SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION This was a good year even though a cloud — the issue of the consolidation of the Marshall and Malta Bend School Districts — hovered over the Malta Bend School. On November 7, however, the cloud dissipated when citizens in both districts voted and overwhelmingly defeated the proposi- tion. Insuring a good, successful year entails much hard work, time, and energy on the part of the ad- ministrators, board members, teachers, and many other interested, involved personnel. A good year doesn’t just happen. Larry Flanagan completed his first year as su- perintendent; Bill Burrington served as secondary principal and guidance counselor; and Kay Best served as part-time elementary principal and re- medial reading teacher. An end-of-the-year trip to Mis- souri Town brought the 1850’s alive and a visit to the zoo was also very enjoyable. Contests and special events such as Reading Week and Newspaper Week added much to the year’s activities and ex- citement. Good behavior and getting home work done on time was rewarded by accumulating marbles resulting in special ac- tivities such as playing in the snow and a favorite - game af- ternoon. This was a busy year for the Fifth Grade. We took part in Math and Spelling Contests at Brunswick and at Malta Bend, receiving a 3rd place in spelling and 4th and 5th places in math. Malta Bend 4th, 5th, and 6th graders won in the Malta Bend Science Quiz Bowl. Fifth grad- ers received two blue ribbons in the Malta Bend Inter-School Science Fair. We worked on re- search skills in social studies through presidential work- sheets. Field trips included seeing strip mining firsthand, riding the Missouri River Queen River- boat, and visiting Missouri Town and Swope Park Zoo. Three fifth graders were able to attend the Literature Festival at Warrens- burg and meet some of their fa- vorite authors. During Reading Week the Fifth Grade studied favorite fairy tales and began studying po- etry. One of our favorite activi- ties was learning what a panto- mime is by presenting Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to the other grades in pantomime. Other favorite activities included making a Thanksgiving mural for the lunch room and making Christmas wreaths. FOURTH GRADE The Fourth Grade had a busy but fun year of learning. They took a trip to Arrow Rock, rode the Missouri River Queen river- boat, and went roller skating at Christmas time with the fifth and sixth grades. They also took field trips to the Marshall Police Station, Mar-Saline Manor to sing, and Sailor’s Market. Students competed in a Spel- ling Bee, Math Contest, Science Bowl, and Science Fair held at our school. They did well. The year ended with a trip to Glasgow with the third grade where they rode on the ferry and visited two factories. In addition to the play, they participated in the Tiger Paw Race to the library. Besides the regular classroom lessons in the basics, they experienced learning activities in several contests, projects, and field trips. Of particular interest was the field trip near the end of the year when they visited the sleeping bag factory in Glasgow and rode across the Missouri River on the ferry. They lost about 23 teeth this year. Field trips were taken to Mrs. Malter’s farm to ride a combine, Peter's Orchard and Warehouse in Waverly, The Marshall Fire Department, Sailor’s Market, and Jefferson City to tour Scholastic Books and the State Capitol. When they weren't on field trips, they were busy in the classroom. They read many books and won the Tiger Paw Race to the library. Dinosaurs were a hit in January as was Nutrition in March. To learn more about healthy foods, the Second Grade made healthy snacks, stone soup, fruit sal- ad, and a St. Patrick’s Day breakfast. They also en- joyed writing letters to their pen pals in Harvey, North Dakota. When the tiger paws rea- ched from the classroom to the library, they had an ice-cream party. Everyone enjoyed the Pro Kids Program held at school. The First Grade studied a spe- cial unit on fire safety; special activities were done each day for one week. A field trip was taken to both the Marshall and Malta Bend Fire Stations. Mr. McGruff, the crime pre- vention dog, was donated to us by Sue and Rick Williams, the new owners of the grocery store in Malta Bend. McGruff is a pup- pet with a cassette tape teach- ing the kids about various kinds of safety. During the balloon launch near the end of the year, two stu- dents got their cards back — Shawn’s was returned from McGirk, Missouri, and Todd’s, from Houstonia, Missouri. Losing your shoe, your date, or even your contact lens was not unusual. After the maze you were allowed to go to the dance which was in the hay loft. We got down to some HOE-DOWN!!! The queen candidates were let loose to show their construc- tion skills while the king candi- dates were transformed into pastry makers. Lea Carter was crowned queen by last year's king, Mitch Thompson. Her at- tendants were Carol Kiehl and Cheryl Trelow. Paige Schroe- der, last year's queen, crowned Bryan Toliver, the 1986 king. His attendants were John Haley and Joe Miller. The voting was de- cided that night. The FFA did an excellent job of decorating and preparing the maze, while the FHA prepared refreshments such as Puppy Chow” — which was a dog- gone good deal!
