His life span is about eighteen years, but some have been known to live longer in captivity. He breeds once every two or three years and is the proud papa of one to six kit¬ tens. Students learn geography by painting this map on the wall. It became a city in 1975. The current mayor is J. Frank Murphy. The city has three elementary schools and one high school. It is the youngest school system in Virginia, opening in 1976. Manassas Park occupies approxmately two square miles of Virginia ' s beautiful landscape. On Independance Day residents have a para¬ de,fireworks,games and contests at Costello Park. All summer long, the park boasts Baseball and Softball fields, a swimming pool and tennis court. Ma¬ nassas Park also has its own City Hall, Shopping Center, and a fast - food restaurant. This committee discussed teachers ' concerns and problems and then re¬ ported to Mr. Moyers. Mr. Curtis headed the commit¬ tee with Mrs. Banks, Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Giorgio, Ms. Hamilton, Mr. Lewis, Mr. Lowry, Mrs. Shockley, and Ms. Yurchick. The Guidance Comm., made up of Mr. De¬ laney, Mrs. Wire, Mrs. Sodhi, Ms. Simpson, Mrs. Niles and Ms. Sharman studied the school curriculum and made suggestions to help make the Guidance Dept, more effec¬ tive. Vaughn fights for yardage. L. Mullins streaks down the field. The Cougar varsity football team finished with an even 5-5 record. The team opened with a 7-6 victory over Northumber¬ land. After a 53-0 shutout of Bethlehem Baptist, the Cougars suffered their first loss-32-6 de¬ feat to King and Queen. Next they experienced a three game losing streak. The players hung tough and bounced back with a 9-8 win over Colo¬ nial Beach. They beat Quantico 21-12 on Homecoming night. With a 69-14 thrashing over Congressional, the team fin¬ ished the year with tough losses on the road. First, to Maret 7-6, and to Rappahannock 14-12. The Junior Class ' s hall takes a close second place. Homecoming Week began with the selling of spirit links on October 15. These links sold for 5 cents each. The seniors won, followed by the juniors and sophomores. Tuesday was black and gold day, and this time freshmen came out on top. Seniors came in second, with sophomores placing third. Slave day took place the same day with seniors doing crazy stunts thought up by cruel mas¬ ters. Wednesday was hall deco¬ ration day where students turned the halls into Storybook Land. Seniors scored first in this event with juniors coming in second and sophomores third. Debby Cox and Susan Anderson dress up for 50 ' s and 60 ' s day. Basketball squad featured a more experienced group of players than last year. Led by the leading scorer, Keith Tibbs, and the ball handling of John Parks and Larry Edwards, the team slowly came along. This year the team participated in a Christ¬ mas tournament in Marshall. Boys ' Basketball 81 BOYS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL. . . The Boys ' Varsity Basketball team worked long and hard this season. The team was very young, including six sophomores on the squad. As the year progressed, they molded together and worked as a team. Led by the leading scorer, Randy Pugh, and the passing ability of Al¬ lison Monroe and Keith Huber, the team once again had a very successful season. D. The team was very young and inexperienced, but under the super¬ vision of Coach Hilleary, the team responded with a come from behind win over Stonewall Jackson. Then, in the Christmas Tournament, the Cou¬ gars finished behind a strong Stras- burg team. The team then bounced back with a decisive victory over King George, 47 - 14. All of the members were chosen from their homerooms, except for the officers who were elected by the entire student body. Each member had to be respon¬ sible for carrying out the wan ts of the students in their homeroom and had to have enough time to help with activities. The SCA sold Resse ' s Cups, school pens, and sponsored a SCA vs. Faculty Volleyball game and a Bowl - a - thon to raise money. They, also, had Christmas week activities and a Christmas dance. The sponsors of the club were Miss Mullin, Mr. Stiff, and Mrs. Cook. SCA 95 CHORUSES PERFORM AT FESTIVAL Concert Choir sings under the direction of Ms. Stutzman. fir. The Chorus Department consisted of Mixed Chorus, Concert Choir, Double Quartet, and Girls ' Ensemble. These choruses performed at school concerts and Fall, Spring, and Christmas concerts, as well as an Exchange concert with other schools. Select students performed in Regional chorus. Hall The Band Department consisted of five bands, all of which performed in school concerts. The Beginning Intermediate Band was for new mu¬ sicians trying to better their talent and the Ad¬ vanced Band worked long hours to perfect their musical abilities. The Jazz Band performed in a Stage Band Festival as well as school con¬ certs. This band was for anyone who could play a musical instrument; participation in any other band was not necessary. Some of the members of the Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Bands made up the Marching Band. This band participated in the Christmas Parade and a Marching Band Festival in the Spring. The Ma¬ jorettes marched along with this band in pa¬ rades and at football games. The majorettes also performed at pep rallies. Miss Simpson was the sponsor of all five bands and Miss Mullin spon¬ sored the majorettes. Bands 99 The Foreign Language Club was open to all students tak¬ ing French or Spanish. The club took a field trip to Washington to see the Jose Greco Dance Company, which performed at the DAR Constitution Hall. Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) involves students in the marketing and distribution process of products. Students study selling, advertising, and product service technology. D.E. students earn two credits; one credit is received for classroom participation and a second credit is earned by having a job approved by the teacher. DECA held an Em¬ ployer - Employee Banquet in the spring for all members and their employers.
