tling team is simply a state-contending powerhouse. This year, the Cougars took the hard road to the state tournament. Under new Head Coach Anthony Leonard, the Cougars felt the pressure of repeating as state champions (for the fourth consecutive year). Although the Cougars were fighting the inexperienced factors all year with five first-year wres¬ tlers, Coach Leonard managed to ad¬ vance eight wrestlers to the state tourna¬ ment, where they finished seventh out of thirty-two schools competing. The Cougars brought home two state champions in David Phipps and Carl Gentry and are already looking forward to next year’s season. Another team to experience a learning season was the junior varsity boys’ basketball team coached by Mr. Davis. They won only one game during the sea¬ son, but they had given their all. This year’s varsity boys’ basketball team had its best year ever. The team was led by seven seniors. The over-all record was 23-4. The team traveled to the District play-offs and took home the trophy; then they advanced to the Regional playoffs, placing first and qualifying for the state game at JMU. The Cougars were the top- rated team, but the season ended as the team lost to Suffolk. In volleyball, the lady Cougars had a very challenging year. They worked hard and played well to win several games against some of the top district teams. The varsity team consisted of eleven girls and two managers. Captain Denise Poarch was a strong leader and kept the team together. Bonnie Calomeris, the other senior player, contributed to the team with her spiking and serving talents. She was a first-year player who learned newtechniques quickly. Sherri Brown had a great season setting the ball to our outstanding spikers. One of the best spikers was Sandy Alsberry; she was one of the strongest and best players on the team. Her dedication and enthusiasm left a positive effect on her teammates. Even though the Lady Cougars weren’t successful in winning any matches this year, they proved to many people that Manassas Park does have a volleyball team. Each year will be better because of our continued effort and dedication to im¬ prove our volleyball skills. As this book draws to a close the spring sports teams prepare to enter their competitions. The spring sports consist of track and field, baseball, and softball. The coaches of these teams were Coach McElfish (Track Field), Coach Leonard (Baseball), and Coach Hammersley (Softball). Throughout the year the cheerleaders were there to support all the teams during their seasons. Here we go — an easy class where we could sit around and goof off. . . These ideas and many others filled our minds when we chose to take Journalism this school year. Little did we know what was in store for us. We had fun, but there were those hours of frustration, disagreements, Saturday workdays, headaches, and the ultimate . . . the DREADED DEADLINE!!!!! We learned many things: how to work in a pinch, how to cooperate with differing personalities, how to compromise and accept others’ suggestions over ours; and most of all, we learned how to pull together and work as a team. Putting together a book that summarizes an entire year is a job that requires much determination and dedication on the part of the staff. As editor, I had the privilege of working with a staff who gave willingly of their time and talents. For this, they have my heartfelt thanks. I couldn’t have asked for a staff that worked harder for the completion of this book. There are a few staff members who deserve special thanks. First of all, my co-editor, Kyung Sung. Kyung was forced to take over all of my work as editor of the yearbook during the first deadline. I missed several weeks of school due to illness and Kyung did a beautiful job of handling my work and hers. Secondly, I would like to thank Rusty Fewell. Rusty has been on yearbook staff longer than any other staff member this year. He was always there to share his experience with me and to help me when there were things I didn’t understand. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank all of the staff members who came to work on Saturdays. Many people put in long hours of their own time on weekends. This book would not have been possible without their extra effort. I hope that each of you will enjoy and appreciate Reflections ’87. We have done our best to give you a book that will hold many memories of this school year at MPHS for a lifetime. Amanda Dellinger Editor-in-Chief It’s finally over.. . long and stressful work. To the many Seniors and Juniors of the yearbook staff, the yearbook was a constant headache that refused to go away. Mornings and nights were consumed with the thoughts of captions and layouts. Friends were made and broken over advice and disputes for pictures and spaces. But to many, it was a pure joy. The yearbooks are here! Pandemonium breaks out as we rush to grab one. Comments fly back and forth over our finished product. All the worries and heartaches were worth it, The finished yearbook reflects our dedication. — Kyung Sung Co-Editor 144 — Closing
