We have en- joyed a successful year in every respect. Many of our junior boys have participated in interscholastic athletics and have bolstered Mal- verneis football, basketball, wrestling, track, and baseball teams immeasurably. Bob Mealey cli- maxecl the year's athletic achievements when he won the county cross-country championship. Several of our members have been successful as members of the tlebate squad, and John Ingram placetl third in the county American Legion oratorical contest. Perhaps our greatest accomplishment was the impressive induction of twelve of our classmates into the National Senior Honor Society. Under the very capable direction of Mr. Allan johnson, the junior Prom was bigger and better 4 than ever this year, and the -Iunior play, Five for Bad Luck, also was enjoyed by everyone. Thanks to conscientious oiheers and to our class advisers, Miss Fay, Mr. johnson, Mrs. Dempsey, and Mr. DeGraff, we have compiled an cn- viable record. We are eagerly and confidently awaiting next year, when we will be full-fledged members of the senior class. President Viee Pres. We have a lot to be proud of too, especially our reputation in track and jayvee basketball and baseball. ln October we dis- covered that some of our classmates had hidden acting ability, and with their help we produced a hilarious play, Cleaned and Pressed, directed by Miss janda. We contributed generously to needy causes and with the persuasion of Miss Lyster, our class adviser, even paid our class dues! President Vice Pres. Midst loud shouting and wild hitting, teams were finally picked. It was a close contest to determine which players were worthy to represent Malverne on the honor team at interschool playdays and on our opponents' playing fields, but all teams proved worthy of the choice. Practice makes perfect, the members have learned. Their familiar strains of music can be heard issuing from the music room during the eighth period every day. The constant rehearsing and individual practice make the band an organ- ization of which our school is justly proud. Throughout the year the group has been very active, performing in assemblies and on numer- ous other occasions under the expert direction of Mr. Darryl Mooney, a newcomer to Mal- verne. They played in the Mineola fair parade and the community holiday parade, along with presenting two joint concerts with the East Rockaway band, one at Malverne, the other at East Rockaway. Along with the chorus, the group participated in the mid- season concert in ljebruary, which was one of the highlights of Malverne's musical year. Selec- tions from Victor Herbert's Red Mill and Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna were played. A Sunday afternoon concert given in March was also on the band's schedule. The music makers also participated in the Nassau County Band and The Arts Come To Hemp- stead again this year, and they have played under such notable conductors as Olge Windin- stad, Nobel Cain, and Ernest Williaiias. Looking back over a successful year, the band thanks Mr. Mooney, Robert Alaegcr, student conductor, and Mr. Paul Byron, supervisor of marching. czzzf of Mc Qncu Moa, H12 mixed choir, under the direction of Mrs. W'right, has progressed steadily. The boys of the group have developed into a stronger section than ever before. Ambitious concerts highlighted the school year. In December the Christmas program was given in assembly and for the community. In lfebruary the midseason concert, performed in coopera- tion with the band, featured separate boys' and girls' numbers along with mixed selections. The Founders' Day Program in lfebruary was for the Parent-Teacher Association. The annual spring concert occurred in May: and following tradition, part of the choir will sing at com' mencement. Forming the backbone of the chorus al the Mineola liair. our boys and girls participated in the celebration of the one-hundredth birthday of the New York State Teachers Association. Mrs. W'right was chosen to conduct the All- Nassau chorus. ln late November a mixed group was selected to represent Malverne in the all-State Music Conference, which was held at Riverhead. The position of manager of the chorus, no small honor, was given to our conductor, Mrs. XVright. Sixteen members of the choir were members of the All-Nassau chorus, which sang in The Arts Come to Hempstead. The group was conducted by the famous Doctor Goodhart and one num- ber by Mr. Fordham from East Rockaway. Several students tried their hand at conducting during the year, Leila Greenwood, Audrey Park- inson, Charles tfacobsen, and Robert qlaeger. The first outstanding event was the interclass play contest in the early fall. Formerly this was held in the spring and the senior play was given in the fall. The procedure was reversed, however, in order to permit those participating in the senior play, who would otherwise have been barred from the others because of the danger of unfair competition, to have the opportunity to be in both if the occa- sion arose. The sophomores, directed by Miss Madlyn Janda, presented Cleaned and Pressed. Vive for Bad Luck was the offering of the junior class, under Mr. Allan Johnsons supervision. The seniors won the contest with Make Room for Rodney, making it the second year in succession that the class of '46 has taken the cup. Make Room for Rodneyu featured Bob Suarez in the title role, supported by Wentlell Sylvester, Betty Berg- buchler, jane and Daniel McCormick, Leila Greenwood, Rudy Wurtz, and Ruth Kenney, and was coached by Miss Margaret Wilson. Stumbling blocks in the form of flu and grippe were encountered while preparing for the Christ- mas program. The play had to be abandoned and an inspiring Christmas concert was pre- sented by the mixed