A loT oT crediT is due To Paul Herron, who broke up The German- Town deTense wiTh his long-range bombing. Assured now OT aT leasT a TiTle Tie, we wenT inTo The Penn CharTer game as heavy TavoriTes. BUT once again iT wasn'T in The cards, and Tor The Third sTraighT year Malvern losT The TiTle game. Thus we are now co-champs Tor The second sTraighT year, This Time wiTh G.A. We did have our momenTs oT glory and individual heroes, Though. Who will ever TorgeT Joe Mc6ill's 85 TooT' Ozark lke shoT in The ConesToga scrimmage. fi-fav. ii Perhaps This is a Time To Teel joyous abouT The baskeTbalI siTuaTion aT Malvern. In The IasT Three years we have Tinished second, Tied Tor TirsT, and Tied Tor TirsT respecTiveIy. To add To The successTul pasT There is'The prospecT oT a brighT TuTure. Indeed, wiTh Three sTarTers reTurning-Joe McGill, PaT Mahoney, and Joe STraub-and wiTh Bill McGovern and Mike Kulzer moving up, you musT admiT ThaT Things do look raTher good. BuT as we look aT The pasT Three years and look ahead To The TuTure, we can'T help buT Teel sad. IT is The end oT an eral Yes, iT's True ThaT success in baskeTball may, and probably'will conTinue. buT iT won'T be The same. There will be one big diTTerence, Dr. Eugene Powers will noT be The coach. OT all The sTudenTs aT Malvern, we, The seniors, know him besT. We enTered inTo varsiTy compeTiTion in I956-57, The TirsT year ThaT Dr. Powers was coach. IT has been a happy associaTion. In The IasT Three years we have Tollowed his Teams, cheered his Teams, and suTTered wiTh his Teams. We have swallowed Three biTTer pills wiTh Dr. Powers- The Three games, any one oT which if Turned inTo a vicTory would have given Malvern iTs TirsT ouTrighT championship. Dr. Powers has been a model coach. IT is a well-known TacT ThaT a coach's iob does noT end once he leaves The gym. IT is a iusT as well- known TacT ThaT Dr. Powers has been more Than a coach To his play- ers, he has been a Triend. Dr. Powers managed To make ThaT line separaTing player and coach as slim as possible, yeT he mainTained sTricT discipline. IT is raTher obvious ThaT he is a good coach. JusT Take a look aT his record. I-Iis TirsT year aT Malvern an I8-4 record and placed second in The league wiTh an 8-2 log. The nexT year he Tinished wiTh I3-5 and again 8-2 in The lnTerac To Tie wiTh I-Iaverford Tor The Tifle. This pasT year he ended wiTh I7-4 and again was 8-2 in The league Tor anoTher co-championship, This Time wiTh GA. I-Iis ToTal record is 48-I3, a .796 percenTage and 24-6 in lnTerac compeTiTion Tor an even .800 percenTage. BUT This is noT inTended To exTolI his coaching abiliTy. This is sorT oT a IasT goodbye, a IasT Thank you. IT is our IasT opporTuniTy To say Thanks To our mosT disTinguished graduaTe. So To you, Dr. Powers. goodbye, Thank you, and good luck.
