MAMARONECK By the waters of the Sound Near the boundless, blue Atlantic Lived the tribe of brave Mohegans Lived the red skinned maids and warriors And the gods smiled well upon them For their hilly land was fertile And the council fires burned brightly Where fresh water meets the salt. In sixteen sixty-one, the wind blew Blew sails of white to the blue horizon, And the strangers' gold was shiny And their boots were thick and polished. One, he called himself lohn Richbell, Held converse with Chief Mamaroneckg Showed him hoes and guns and bulletsg Coveted the hilly acres. Then Chief Mama1'oneck made treaty When he saw the white-men's goods- Signed away the mystic inlets And the woodland and the meadows. Through the centuries .settlers many Saw this spot and liked it well. Soon there grew to be a town there Named in honor of the chieftain, By the deep and sapphire harbor Where fresh water meets the salt. When the Revolution came On each hilltop was a mansion,' And the Post Road led the carriages From New York down east to Boston. People travelling on this road Looked for homes and chose Mamaroneck. Schools and banks were built' trains ca e thereg , m Docks outlined the deep blue harbor. Home town by the sea, they called it, Suburb of the great Manhattan. Then in nineteen thirty-six In honor of the village birthday Councilmen declared a feast-week find all people in the village Honored Richbell and Mamaroneck.
