Time doth not rest, nor rolls it idly round about these senses of ours, but it worketh strange changes in the mind. -St. Augustine afaewofmf Four years with the Augustinian Fathers have quickly passed. Would that we could show our gratitude in an adequate manner to these loyal sons of St. Augustine! The training we have received from them cannot be found in text books alone, for they have taught us not only the arts and sciences, but what is greater, a love for Christ and His Holy Church, a love for those ideals that form a true Christian gen- tleman. In honor of their spiritual father and holy founder, we have chosen as our theme . . . St. Augustine Bishop of Hippo and illustrious Doctor of the Church 1354 - 4305 4 .Reverend Joseph A. Grilterty, O.S..A. We, the Senior Class of 1951, affectionately dedicate the 1951 Malvernian to our teacher, counsellor and friend, Father Joseph Grifterty, in gratitude for his untiring efforts in our behalf and for his many years of loyal service at Malvern Preparatory School. 5 ff K 71 S Ex I0 X l l l ,I ,fix '?- L A-u.. ,- .l'-.?- 'fx' 411, Qi , x FT ? There we were, the little Frosh of Malvern, on the day of our initiation. We felt quite at home after that, for we realized that from then on we could be among the Malvern greats. Following through in true Malvernian spirit, many JOSEPH A. McCAHON JAMES R. BIRLE Dowingtown, Pa. Drexel Park, Pa. President Vice-President Widow of us, like our predecessors, participated in sports and other extra-curricular activities. The fourth team in football and the thirteen-year-old basket- ball team were composed almost entirely of Frosh. Does every year pass as quickly as this? For a few months, June seemed so far away. Then sud- denly winter passed and gave way to spring. Now the final exams, and Freshman year is but a memory. WILLIAM J. BANEY ANDREW M. MEEHAN Upper Darby, Pa. Philadelphia, Pa. President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer S Now that we, the Class of '53, have reached the mid-point of our school days at Malvern, we look back to that first day on Malvern's campus and recall our earnest desires to become her loyal sons and distinguished Malvernians. Whether we have succeeded to this date, let our actions speak for us. Many of us have excelled in the classroom and have been rewarded by coveted places on the Qfictafzq Headmaster's honor roll consistently. Some of us have won our letters on the fields of sport and have further shown our school spirit by eager participa- tion in other extra-curricular activities. Secretary Treasurer cmdafzgf' The happy days of summer over, back to school trudged we fifty sunburnt lads. At first, we found it hard getting back to the books, and it was not until two weeks before the quarterly exams that we really settled down. But who could study when the memories of a shaded fishing nook or of a shining ocean came stealing into our minds, like a thief, to seize our attention. Before we knew it, Thanksgiving, then Christmas, had come and gone, and we were focusing our LEONARD H. DAGIT Merion, Pa. JOSEPH M. SHARKEY Merion, Pa. President Vice-President attention on the midyears. After these we assumed a host of extra-curricular activities, including news- paper and yearbook, basketball and swimming, plays and social activities. Spring came with its traditional bad cases of fever. Once again, our minds followed our eyes out the window to the baseball diamond. How we survived this quarter no one knows. But survive we did, and when June rolled around, there were not a few of us sad to see the year end. HARRY WILLIAMSON WILLIAM B. 'CORR Newportville, Pa. Wynnewood, Pa. Now we, the Class of 1951, step from the ranks of the student body into those of the alumni of Malvern Prepara- tory School. This transition is an occasion for both ioy and sorrow, ioy, because it was the goal of our ambitions for four years, and sorrow, because it marks the end of the most happy and carefree days of our lives. For the past four years we have studied, played, and prayed together to make ourselves better men, and to uphold the traditions of Malvern. Now that we have reached the end of the road, we look back and see that we did at least a fairly good iob of it. Many of us were outstanding in studies, athletics, and leadership, and all, every one in his own way, tried to do something for Malvern. Our diploma is our treasured reward. During the course of our school days, Malvern has made great strides. This year for the first time, our Alma Mater participated fully in the extensive program of the Interacademic League. The enroll- ment of the school has greatly increased and, as we leave the familiar campus, we see new buildings rising among the old, the symbol of Malvern's progress. We do not pretend to be the cream of the crop, but we have tried hard to do our best and, for that, we hope Malvern will remember us. Clarke. 7 Coached by Stanley Jaworowski and Tex Flan- nery, and captained by Joe Hayden and Hank Smith, Malvern emerged from the 1950 football season with a record of 3 wins and 4 losses. Things started off with a bang when the Friars con- quered Bryn Athyn, Penn Charter and Haverford. However, this glory was shortlived, for they tasted their first defeat at P.M.C. Prep., followed by losses to Episcopal, Germantown Academy, and Rutgers Prep. Speed, power and drive were the victory keynotes of our first Inter-Academic League team, whereas John Giordano Joseph Hayden F.B. co-capt. John Tex Flannery Line Coach numerous iniuries were the causes for potential wins resulting in losses. It is difficult to spotlight any one person for out- standing achievement, but Joe Hayden, Hank Smith, Bill Dempsey, Bill Hally, and Tom Agnew must be congratulated for making the All-lnterac Teams. Much credit is due not only to the Varsity and coaches, but also the managers and iunior teams, who all helped make football prominent at Malvern. Henry Smith George Kelly co-capt. Joe McArdle, an outstanding player and Franny Murphy, high scorer for the year with 'I77 points, co-captained the Blue- White hoopsters. Except for a few newcomers in the ranks, Coach Stanley Jaworowski worked mostly with veterans of last year's squad. However, despite the promising material, the team just didn't click. Few boys participated in the sport, and even fewer paid much, attention to the results of the competition with other schools. Then something happened that changed this. Boys by the tens and twenties started going out for track, people became interested in the Prepsters' meets, and track became firmly established as a maior sport at Malvern. During the '51 season, the squad, coached by Mr. James Tuppeny, produced an enviable record of five wins and two losses in dual competition, a first and second place in two triangular meets. ln the Bridgeton Relays, Malvern placed third. One week later a Malvern quartet made up of Giordano, Clarke, Wood, and Mita captured first place in the coveted National Prep School Mile Relay Championship, defeating over twenty other competitors. Mike Davis, in spite of an unfortunate start, took third place in the breast stroke. The medley reelay made up of Mike Davis, Stefan Habsburg, and Henry Friedel gave a good showing by taking third place. Krupa, our '51 book has at last taken form. STAFF Co-Editors-in-Chief. . , .Edwin Daly, '51, Andrew Debicki, '51 Copy Editor . ...,.... ,.Thomas Prendergast, '51 Assistants ..,.,... Between the two groups, a close co-operation between the faculty and the parents of the students is brought about. Each group sponsors several social ac- tivities each year. The Fall and Spring card parties held at Wanamaker's were sponsored by the P.T.A. for the benefit of the Chapel Fund of Malvern. The Father- Son Banquet and Family Day are the highlights of the Father-Son Organiza- tion, whose officers for the past year in- cluded Mr. Eustace Wolfington, Presi- dent, Mr. Frank Mita, Vice-President, Mr. John Flynn, Secretary, and Mr. Marshall Halphen, Treasurer. Ground breaking for the proposed Malvern chapel was held on Family Day, May 6, 1951. l Y' I ke Zap -a- gnome!! Under the capable direction of Fr. Francis Gilligan, the Cap-n-Bonnet Players have presented top-notch plays through the years, but none have been so well received as this year's presentations.
