Only through such a spirit can we expect to meet the educational needs of our youth of today. Training for citizenship in a democracy demands the best from all of us and we must fully charge our responsibilities if we are to preserve those things which are so dear to us - liberty and freedom. We hope your graduation will not terminate our service to you. DEAR ALVIN, Sorry you cauIdn't be in Man the other day, so Iwill tell you about the laying ofthe new field house's cornerstone . The fieldhouse has great promise of being completed by I966. Our old friend, Governor Sidney Williams, was in charge of the ceremony. The guest speaker was our Senator, William Hamb, who married Peggy Sue Acord, a famous mod- el. Our Congressmen--Clayton Belcher, Paul Cook, Sam Short, Gene Myers, Johnny Thur- man, and Walter Woods--returned just in time to attend this memorial occasion . The corner- stone was a beautiful cinder block, having been built by the Bobby Hatfield's Cinder Block Company . When Principal Bobby Brooks handed me the blue prints, I saw that the building had been designed by John Butler, Douglas McKee, and Mason Toler. Repre- senting the Matron's Gossip Circle were Anna Barnes, Anita Cashion, Mary Corns, Ruby Brown, Janet Browning, Tina Gibson, Betty Kilgore, and Sylvia Sargent. Leandro Dub- anowich was there with her husband, who was an outstanding football player of the class of '50, I went over to talk to them, and Leandro said that Victor Adams is now the cashier at the Bank of Robinette. She also told me that Connie Baldwin, Garnett Adkins, and Peggy Rowe, T.W.A. Stewardresses, were visiting her for the event. Then Alvin Booth, who is in business with Werley Vanover and Douglas Frazier running Man's newest, busiest, and best iewelry store, walked up for a chat. Alvin said that Joann Booher and Irene Burns's dress shop nearly burn- ed down but that it was saved iust in time by Fire Chief Tommy Vernatter and Firemen Franklin Brewer, Grady Brown, and Jerry Browning. He saidthat Barbara Casey stopped in the stare the other day. You know she rep- resents the Low Price Jewelers Wholesale Company. I bumped into the former Lillie Griffin, who told me that her husband, Johnny White and his band, were playing at the Queen Nite Spot. You knowthis used to be The Center , but Bennie bought it and now has a nightclub overlooking the creek. Mona Aldridge, Pat Grubb, and Frances Browning are playing in White's band, and Helen Adams is his vocal- ist. She told me that Kathleen Bryant and Shir- Iene Moore are running a Kindergarten las a sideline for of course they are both rnarriedl. After the ceremony, I went into a new cafe and found that our old classmate, Cline McNeely was the proprietor. After a lang talk with him, he showed me a record that he had been keeping of our class of '53. Glancing through, I saw that Betty Dempsey andVir- ginia Vinson were teaching school at Toney Fork. Euneva Walls, Patty Hanshaw, and Shir- Iey Epperhart are social investigators. Peggy Campbell is a private nurse of Dr. Jack Mont- gomery. James Brumfield and Dewey Cook are operating a new laundry, James and Dewey's, which is the biggest thing to hit Man in a long time. Imogene LaFon and Eu- gene Cline are living on love I was about to read on when I heard an old familiar voice. I . 59 JANUARY 1963 On looking up, Isaw Bill Browning. NCIIUY' ally, we got to talking, and Bill told me that he was coaching at Man High School and that his assistant coaches were Jimmy Clevenger who rode in from Buffalo Creek every basebflll season to help him out and Hurley Venoy Wl't0 was a great All American center in 1960. Browning said that he just saw Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Clark, Mrs. Clark being the former Joan Browning. After telling Bill goodbye, I walked out and across the street. l saw the successful new show run by Ralph Kennedy and Robert Mangus. Elaine Wiley, Bonnie Williams, Jimmy Vance, Walter Parton, and Andy Docy have the lead- ing parts in this production, the Man Melody of I963. On the posters, I saw that Pauline Dingess was being starred in the new produc- tion, The Man Follies, produced by Roy Watson and Windall Lester. Mary Chapman, Frances Goodman, Janet Gearhart, Wanda Meeks, and Carolyn Simpkins are chorus girls in this production. I started on off but only walked a few feet when I saw a familiar face in the passing crowd. Naturally, I stopped to talk to my old friend Nancy Parsley. She told me that she was on her way to Estelle Lester and Alice Montgom- ery's beauty shop. She told me that Mamie Runyon and Raymond Stapleton did get married the summer after graduation and have two darl- ing little boys. As time was running short, I told her good- bye and went on to the Mangus-Miller Hotel, which is run by Joe Mangus and Dennie Miller. Walking across the lobby, I saw Vernon Rice who is Champion Hog Caller in the county. He said that he had been to our Alma Mater and that Ruth McCoy, Anna Smith, and Aud- rey Thompson were all teaching school there. He also informed me that Sonny Toth was a Professor at Saunders College. Max West was running the soda shop. While I was standing at the fountain, who should walk in but Dr. Don- ald Harvey. I pulled Doc over to a table and soon learned that the new hospital in South Man was in operation. On the staff were Mary Ellis, Betty Harvey, Virginia Elswick, Thelma Farris, and Irene Maynard. He said that he had treated Eleanor Williamson fora sprained ankle but that she disappeared and was now lost and unaccount- ed for. Donald also said that Anna Toler was the Superintendent of nursing at the hospital. As I left the hotel, I took one more look at the town. Walking down the street, I stopped at the Man Gazette office. Eva Sue Carroll is the society editor. Betty Frye and Pat McLain are the owners. Eva said that Bill Mathena was the arteditor and that some of the social events of the community involve our old classmates. Those who have recently taken the leap are Betty Abraham, Emma Johnson, Billie Lawson, Betty Slone, Lorraine Toler, and Eunice Vance. Well, Alvin, I guess that takes in about everything, and I'd better say goodbye, Your old buddy, Frank '25 'ff' ' ynrv' au, ,.
