RIGHT: Pia takes her turn at serving the volleyball. 28 PIA AALTO Pia, from Uusikaupunki, Fin- land, was the house guest of Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Burfeind during the school year. Here are some of her thoughts: The first time that she drove through Malta Bend, she felt Uusikaupunki (pop. 15,000) was a really big town; however, after she started to know people, she realized that it doesn’t matter how little the town is, what matters is the people. She enjoyed the many activi- ties at school. The baseball games here are a lot of fun but very different from those in Finland. Marching in a band is never done in Finland so that was a new and special expe- rience. Two other important events, among others, were when she was crowned Barn- warming Queen and when she went on the senior class trip to Florida. When Pia returns home she still has to complete two more years of high school, then on to a tour guide school for another two or three years. Good Luck, Pia! Come back and visit us when you can. STUDENT COUNCIL There are many activities in school that wouldn’t be possi- ble without the Student Coun- cil. Activities sponsored by the Student Council this year were the Volleyball tournament at Christmas time, Spirit Week, Courtwarming activities, and Awards Banquet. The Council also sponsored several skating parties, the Fall Fling in November, a Winter Dance, and a Sweetheart Dance in the spring. The Council worked hard to raise money for these activities. They sold Christmas candy sticks with messages and Spirit Buttons. STUDENT COUNCIL: Sponsor, Janice West; Treasurer, Paige Schroeder; Vice-President, Amy Schroeder; President, June Boedeker; Secretary, Jan Malter. Brian Blackburn, Pia Aalto, Clark Driskell, Timberley O'Bryan, Stacey Kiser, Kris Kersten, Mitch Thompson, Lisa Edde, Lea Anne Carter, Cheryl Trelow, Christine Seckington.
