The Quill and Scroll Society. under the sponsorship ol' Miss Francis. has as its purpose the advancement of literary efforts on the part of the students. Once a year the society publishes the Orange and Black Leuzxex, containing the short stories, poems, and essays which have won prizes as the best of each of the three classes during a competition held earlier in the year. The society is composed of the writing and business staffs of The Record and the Mahiscan, the mem- bers being chosen for scholarship and journalistic merit. lts president is Peter Greeman, vice-president is lohn Taub, and secretary-treasurer is Tinka Risk. Two groups of students are elected yearly, and the maiority of these are Seniors although outstanding Iuniors are also included. The society is an international one: the members keep in touch with the activities of other groups through the Quill and Scroll Magazine. to which every member may subscribe. In order to publish the Orange and Bfaclq Leaves, which is the main purpose ol' the organization. its members sell the programs which are a part of every football game. The money collected is used for the Leaves' it there is a surplus, the society uses it to pur- chase a gift lor the school. Much care is spent in mak- ing the magazine one of the best of its kind, and since each student may contribute to it through his writings. the interest in it is high. Une of the most amusing activities of the club to the members are the bi-annual initiations. These initi, ations, to which Mr. McLain and his wife, as well as other faculty members. are invited, are the source of niuch entertainment to all who attend. For the privi- lege of belonging to the society the inductees arc dressed in outlandish costumes and perform stunts, encouraged from the sidelines by the members. Usu- ally, photographs are taken of the proceedings to re- cord the event, the resulting pictures are sometimes startling, but always amusing. Even with these dith- culties, the society is the goal of all aspiring journalists.
