Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1982 volume:

Editors’ Reggie Osenlon As co-editor of the 1982 Man High School Yearbook. am grateful for the opportunity to work on this book. Sooner than we expect, our high school years will have flown by: and we will be leaving the friends with whom we have shared so many good and unfortunately bad times. The 1982 Yearbook Staff is proud to present this book that captures those special fleeting moments of our high school years to the student body of Man High School. We hope our efforts will keep fresh those moments that seem to fade so quickly as the years go by. Finally. I wish everyone the very best that life has to offer and hope that each will reach every goal that he attempts to accomplish. Comments It is my responsibility, as co-editor of the yearbook, to aid in producing a visual record of activities at Man High School for the 1981-82 school year. Developing this record of our senior year has been a challenging experience. It is my hope that in twenty or thirty years, when our memories of Man High are growing faint, we will be able to turn the pages of this pictorial history and remember how good the old days'' really were. I hope that seeing a picture of a long forgotten friend will give a renewed vividness to the memories of our high school years. This record of the past will always be a part of our present and future. B Milan Klipa Yearbook Staff Lying: Debbie Bailey. Phyllis Hurley. Paula Burgess. Cris Ellis. Vicki Trogdon. Lou Letsinger. Mrs. Gretchen Donahue and Mrs. Linda Cline, both whom we admire dearly. Mrs. Gretchen Donahue after graduating from Man High in 1962. began teaching in 1967 after receiving an A.B. in Education Fields and Mathematics and Physical Education from Marshall University. While attending Marshall she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega, and her senior year she was chosen as a Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities and a Senior Senator. She resides in South Man with her husband Mike, and her sons Jason and Brian. She is a member of the Bruce McDonald Memorial United Methodist Church where she is a Sunday School teacher. Presently she is the sponser of the Keywannettes and the newly formed Gamma Delta Pi. We. the senior class, would like to thank her for all the help and support she has given us during the past three years. Mrs. Linda Cline, after graduating from Man High School in 1956. she began teaching in 1970 after receiving a B.S. in Business Education. While at Concord she was a member of the sorority Delta Zeta. She resides at Combs Addition with her husband Gary, a math teacher at Man Junior High, her son Christopher and her daughter Erina. She is a member of St. Edmund Catholic Church in South Man where she is the organist. Presently she is a senior class sponser. We. the senior class, like to thank her for all the work she has done with us during the past three years. 3 Philosophy Giving advice is at best risky. A person risks appearing more knowledgeable, more learned, and more wise than he really is. He may even risk appearing pompous. A cliche says. The best advice is no advice.” Keeping in mind these risks, a person must remember that his advice can come only out of his accumulated experience and from his present perspective. To each senior I will say that I have learned that one should attempt to maintain the idealism of his youth, but to temper it with reality: one should keep his aspirations high, but within the realm of possibility: and one should always strive for excellence, even in the smallest tasks; if one fails (and everyone does at times) he should never cease to try. It is important to seek truth and beauty everywhere, to love generally and specifically, to hope and never give in to despair, to have a sense of humor so as not to take oneself too seriously, and to cultivate a love of learning and a desire to know that will continue throughout one's life when many other assets have deserted one. Equally important is to act as wisely as possible on this knowledge. Finally, always remember that though one is only a small part of humanity, each person is a unique and sacred part, as is every other individual. Cultivate and preserve this individuality. Fannie Waller Our Memories Will Never Be Forgotten We have now reach our final year. And looking back, the memories bring a tear. For all our days at Ole Man Fligh Flave gone so fast that they seem to have flown by. As we walk down the crowded halls together. We hope to keep these special friends forever. All our memories will be collected up and stored in our minds. And our thoughts of the future will eventually unwind. We started our 1981-82 school year in September. The year was to prepare us for our Graduation Day. a day we will keep and always remember. Our last three years have brought us many joys. Maturing, most of us. from childish girls and boys. But as we leave we must keep in mind this one thought. forgetting never. To set forth our goals, reach them. and cherish the memories of our high school days forever. Seniors graduating, underclassmen looking forward to another year. Looking back it is my hope that this year has been one of growth, academically, socially, and in culture enrichment. The graduating class of 1982 is indeed an exceptional class. These students have so much talent. Your success depends upon how you use those talents and knowledge that you have gained in the year you have studied in school. When our graduates make for themselves successful citizens in society, it gives our faculty a great deal of satisfaction. We wish for you the very best in the future and hope that you will always feel loyalty to your