chorus. Highlighting the year's theatrical ventures was the senior play, Ramshackle Inn, a mystery- farce. For the past two years the seniors have been going in for heavy drama, with Double Doorv and Guest in the House. Ramshackle Inn concerns the adventures of a middle-aged spinster librarian, who buys an inn, sight un- seen, and proceeds to get involved in three murders. The unique plot was further enhanced by the fascinating performance given by Bar- bara Sorenson, Charles Jacobsen, Nyla Herber, Robert Vandell, Barbara Murtha, Kay Hansen. Harry Carson, Nancy Leggett, Will Butter- worth, .lean Appleton, Edward Kyburl, Robert Harries, Winifl'ed lieckel, Robert Suarez, and Rudy XVurtl. Mrs. lilizabeth Ackerman was responsible for the fine coaching job. The dramatics class, under Mrs. Aclterman's direction, hopes to commemorate Memorial Day with the presentation of the Ballad of Amer- ieans. The climax of the year will he reached with the production of the Senior Revue, a com- bination of sltits, gags, elowning, dancing, vocal and instrumental music and anything else the seniors can conjure up. It is expected that every senior will participate-all one hundred and eighteen of them. None of these performances would have been sueeessful without the hard work and ingenuity of Miss Grote and her ahle stage crew, who spent long hours during and after school designing and building scenery and planning novel light- ing effects of which many a professional would have been proud. As a whole the dramatic year has proved ex- tremely prolitable. The path was not always an easy one, nor were the diflieulties surmounted merely small ridges. However, we allowed our- selves no opportunities for remaining in ruts. Vile have paved the wayg it is for you to follow. ii a: ua. . W 'Y U I , 4? 4 1. , aj , - .. , vw 1 K? ' N Nr . . Science, shop, music, art, and home economies departments are work- shops of activity with their after-school groups. There is never a quiet moment in the music department. If Mr. Mooney isn't instructing someone to hlow the trumpet or draw a how across A1 violin, then he is directing the entire hand in its rehearsal. lfrom the beginner to the senior hand constant training is heing given. There is some instrumental organization of which you may hecome an active part if you are interested. Perhaps you prefer using your voice. Again you will he quicltly cared for in the voice departs ment, directed hy Mrs. lfva XVright. You may join .1 mixed group or it single group, or you may become part of a quartet or Ll trio. Perhaps you would like to make your own record. This is also possible. For those who are not musically inclined we have some splendid creative nrt and shop groups. You may play for the sheer fun of playing, or you may want to make it more serious and go in for competition. There is cross country for those who delight in running, or you may try high jumping, broad jumping, or relay racing and enter one of the interschool Held day matches. If you are more interested in ball games, you have basketball, football, or 7--w baseball to enter. The seventh grader does not have quite the same opportunity of entering these sports as the eighth grader or the ninth grader, but he does have the ropes, parallel bars, horses, and spring boards to work on. He may also have the weight for wrestling. The girls are cared for equally well. They have their volleyball, softball, tennis, archery, and basketball. Many are equal to the boys on the ropes, bars, mats, and horses. Volk dancing has also interested the girls. Sports are not only muscle building activities, but they are also character building activities. We hope they'll always remain a main part of our school life. C-0H,.ill'CllCfiOlL C3'5!A6d NDER the capable supervision of genial Mr. Phippard, superintendent of buildings and grounds, the custodial staff has worked tire- lessly to make Malverne High School a clean, attractive building. There is apparently no limit to their patience or to their willingness to help with every activity, whether it is putting up the risers for a concert, trucking chairs from the gym to the music room, or repairing a stubborn locker. They have not confined their attention to the inside of the building. Much of their energy is spent seeding the lawn, setting out ornamental bushes, planting flowers, or working on the field. Mr. Papst's smiling face behind his pipe has become an institution in Malverne, and Mr. Rhodes and Mr. Abrams have long been a vital part of the system. Recent arrivals, who are equally helpful, are Mrs. Mal- lette. Mr. Koster, Mr. XValter. Mr. Keating, and Mr. Frazier. nw' Jog n iplra rr! 5 W, VW, aw ' war Page sei'm1iy-nm 111 - If 1 X 11118 1 I1 111 1 11 15111111 X111111s1111 S L X11 1 11111 X11 11 1 11111 1511 ll 1 1511 1111 11 1511 1 5 IX 111 IX 5 11 gl 151 K 5 K 11111111 1511111111 Il1f1111111l5111,l111111 151 11111 s N11lI111 1151 1 1 1 IX X1111 N 1111 1151111 S 1111 151111 11 KN 11 1 51111 1 X 1 1 1 1 111 11111 151111111 L1 111111111 15111 gl111 1111 X 1 1111 1 1 X11111111 1511111111 15 1 J1 1111111111111 C l111511L1 1111 111111 X1111 1 11111111 1111 1111 1 111 C 111111111 IIN L N 11 1118 L N UU 1 I 1 111111 11 7 1 1111 1 1111131111111 J 11111 N NUI! 1 11 1 11 I XL! 11111 1 18 1 1 11 K I1 1111111111 1 UI 1111 K 11 11 111111111 11111111 11111XX11l1L 'X x 1 1 11 ll 111X L 2 JU C1 .5 1 J C N11'..11111N11'.11'1'111g.' 111'. 1111 N11' . 151ll1.1111c 11.111 1'l'N N111 111111 N11's. 15.1111 1f. 1X1'11'1' 1.111 1f11.11,1. 1'11 Nlrx.151 '1'1X11.11'11 N111 .111 1 N111s.1 .ll'11l C, 11111 151'1 I' .'X11c1 1,1l1'1N C,1111111'1 111111' 1 1 Nl.1'g.11'1'1C'111-1.111 N111 .11111 N11' . -1111111 11. 1X1' '111'1' .1131 ll 1. 1 .11111'11, c..lI'1J1 1 '1111 15.11111.11'.1 13.1111 N112 .11111 N11' .
