THYSELF In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Polonius gives counsel to his son Laertes before he (Laertes) sets off for France. His departing words are: To thine own self be true; And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. These are words that one can construct a life around. As an individual, I am attempt- ing to understand my distinctiveness, my uniqueness, my specialness, my humanity and to preserve this as I grow, develop, and to relate to a world humanity. In this will lie my dignity. As an individual, I am attempting to maintain the idealism of my youth, but to temper it with reality; to keep my aspirations high, but within the realm of possibility; and to strive for excellence in everything, but if I fail, I shall never cease to try. It is important to me to seek for truth and beauty everywhere, to love generally and specifically, to hope and never give in to despair, to have a sense of humor so as not to take myself too seriously, and to cultivate a love of learning and a desire to know that will continue throughout my life and to act as wisely as possible on my knowledge. lastly, I want always to remember that I am only a small part of humanity, but a very special and sacred small part, as is every other individual. Miss Fannie Waller
