Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1983 volume:

Dedication We, the 1983 Man High Echo Staff, wish to dedicate our annual yearbook to Mrs. Betty Chappell. Mrs. Chappell graduated from Man High School and furthered her education at Marshall University where she was a member of the Tri-Sig Sorority. She then returned to her alma mater to teach Biology for the past 32 years. In deep appreciation of her understanding, guidance, and patience, we dedicate our yearbook to her! Principal's Message It is indeed a pleasure to have the opportunity to extend my best wishes to the graduating class of 1983. My purpose in writing this message is to congratulate and commend all of you for the accomplishments that you have made. I wish for you the very best in the future and hope that you will always feel a loyalty to Man High School. It is your responsibility as future citizens to help to make this world a better place in which to live, however, without a good education you cannot hope to do so. Your future depends upon how you use the knowledge that you have gained. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction for our graduates to go out into society and become successful citizens. I hope that you will always have an interest in your Alma Mater and its welfare. As principal, I shall be happy to aid you in any way I can. Sincerely, Bob T. Kerley, Principal 2 Philosophy Success and Failure. These two words are constantly with us in our lifetimes. One is desirable and the other shunned. Yet, they are only two sides of the same coin. Success means achievement while failure means that one has not achieved all that was attempted. The key word here is attempted. One should never be ashamed of failure. Disheartened, yes. Disappointed, yes. But never ashamed; for can there ever be success without trying? Never be afraid of failing if you give it your all. The real shame is the lack of struggle in one’s character to even try. Putting forth the maximum effort is the only real important thing. One can fail without trying, but one can never succeed without trying. Denny Miller 3 Student Council ■ .6) c pro o o ’’ a 5 Editors' Comments It has been my pleasure as 1983 co-editor of the yearbook to help put together this collection of thoughts and memories of our senior year. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work on this book. To capture those special and fleeting moments of our high school year was our goal. I hope that in the future you can look at your wonderful times spent at Man High School. We, the staff, hope that this book serves its purpose in restoring the vividness of this year in your mind. Christine Wintz As co-editor of the 1983 yearbook, I have enjoyed watching and helping in the development of this unique book. Through our efforts, we hope to capture the fleeting moments of shared memories during our senior year. Working on the yearbook has been both a challenging and rewarding experience. As the year passes and our memories of high school begin to fade, we will be able to look through this visual history and renew our fond experiences. This is the staffs and my desire to all of you. 6 Cathy Trogdon When I was in first grade, I wondered how it would be when I reached high school. I couldn’t wait to see. Throughout my years in school 1 could not wait to go. I wanted to be in high school more than anyone could know. Then as a Freshman, I was well on my way to my first day in high school, my most memorable day. Everything I had dreamed, it was all to unreal, I was a high school student. It was the ultimate thrill. You work hard to develop the talent that you possess, in school you will be taught to use that talent with great success. Then you become a senior, it’s time to be on your way, to put to use what you have learned during your high school stay. This was a year where the Billies were supposed to win only three or four games - A rebuilding season.” But we did not rebuild; we reloaded. Even though controversy and bad luck played a great role in most of the Billies’ games, the team remained competitive enough to win seven of its ten scheduled games. September 3, Man at Logan. We defeated the ’Cats 15-0 in a sloppily played game. September 10, Man at Poca. We played a much better game, and we soundly beat the 'Dots 35-16. September 17, C-K at Man. In a defensive battle, we did something a Man team has failed to do in the three previous tries. We beat the Wonders 2-0! September 24, Man at Buffalo Wayne. Although we played poorly, we beat the outclassed Bisons 28-6. October 1, Homecoming. Mt. View at Man. In a game where we were rated 1 in the state, our over-confidence proved to be our down fall. We lost to a talented Mt. View team 9-36. October 8, Pocahontas County at Man. This was a game we needed to bring back some of our lost confidence. We scalped the lowly Warriors 34-0. October 15, Man at Princeton. This game, which the officials let get totally out of hand, was highly controversial and ended in a brawl between the two teams. We lost the battle 8-21, but we won the war. October 22, Parents Night. Greenbrier East at Man. In a must win game, we over-powered a good team 34-6, and upped our record to 6-2. October 29, Man at Oceana. We didn’t play well, but we managed to shut out the “scared Indians 17-0. November 6, Man at Russell, Kentucky. Although we played our best game of the year, we still came up short on a controversial call on a point-after-touchdown attempt which was called good by two officials, but over-ruled by one. Our hopes were still very good to make the playoffs, but luck seemed to, somehow, avoid us once again. Although this year’s squad, which lost no games to AA schools, came just short of the playoffs, finishing 9th, the fans of Man will always consider this year’s team to be 1.
