Commencement is a beginning of a new start. It is my hope that you will ap- proach graduation with new aspirations and new goals, looking to the future with plans of higher achievement. This year seems to be a special year since we have so many outstanding students. The accomplishments of so many of our students has brought distinction to the Class of 1987. The degree of success with which you are able to make for yourself a happy and satisfying life will be dependent upon what you have gotten from your school experiences. We, as teachers, get a great deal of satisfaction from our graduates who go out into the world and become successful and productive citizens. I have never known a teacher who was not proud of the suc- cess of his student. Best of luck in the future you are about to make for yourself. Sincerely, Bob T. Kerley, principal Editor’s Comment The creation of the 1987 Man High School ECHO” was no small task, but one of much diligence and many hours of hard work. Compiling the memories for our yearbook brought many fond memories back to mind, along with the knowledge that not only are we, the 1987 ECHO” staff, creating something new, but are saying good-bye to our days at Man High School. As a picture captures a moment, we, the staff, have at- tempted to capture a year of fleeting experiences and lasting friendships to hold fresh in our minds forever. It is my hope that as the pages of this book are turned, you will experience the same pleasure that 1 did in hlping to make the 1987 Man High School ECHO. Enjoy! Rebecca Roach, Editor Expressing her pleasure at a year filled with new friends and new experiences, Trine-Lise Jensen, exchange student from Moss, Norway, will say good-bye to her teachers and friends at Man High School this spring. Trine came to MHS in the fall of 1986 as an exchange student. She was warmly welcomed into the home of Amy Sue Perry and her Family. This was a familiar set- ting for Trine since, in Norway, she lived with her mother and two sisters. Once established with the Perrys, Trine was enrolled in seven classes which includ- ed English 12. In addition to classes, Trine had what she describes as a “great year” filled with new experiences; new friends, football games, American food (especially pizza), and American movies. Membership in the 4-H club also afforded her pleasure. Memories of the prom, graduation, new friends and good times, will go to Norway with Trine this spring. An exchange of experiences and friendship for the warmth of a lovely personality — Trine-Lise Jensen. 10 COLLEGE DAY The 1986-1987 College Day at Man High School was a gnat success. Colleges, technscal schools, and educators from WV and surrounding slates shand important mfor- mutton with tht Juniors and Stniors about career opportunities after high school. BLOODMOBILE Man High is customarily visited several times each year by the American Red Cross Bloodmobile. This year, as in the past, MHS students and faculty, and the local community supported this impor- tant project chaired by Bruce Belcher. bove: Becky Williams, Charlotte Napier, and Cindy Cook wen among numerous studens volunteers who assisted during Bloodmobile Day. Governor’s Honors Academy This summer, I attended The Governor's Honors Academy at West Virginia Wesleyan College along with 150 of the finest students in West Virginia. The objective of the academy was to prepare high school students for college life. 1 lived in a dorm, ate every meal in a cafeteria, and attended 2 classes every day. My major concentration was centered around speech and debate, with a minor in mathematics. The Governor’s Honors Academy was the most wonderful ex- perience of my life; but, saying good-bye to my new friends was a very difficult experience. None the less, my memories of the academy will last a lifetime. West Virginia Scholars Academy Rebecca Roach was named to the West Virginia Scholars Academy as a 1986 West Virginia Honor Roll Member. The WV Honor Roll is the most selective and prestigious academic honor bestowed in WV, according to Tom McNeel, WV Superintendent of Schools. The purpose of the Academy is to bridge the gap between high school and college. Thus, the pro- gram helps to make more prepared college students. The Academy encircles over forty of the most competitive and well-known colleges nationwide in a group of cooperating schools that are readily available to WV Honor Roll members. The Academy is very selective. Less than 90 out of the state’s 30,000juniors make its Honor Roll. West Virginia Teachers Academy The first West Virginia Teacher's Academy was held at West Virginia University during the summer of 1986. The pur- pose of the academy was to bring to the classroom teacher the latest research in effective teaching techniques. Academy ac- tivities included group discussions with noted authorities and micro-teaching. Thirty-five teachers from across the state par- ticipated in this educational conference. The academy will be an annual event designed for the professional growth and development of the classroom teacher. Among the first par- ticipants were: Linda Cline and Jane McKee from Man High School. 13 A NEW ASPECT AT MHS This year at Man High School we are pleased to announce the newest addition to our school, the student lounge. Due to the combined efforts of Mrs. Iras Farley, Bob T. Kerley, and the newspaper staff, our dream of having an area specifically for students has become a reality. Equipped with numerous video games, a jukebox, and a seating area, the student lounge has become a great success with its profits going toward the purchasing of let- ters for the outside of Man High School. We wish to thank all who have helped in the creation of our wonderful new stu- dent lounge. Alan Harris and Nicole Sharp enjoy the games in the lounge. As the season began, one of the team's greatest achievements was defeating the highly ranked AAA school, Hun- tington East, in the Logan Tournament. The team showed exceptional pro- mise as the young season began, although all our expectations were not realized. In the latter por- tion of the season the team captured a solid defeat of the Beckley Flying Eagles which prompted high hopes as we entered the state playoffs. bottom Lift and Right: If John truly enjoys basketball, why does he always appear to be in sheer agony? Due to the combined efforts of Mrs. Wanda Christian, Mrs. Mary Ruth Hale, Mrs. Linda Cline, Mr. Denny Miller, and others, the hilarious custom of girlgets boy is now alive and well at Man High. The contest began with the traditional race of the senior girls chasing, catching, nearly killing, and marrying the men of their dreams (or sometimes nightmares). We, the Class of 1987, wish to thank all who helped in the recreation of Sadie Hawkins’ Day, for it was a great en- joyment to us all! The winners of the Sadie Hawkins’ contest were: James Albright — LiT Abner, Kelli Christian — Daisy Mae; Becky Williams — Mammy Yokum; Mark Hughes — Pap- py Yokum. left Corner: Yei.
