DEDICATION The senior class of 1976 wishes to dedicate our yearbook to Laura Hinchman for her many years of dedication to Man High School. Miss Hinchman received her AB degree in English and French from Concord College with honors and her MA degree in counseling from Marshall University. She furthered her education at Marshall University, University of Toledo, and Bemidgi Minn. State College. Miss Hinch- man has spent 21 years of her life at Man High School. She is active in profes- sional, civic, and church organizations. At the end of this school term Miss Hinch- man plans to retire after 35 years in the educational field. She plans to travel extensively. We, the class of 76, thank you Miss Hinchman for your 21 years that you have given to Man High. PHILOSOPHY In facing the problems of day to day life one must realize that there is no simple solution to all that con- fronts us. Life is a constant test of our ability to mature and to rely upon our resourcefulness. As an individual in the world of today, one should not resolve to falter along life’s path and to rely upon our faith in ourselves and our creator to succeed in whatever endeavor one so chooses. 2 Another year has passed by us with a lot of fond memories and happy times. But, even though we, the Seniors will not be back, we can remember those good times by looking through the 1976 Echo. I think it is time that I, along with the entire Echo Staff, would like to thank our sponsor, Mr. Hagood. Without his help and understanding, this book would never have been published. C0-EDIT0R9' COMMENTS Being a student at Man High School has provided many events that we can remember in our future years with fond- ness. Our Yearbook provides a method of recapturing these memories long after Graduation Day. We can remember Sadie Hawkins’ Day or relive our Senior Prom with a smile and be grateful that someone cared enough to provide us with a link tc the past through the MAN HIGH ECHO. Among the highlights of our freshman year was the assembly given by homeroom 9-4, entitled, Our Teacher. Our fresh- man class play, entitled, Just What They Wanted. The last event was Awards Day. At the end of the year we made our class trip to Camden Park. The following year, two hundred seventy-two students began a new life at Man Senior High School. Our class officers were Debi Klipa, president; Charles Clark, vice-president; Gilman Burgess, secretary; and Debbie Toppings, treasurer. Our sophomore attendant for Homecoming was Cathy Stepp. Two sophomore homerooms combined efforts and won the Homecoming float contest. The name of our float was Brewing Up a Victory. In our junior year we had been reduced to one hundred sixty-eight students. Our class officers were Becky Grubb, president; Robin Gent vice-president; Anita Bragg, secretary; and Gwen Smoot, treasurer. In order to raise money for the prom we put on a play, Finders Creepers. The theme for the prom was We May Never Pass This Way Again. Our junior attendant for the prom was Mildred Booth. At our Christmas dance Patti Caldwell was junior attendant. Gil- man Burgess and Tim Lesaca represented Man High School at Boys’ State. Anita Bragg, Cathy Stepp and Cheryl Murphy wend to Girls’ State. Tim White was the delegate for the week in Washington and Joe Robinette, Tracy Browning, John Ferguson, Debbie Foxx, Sherri Cashion and Sherry Justice went to Logan for Know Your Government Day. Barry Doss was elected President of the Student Council. Now we are seniors and we have one hundred eighty-four students. Senior class officers were Tracy Browning, president; Robin Gent, vice-president; Teresa Epperly, secretary; and Wanda Kinser, treasurer. Debbie Klipa was Miss Man High and Homecoming Queen. The Senior attendants were Mildred Booth and Cheryl Murphy. 10 Office of the Principal MAN. WEST VIRGINIA 25635 jOeaA fYl m, QvisC jOcicCj LLtiij c uv aimed- ywulua (xcm, OruC ox. Only a few of the Mines are in operation, while none of the logging concerns remained. MAN Man, Incorporated in 1918, Population 1600. Located 12 miles southeast of Logan on route 10, the town of Man was named for Ulysses Henchman, who served Logan County as a Member of the house of Delegates from 1866 to 1869. The timber industry brought the first settlers to the vicinity, it was followed by the establishing of the first coal company in 1912. Man is regarded as a class 4 town with authority and limitations derived from the West Virginia Code for Municipalities. Candidated for public offices are elected on a partisan basis. In addition to being a qualified voter, there is a six months residence requirement for voting in city elections. Sources of Income, General fund income includes police fines, parking meters, receipts and a percentage of income from the State Liquor Store Sales Tax. The town also receives a share of prop- erty taxes collected by the county. The Fire Department consists of a volunteer fire chief and a crew, usually ten in number of volunteers. Training courses under the direction of the fire chief are given throughout the year. Two employed policemen under the authority of the mayor, constitutes the Police Department for the town of Man. County. State and Federal Services are utilized when needed. There are no over- night jail accomodations for the town, the jail maintained by the county is used for this purpose. STUDENT BODY AND TEACHERS AT TAPUN MANIAI TKAININli C’LASa 73 HISTORY John Pelter, son of Isaac and Mary Ann Pelter, was bom on January 27, 1905, at Carlisle, near Oak Hill in Fayette County. His parents migrated to America, with 5 children, from the Midlands of England. At the beginning of W.W. 1, Isaac moved his expanding brood to Acco- ville, in Logan County to work in the Coal Mines. Young John, being very unsatisfied with his Education at Accoville, hiked into Man to survey the possibility of better teaching facilities. He received lodging and allowance for being maintenance man for the entire building. Within 3 years he graduated as valedictorian of his class. He received a scholarship to WVU that paid him 37.50 per semester. After attaining his Bachelors degree in political science, he became a teacher at Omar Junior High School. In 1932, he was elected to his first term in West Virginia House of Delegates. He was recog- nized as one of the few in the legislature who fully comprehended the virtues and consequences of Roosevelt’s cataclysmic programs. In 1935, he beat out Ralph Heiner of Pendleton County for speaker of the House. In Washing- ton he was looked upon as one of the rising spokesman for President Franklin D. Roosevelt's revolutionary New Deal. He was 29 years of age. In second term as member of House of Dele- gates he was installed as the youngest speaker in History.
