The big news during the month was Homecoming, October 23, which the Leopards celebrated with a win over Jacksonville. Other victories by the Leopards were over Camden and Russellville and a tie with Conway. The Student Council dance following the home- coming game was enjoyed by a large portion of the student body. NOVEMBER September marked the opening of school with the usual long lines waiting to receive registration cards. The largest classes in the history of Malvern High School began the old grind of studying, lectures, and extracurricular activities. Football season got off to a bang with three straight wins over Sheridan, Morrilton and Crossett before falling before the bruis- ing Catholic High Rockets. OCTOBER The month of November saw the students receiving their first vacation since school opened. Two days were given the first week of November for State Teachers Meeting and two more days the last week for Thanksgiving The football team ended its most successful season in recent years with wins over Benton, Smackover, and Arkadelphia and a tie with Fairview. iixciitement ran high in December .is Iilllc kept drawing nearer and nearer for thc two weeks Christmas vacation. Basketball season not well under way and the Regional Tournament was held .i1 our gym with Catholic High coming out on top. .-X Christmas Decorations contest was sponsored by the Student Council and nearly all homerooms participated. Exits. Franklin's room won the top honor-. School closed on litiday, Dec- ember la, with an assembly which featured Christmas singing by the choirs and students and accompanied by the band. JANUARY CALENDAR DECEMBER Q. i 7. . February was also a month for snow as we had late season snow during the month. One of the many new things tried at our school this year was a Valentine's Post Office which was a very big success. Another very exciting event was Malvern's first annual Bas- ketball Coronation. The Coronation was very successful and for some, it will hold a lasting place in their mem- ories. On February 26 our 1959-60 basketball season came to a halt--a sad time for many playing their last MHS game. Snow was the big topic of conver- sation during January. We were back in school from Christmas holidays only two days when we received an additiona 1 'after this it was necessary for everyone ' to settle down to study for semester Q tests. The student body elected the Cam- pus Sweetheart who was Jimmie Rae Davidson. FEBRUARY holiday of two days because of the snow. MARCH CALENDAR During the month of April, our thoughts were turned to a more serious vein as many of us were attending regular or special services commem ing Easter. On April l and 2, Malv High was honored to serve as the host school for the State Convention ofthe National Honor Society. By this time, track season was well under way with our Leopard Thincla making a good showing. As always, each member of the team was doing his best and was trying to repeat the winning ofthe District IIIAA Champ- ionship. Ofal' Cfll ds MAY One of the biggest t-tems pzi our school year is the Student tlonuttl election. This Line when de-e:'.'.ri,1 juniors .ire nominated for Student Council president and vice presnient. .Xlong with the election vonzes .ill kinds of campaigning from poster parties to public debating. Another exciting event is Twirp Week, when the girls take up the Leap Year pursuit by asking the boys for dates. Sadie Hawkins Day is gi popular feature of 'lwirp Week. APRIL ,-,.-....,.... May, the last month ofthe school year, arrived with the usual flurry of festive events. The Junior-Senior Party, the prom, and all of the other senior activities are held in this short month. Graduation closed out the month with the good-bys and nostalgic memories especially of the seniors. nj ug ,lgggw M393 ' ,Lf Xlf C4'rpuJo.'c Q if Jflvlr, A f ' Amllffg I1 L'Vr!',,f,,J!7 A' .nl an-f.'-G-1 'f IQIHIQ full' , l q!l'.:lf Kan, gvf.-0. ,f.fr V f .f',,.X-.1. 4 4 .K lll'GIlL'O 8 DMINISWMAT lsgtdnfllffr f 5 SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS LYAL L. Jim has been an outstanding football player at the University of Arkansas for the past four years. His Junior and Senior years, he was named to the All-South- west Conference dream team. He was further honored to have been named to the Associated Press list of selections for .-Xll-Arnerican honors. He sparked the RaLor- backs to a victory at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida. ln addition he was chosen to represent the South in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. During his junior year, he married his high school sweetheart, who is also a stu- dent at the University. We are very happy to have had Bette and Jim Mooty as our judges for this year's contest. Together the Senior and B team had 16 victories, 1 loss, and 2 ties. The seniors suffered the only defeat, that coming to the top Class AA team in the state, Catholic High They were also responsible for the 2 ties. One was upset by Fairview and the other with a fine team from Conway. The Malvern senior team fielded their finest team since 1953 as they racked up a total of 292 points to the opponent's 101, Included in the victories was a 62 to O slaughter of Sheridan, Malvern's biggest victory since 1931. Cther wins were over some of the better AA teams in the state and the Leopards ended the season at the top of the AA ratings for the state. I Coach Bill Hunt was the head mentor for the Leopards this season. In his third year of head coaching at the high school, he has now won 20 games, lost 12 and tied three. Over the past year and even the previous one, the outstanding thing about the Leopard senior team is that most of the fans don't think they'll fare nearly as well as they do. The Leopards were one of the smallest teams in the state in AA ball and didn't facea team that was smaller. However, they used some magic formula to rack up numerous opponents, some weighing as much as 50 pounds more per man. Malvem B team, made up of mostly sophomores, racked up seven opponents and finished their season undefeated. They scored 140 points to only 39 for the opponents. Coach for the B team was O. L. Pearson. Qian I I P 5 MANAGERS '-.XIX 'Hi EY 1PPI,IE'ID flii- I.INITxf?,N'I TY 5 I-iuglish, RubcrtBoQl1eJ:l, and an ziobxmou. , V by -fx L .M 6 Yfh 1 1+- . , . A school is known by its spirit and, sometimes in the long winter months of basketball season, the spirit of the student body seems to die down. The loyal cheerleaders are never known to fall down on the job. They are always there spurring the team on to victory and consoling the boys when they meet defeat. The rafters of the gym ring out with the yells they lead, and we look to them to keep our pep up at all times. MALVERN ENDS CONWAY'S REIGN Last year a good portion of the District 3,-XA record book was renovated as our boys halted a ten year Conway track and field domination and beat the Conway Wampus Cats 48 5X6 to 40. Six records were shattered and a seventh was equalled. The efforts of all other teams couldn't overcome the Malvern point spread which was built largely in the field events where the Leopards won three firsts and several seconds and thirds. Malvern picked up 10 1X3 points in the high jump in which Dale Kent tied the existing district mark of 5 feet, 10 U4 inches. Larry Fite tied for second place in the high jump and Rocky Robinson and Eddy Scrimshire tied for second place in the pole vault. These accomplishments are but a few reached by our boys and we are very proud of the fine record they have established.