Alma Mater and that you will always continue to have an interest in Man High School. Sincerely, Bob T. The Billies' winning tradition was again upheld by another group of talented, dedicated, and hard working young men and their coaches in the 1981 football season. Pride, honor, and winning have become cornerstones of the Billies' athletic program. The old adage that success begets success seems to be true again. Since the football team has been in post - season playoffs for five consecutive years, each new group of young men has seemed duty-bound to accept, defend, and keep this tradition alive to pass on to its successors. The 1981 Billies began the season with experienced lettermen leading the way. In the first game against arch rival. Logan. the contest was interesting, exciting, and very close: however, the Billies won. thus beginning the season on a winning note. As the season progressed, the Blue Funk IV Defense, with a tradition of its own. registered shut-out after shut-out. By season end. Blue Funk IV had shut out eight opponents: the defense had allowed its opponents only twenty-one points all totaled. With an excellent offense complementing the outstanding defense, the Billies finished the season with a 9-1 record. Based on the team's season record and rating points, the Billies’ team was ranked number fifth, giving it a playoff berth against fourth ranked Milton. In round one of the playoffs. Man defeated Milton 26-0. thus moving on to play first ranked New Martinsville of Magnolia. In the semi-final game played at Magnolia, the Billies did not fare so well. New Martinsville advanced to the championship game by way of a 22-19 win over the Billies. Coach Carter and his staff had confidence in the team from the beginning of the season. This confidence grew with the season. Coach Carter said. We knew we could play. We entered the playoffs playing the best ball we had played all season. Not being one to make excuses for himself or his team. Coach Carter accepted the decision with dignity. Believing in his team’s ability and determination. Coach Carter felt that the Billies could have won very easily. After some reflection. Coach Carter did conceed that there were several uncontrollable factors that were turning points in the semi-final game. First was the weather. The field was wet. slick, and muddy because of the continuous snow fall. Another factor was the several controversial calls by the officials which went against the Billies. Another season has gone into the record book. Coach Carter said. This was one of my most enjoyable seasons as a coach. I feel very sorry for the seniors because we didn't win the big one. Although the record book will show that C-K is the A A Champs, the coaching staff and I feel that the best high school football team in the state is located in Man. West Virginia. A state championship has eluded the Billies, especially the twenty graduating seniors, several received state-wide recognition: Rick Grimmett. all-state captain of the defensive team: Mitchell Means and Johnny Vance, all-state defense: Clint Waybright and Earl Clark, second team all-state offense: Mark Bowens, special honorable mention: and Kenzie Tudor, honorable mention. As the Billies pass on their tradition of pride, honor, and winning, their time to win the championship and bring home the trophy to their many loyal fans will surely come, and soon. Chuck Bailey - Statistician William Tootie Carter - Head Coach Kim Hensley - Trainer Joe Pete Burgess - Athletic Director Robert Ramsey - Assistant Coach Denny Miller - Assistant Coach Charles Proc Cook - Assistant Coach The yearbook staff wishes to thank Teddy Paynter and The Logan Banner for giving us pictures of the football games. 70 May have this dance? As early as mid-July, students were attending summer rehearsals to be ready for the upcoming year. Rehearsals continued and set the pace for our summer band camp which lasted for one week in August. As school began the band was practicing every day during and after school. We performed at every football game at home and away during regular and post season play except for one show. The performances, as well as being enjoyable, were a strong asset to our football team and fans. On September 19th we performed at our first marching competition in many years. We worked very hard for that day. Although we received no awards, the experience from the competition was invaluable to us. As soon as football season was over, we made a quick change of pace in our music by preparing for our Christmas Concert. The concert was held at a local church. It featured a brass quartet and woodwind quintet as well as our full concert band. The brass quartet was busy performing for local businesses and schools as well. It was a very fine Christmas Season for us. 84 Jennifer White Next were the spring music festivals. These festivals consisted of the Logan County Band Festival, the regional festival in Huntington, and our own spring performances. Our representation is always strong in the All Logan County Band as well as in the Huntington Area All-Area Band. We produce outstanding musicians who can fit into any musical organization very well. This time of concert season allowed us to concentrate on technique and musical understanding. It was our most important time of musical growth of the year. We opened the eyes of both our students and our community with our concert season to show that we are versatile as a band on and off the field. The past year has been a very good year for us. It had its ups and downs, but we stayed together and we will have fond memories of our members and the events for years to come. When's the last time you washed your hair?
