Tiger Tales 1985 Malta Bend R-5 Malta Bend, Missouri CONGRATULATIONS We dedicate our 1985 Tiger Tales to Mrs. Leila Tomlin who retired this year after seventeen years of service as elementary reading co-ordi- nator. Many students have benefitted from her efforts during these years. On May 22 a faculty carry-in dinner was given in her honor and, at that time, she was awarded a plaque for dedicated service. We wish Mrs. Tomlin many happy years of retirement. SENIOR TRIP Eight senior classmates boarded a plane in Kansas City on Saturday, May 11, with their destination as Orlando, Florida. They were accompanied by chaperones Sandra Harms and Richard Best. For five class members, it was their first flying experience and for three members, it was the first time to see the ocean. Disney World, Epcot Center, Cocoa Beach (on the Atlantic Coast) and Church Street were the main attractions visited. There was something for ever- yone from technology to Micky Mouse to the sun and beach. The five days passed quickly; a fantastic time was had by all. ABOVE: Juniors are watching the Halloween Parade. 16 The Sophomore Class held a Spaghetti Supper in the spring as its money-making project. Although the class is small, with the help of mothers and sponsors it was a profitable supper. Class members enjoyed a pizza after a shopping spree for the supper supplies. Paige Schroeder was chosen for Sophomore Pilgrimage but because of back surgery and a long recuperation at home, she was unable to attend. Carol Kiehl, the alternate selected, attended on April 9. Sophomores initiated into the National Honor Society were Carol Kiehl, Paige Schroeder, Cheryl Trelow, and Jim Weaver. Congratulations to all the Sophomores on a good year. Chinese food, Italian food, slides of Japan, China, and Finland helped make Social Studies more interesting. Areas of circles, triangles, and poly- gons were the most difficult in math. Research papers were at- tempted for the first time in language with very surprising results. A trip to Whiteman Air Force Base ended the year with several new discoveries being made about the U.S. Air Force and the way of life followed by some military personnel. Here are some of her thoughts: The first time that she drove through Malta Bend, she felt Uusikaupunki (pop. 15,000) was a really big town; however, after she started to know people, she realized that it doesn’t matter how little the town is, what matters is the people. She enjoyed the many activi- ties at school. The baseball games here are a lot of fun but very different from those in Finland. Marching in a band is never done in Finland so that was a new and special expe- rience. Two other important events, among others, were when she was crowned Barn- warming Queen and when she went on the senior class trip to Florida. When Pia returns home she still has to complete two more years of high school, then on to a tour guide school for another two or three years. Good Luck, Pia! Come back and visit us when you can. STUDENT COUNCIL There are many activities in school that wouldn’t be possi- ble without the Student Coun- cil. Activities sponsored by the Student Council this year were the Volleyball tournament at Christmas time, Spirit Week, Courtwarming activities, and Awards Banquet. The Council also sponsored several skating parties, the Fall Fling in November, a Winter Dance, and a Sweetheart Dance in the spring. The Council worked hard to raise money for these activities. They sold Christmas candy sticks with messages and Spirit Buttons. For Mark, to everyone, He was one of a kind. Remembering you, Mark, And the way you were, Was a time in our life, That we're happy occurred. For all of us It’s hard to seem, Why this happened It’s not living up to our dreams. Why is he gone? 76 it seems so unfair. The feeling inside us, So empty and bare. At this time of sorrow, It’s easier to say, How much we loved you, Mark, Than in any ordinary day. This time has taught us, To show each how we feel. For now we know, That this life is real. God is carrying us now, And we’ll make it through. He loves us all, me and you Sometimes, someday the pain will end. It will be soaked up By all the memories, Of Mark — Our Friend.
