Top: With a longer school day this year, bus routes were adjusted so that many students arrived at school later than they had in the past. Above: Senior Chris Martin conducts an interview with new principal Mr. Leak for the first issue of the Cougar Journal. Right: Mr. Voile is the new guidance counselor at MPHS this year. 2 Opening This year when the students of Manas¬ sas Park High School returned we had no principal. The second week of school our new principal Mr. Leak arrived. Besides a new principal, Manassas Park also got some new teachers this year: Mrs. Brewer for Data Processing, Mr. Stevas for Auto Mechanics, Ms. Drumheller for Distributive Education, Mrs. Reinfried for Cosmetology and Ms. Zimmerman for Earth Science. Students also found that the grading scale had switched back to 70-77 as a D and 94-100 as an A. Last year ' s scale was 65-70 was a D and 92-100 was an A. In the sports field this year football prac¬ tice had already started a few weeks be¬ fore school reopened. The girls basket¬ ball team had a new coach, Mr. Reklis. Cheerleaders found themselves tempo¬ rarily without a sponsor. Another group that was active right from the start was Ms. Davin ' s Journalism class. Work began immediately on the first issue of the Cougar Journal and the 1985 edition of the MPHS yearbook, Re¬ flections. Another change this year was the ruling that clubs would meet after school only. There would no longer be a club, day with an activity schedule. Top: The first week of school finds Ms. Drumheller and senior Kelly Johnson swamped with business in the school store. Bottom: Ms. Taylor and Ms. Davis rent lockers to students during first period. Leak Principal This year Manassas Park High School has a new principal. He is Mr. Lawrence Leak. Mr. Leak is from Maryland. This is his first experience as principal. He was an assistant principal at Leonardtown High School for four years. He was a social studies teacher and cross country coach at Great Mills High School. Mr. Leak really wants people to learn - not only the students but the teachers as well. The reason he came to Manassas Park is because it is going to be a new adventure for him. Mr. Robert L. Horn Assistant Principal Mr. Robert Horn has been the assistant principal at Manassas Park for two years. Before coming to our school he graduated from the University of Virginia. Prior to that he taught and coached at Southwestern Virginia. As assistant principal he does a lot of things. He sees himself as a cross between a father, counselor, teacher and truant officer. He likes his job very much because he gets a chance to work with young people, and he finds that very fulfilling. What he likes most about Manassas Park is the people. Bottom Left: Standing behind a volleyball game, Mrs. Hammersley checks some of the students ' techniques. This year the teachers were given a ques¬ tionnaire asking if they could be any animal, what would it be and why. Their responses were very unique. Although the majority of the teachers picked cats, there were a lot of other answers. Most of them chose cats because to them cats are loveable, cuddly, deadly, and they can be independent when they want to. Other choices were a mink, another a lion, an eagle, a roach, a rabbit and a whale. Ms. Drumheller chose a mink because they are used to make beautiful fur coats. Mr. Freeman picked the otter because all they do is have fun. A lion sounded good to an unknown teacher because they are powerful and free and very independent. Another mystery teacher would like to be an eagle because they are above all. Mrs. Pinckard wants to be a roach so she can live in the Home Economics Depart¬ ment, with all the food and the nice teachers. Mrs. Albright said she wanted to be a rabbit because they are cute, cuddly, sweet, nice, warm and soft, just like her¬ self. Mr. Leak was thinking big when he de¬ cided he would like to be a whale, so he could roam the seas in freedom with no enemies, save man. Like Eddie Groves; when he was a kid he used to suck the dirt off of rocks. And if you think that ' s weird, Kelly Johnson used to eat cigarettes. Chris Martin would wrap herself up in her nanny ' s curtains. She would also eat potato bugs. We ' ve certainly come a long way from our childhood. (?!?) She enjoyed the chance to get to know and work with the students outside the classroom atmosphere. She said that when you have good class officers with lots of ideas, the sponsor ' s job is always easier. Miss Taylor believes that being a class sponsor means advising the class, helping them carry out their plans, seeing that they get necessary information about activities such as ring deliveries and orders, etc., and supervising them when an adult chaperone is required. She said that sometimes it ' s hard to get more than a few people interested in an activity, such as fundraisers. Miss Taylor plans on being a class sponsor until she doesn ' t enjoy it anymore. If she is asked to be a senior sponsor next year, she said she will be happy to help the students get plans approved and carry out any reasonable activities they plan. 46 Juniors Susan Smith ' A . When these teenagers went places to make money, some kids from the South Bronx caught onto them, and they started with their slick moves. All around the world people these days are getting all wrapped up in breakin ' . Many famous dancers and producers of movies say that break¬ dancing should be inspiring to all people, especially the young. Danger is involved with this dancing craze. But almost anything you do these days has danger or can hurt you if you use or apply it incorrectly. Usually you can spot a breaker in an instant. He she will be wearing mixed-matched clothing, warm-up suits, sweats, head bands, sparkling jewelry, gym shoes, and color extras such as scarves, gloves and wristbands. Today you can take classes to learn how to breakdance. In some classes the ages range from 15 to 40. Everyone is getting into the act. Movies have come out like Breakin and Beat Street to entertain us with their special gift of dancing. Still to come are yet more great breakdancing movies. New York, Washington, D.C., and many other places around the U.S. you can go and see just how breakin ' is done. Breakdancing is a new phenomenon of the 80 ' s. Will it last, or will it die out as disco did? In September, Pepsico sponsored an assembly featuring a breakdancing contest. Donald Alsberry won the grand prize, a Michael Jackson tour jacket. Runners-up Missy Terrell and Jay Burke each won a six-pak of Pepsi. Student Life 115 This year at Manassas Park High School fashion has struck high in student life! Everything from flourescent, wild jewelry, new heights to make-up, fashionable hair-dos, clothes — almost anything goes! But we still have the good ol ' people with t-shirts, jeans, boots, and just a little smile to make them look great. School spirit is still in all of us, with being rowdyed up at pep rallies, to just being proud to walk in our school. This year we have a new principal, Mr. Leak. He has made some changes this year. Take for instance parking stickers, instead of hassling with finding your parking number every¬ day. Clubs after school so we can use all our school hours for education. People have to get smoking permits to have the privilege to smoke. The changes he has made may not be to everyone ' s liking, but they ' re to our benefit. New students have come to our school; hopefully they will enjoy it. If the Cougar spirit rubs off on them, maybe they ' ll get as excited to be a Cougar as we are. Student life this year and every year keeps getting bigger and better. Let ' s hope it keeps going that way. Because the only people who can change it, or keep adding to it, are we the students. 116 Student Life 2wo n Above: DAR Good Citizenship Award went to Beth Mullins.
