This year MPHS noted many changes; foremost was the addition of bleachers, scoreboard, lights, flag pole and a snack bar to our football field. The Cougar varsity football team played its first home game at Manassas Park on September 19, 1980. The Cougars defeated the Virginia School of the Deaf and Blind by a score of 39-0. Also a cafeteria, renovated restrooms, and newly painted hallways added a new look. The access road to the school was repaired, markings and signs were added to the parking lot and to the bus lanes in front of the school. With the additional facilities, a new administrative staff promoted school spirit, sports and participation in the student body. The administration supported the creation of additional clubs and commercially printed the handbook for the first time. Football players show-off in the hall. Students gather for the first pep rally of the year. 4 Mr. Edmonds issues locks to waiting students. Diana Husch and Mary Delp are busy serving lunch. Opening 5 Time Out For Festivities Kermit crowns Miss Piggy on the Sophomore float. Muppet spirit is shown on the Junior float. The Senior float places first. 6 Opening %% School Board Promotes Education SUPERINTENDENT- Robert Lewis DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION- Diana Richardson ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT- David Marsh MPHS has an entirely new administrative staff this year. Nine teachers had no specific plans beyond graduating from college. Four wanted to join the armed forces, one to avoid being drafted, and twq teachers were completely undecided. Mr. Bowersox’s plans were the most unusual. He wanted to become a black baseball player. Miss Hamilton barely missed her career goals. She wanted to become a nuclear physicist or a brain surgeon, to win the Boston Marathon, and to dance with Rudolf Nureyev. Mr. Money wanted to goof off, but instead chose a life of drudgery as an Industrial Arts teacher. Not Pictured Alan Freeman Band College: Pikeville, B.S. Western Carolina University, M.A. Joseph McElfish Physical Education College: Frostburg State, B.S., M.Ed. Mr. Delaney wanted to become an actor after graduating from high school, but instead he ended up acting like a teacher. Mr. Curtis, being a man of great integrity, didn’t want to settle for one career objective in his life. He intended to be a world conqueror, an astronaut, a poet, a philosopher, and a windmill fixer. Instead he dedicated his life to teaching high school mathematics. Dr. Rambo intended to become a dentist, but college chemistry and math grades soon altered his plans, he said. When Ms. Jackie Herr Cosmetology I, II, III College: NVCC, V.P.I., Burno’s Rhonda Fike Stutzman Concert Choir, General Music 8, Elementary College: Bridgewater College, B.A. Bobrosky was a senior, she idolized Pauline Frederick and intended to follow in her footsteps, by becoming a foreign correspondent. Ms. Frost planned to work in the peace corps, but wound up searching for peace as a Home Economics teacher. Mrs. Shockley wanted to travel and become an interior decorator, but instead she travels to MPHS everyday designing a science course. Ms. Wire wanted to write for a fashion magazine, but ended up teaching others to write. Faculty 17 We Eat To A Different Beat Cafeteria workers: Ted Martin, Diane Husch, Carol Lutz, Mary Delp. Custodians: Pauline Redd, Janice Mauck. On slave day the lunchroom was the scene of a mock battle. Four “slaves”, Philip Brown, Warren Wood, Glen Gar¬ ner, and Alan Twombly, engaged in combat when their masters yelled, “Air raid.” Shooting rifles and throwing gre¬ nades, the slaves slayed each other in the simulation. They battled again with the climax coming when Philip Brown and Alan Twombly charged each other with fixed bayonets impaling them¬ selves on their opponent’s blade. Their masters, though, were unsatisfied with their performance. They then required their slaves to form a train and to go choo-chooing down the halls. 18 Faculty Working Towards Perfection . This time his name was Dave Dutton, a graduate from James Madison University. Under Dutton’s leadership the Cougars spurted out to an impressive 7-1 start, the best start ever for a Cougar team with the only loss coming at the hands of Colonial Beach. Among the wins was an exciting victory over Riverdale Baptist, a game which saw the Cougars apply a full court press for a come from behind 1 point victory. Another highlight of the season was a game against Queen Anne which was played at the Captial Centre as a preliminary game before the Bullets. All 5 seniors started that game and the Cougars came out with a last second bucket for a 1 point victory. But the most impressive victory of the early season was a 20 point win over a much taller Brentsville District team. The Cougars went on to defeat Queen Anne, Ascension, Quantico, and the Heights. Roy Snyder and Jimmy Moore are co-captains. Keith Tibbs and Charles Prusaitis go up for the rebound. But the second half of the season was not as good as the first. The Cougars were now ready to take on Brentsville at Brentsville. This time the Tigers proved to be much tougher as they handed the Cougars a 1 point defeat in overtime. The Cougars also had 3 consecutive losses to George Mason, Riverdale Baptist, and Colonial Beach. But they bounced back to win 3 out of their last 4 for a respectable 10-6 record. Keith Huber scores two on jumper. 108 Sports Finish Season With 12-8 Mark Ronnie Moore shows good form on jump shot. Tournament Time In the Tri-State Tournament the cougars were ceded fourth. In the opening round they defeated the Heights. In the semi- finals they lost to Colonial Beach but bounced back to defeat Brentsville in the consolation round for a third place finish. Keith Huber and Ronnie Moore received 2nd team all tournament honors. Keith Huber also received 2nd team all conference while Ronnie Moore and Keith Tibbs received honorable mention all tournament. In the Bull Run Tournament the Cougars were defeated in the opening round by Brentsville District as they finished their season at a 12-8 mark. Keith Huber made 1st team all conference honors as Ronnie Moore and Keith Tibbs received 2nd team honors. Roy Snyder goes up strong in a crowd for two. Reverse layup by Jimmy Moore, up and good. This year has been a new experience not only for many of the team members but also for the new coach, Mr. McElfish. The J.V. Prior to the beginning of the school year, the J.V. cheerleaders attended a cheerleading clinic in Springfield, Va. Which was sponsored by the Varsity Cheerleaders. The flags and majorettes were formed several years ago because of a keen interest on the girls’ part. Enthusiastic and anxious to rehearse, they enlisted the help of Mrs. Pearson to be their sponsor. The girls chose their own outfits- black shorts vests with gold sweaters for the flag corp and gold leotards with skirts and black vests for the majorettes. With new uniforms, the season began in September when the girls performed at all the home games. Then came the Christmas Parade and finally home basketball games. Mrs. Pearson and the girls chose a variety of songs such as: Rock n’ Roll Fantasy, Pm Coming Out, A Fifth of Beethoven and California Strut. 114 Sports The girls had a great season and are anticipating next year to be the best ever.
