Over the past 6 years the band has received a total of 160 trophies. Director Mel Blackman commented, This year’s marching season can be summed up by the fact that the members of the Malden High School Band and Colorguard are not only wonderful performers, but very special people.” One of the most memorable events was the trip to St. Petersburg, Florida in April to participate in the Festival of the States where the band represented Massachusetts. Its been a rough season, but overall it’s like we’re pleased with our performances.” Kim Kapralski was quoted as saying. The band had been to many places in the past 6 years, including Florida, Georgia, Virgnia, and Niagara Falls, and they’ve been invited to play in such places as London and Australia. One member summed up her family feelings of her experiences, Being in the band for the past four years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It takes dedication, drive, and talent. For these traits we are rewarded with memories that will last a lifetime.” Bonnie Wayshak, drum major, said, Band has been like a family to me.” 1. They were expected from the start of the season to do poorly because the team consisted of new and inexperienced players. When they were defeated, it was a disappointment for the senior girls who will not have another season. Honors were bestowed on a few players. Although, in the past, there have been problems with not enough runners, this year the numbers reached an all-time low. The boys’ cross country team started out with six runners, and the girls’ team had only three. This started out the season on the wrong foot because a team must have at least five runners to avoid a forfeit. After the girls managed to recruit two more runners, the team was able to win some meets. As usual, at the beginning of the indoor track season, a large group of runners appeared at the practices. However, as the season slowly faded away, so did the runners. At the end of the season, the number of runners at practice averaged at fifteen. Between Junior Varieties, work, and just plain laziness, an estimate of twelve runners i 11 | P r ' seemed to disappear when time for practice came. Coach Carol Gabriella said, It’s not fair to the ones that do show up. The others only want to come to the meets, they don’t want to work.’’ Despite the problems, the teams were grateful for their few victories. I. The highlight of the season was winning the GBL title for the second year in a row at the Thanksgiving Day game against Medford 14-13. Winning the title by defeating Medford was ironic because Medford had been the pre-season pick for the title. The team credited their performance to the strength of their defense. The defense suffered with the loss of senior linebacker Jeff Webb when he broke his ankle during the Arlington game. He recuperated in time to participate in the Thanksgiving Day game. One of the disappointments of the season was the last five games could not be played at MacDonald Stadium because the bleachers had been declared unsafe. It was a let down for the seniors who could not play their last game on their home field. Co-captain Mike Freker said the success of the season and winning the GBL title was owed to the great friendship and determination of the team. He said the best part about being on the team was the memories the will have for the rest of his life. Senior Bob Carroll summed up the season by saying that Beyond all the glittering glory of last year, we just strapped on the gear and got the job done.” 36 FOOTBALL Date Opponent M O 9 16 Melrose 12 14 9 23 Revere 26 0 10 1 Somerville 0 0 10 7 Brookline 26 21 10 15 Arlington 6 6 10 22 Newton North 0 0 10 28 Peabody 28 6 11 4 Quincy 6 18 11 12 Everett 31 16 11 24 Medford 14 13 Won 5 Tied 3 Lost 2 1. For one to truly appreciate the team, he must watch them play. The team had some of the most talented individuals in the G.B.L. such as Mario Fosco and John Barletta who were two of the G.B.L. leading scorers. The team’s endurance and playing ability was as good as any other team in the league. Just about every game played featured low scoring and the games lost were by a small margin. As tri-captain Greg Smith said, It was aggravating to lose by one goal to teams we know we could beat. That has been the story of our season. We kept falling one goal short but one thing I can say for sure is that I’m not disappointed at all. I know we played well and I feel our opponents did too, but in every game there can be only one winner and I have great hopes for the future.” We must still remember that soccer is a young sport in our city. As tri¬ captain Dave Villanucci once said, Soccer is growing rapidly in Malden and I can see a lot of young talent trying out each year. I feel that in the future Malden will by a tourney bound team.” This was not however, the year for Soccer. 40 6 3 kf 27 fr 41 SOCCER Date Opponent M O 9 14 Quincy 1 2 9 16 North Quincy 4 0 9 20 Newton North 0 5 9 22 Cambridge R L 1 7 9 26 Revere 1 2 9 30 Somerville 1 2 10 3 Arlington 1 1 10 5 Peabody 4 1 10 7 Everett 0 2 10 11 Medford 0 1 10 12 Revere 2 3 10 17 Somerville 1 1 10 19 Arlington 0 3 10 21 Peabody 1 1 10 24 Everett 5 0 10 26 Medford 0 2 Won 3 Lost 10 Tied 3 1. The team possessed the ability to do better but they just did not start off the season well. Team members admit they lost a few games they could have won. The team said their greatest strength was their ability to come from behind to win. The team was definitely at it’s best during the third period when they would make their move. Having many talented players like Seniors Adam O’Neil, Robby Hennesy, Lew Barret, and Bobby Carroll helped the team greatly also. One of the highlights of the season was the close game the team played against Cambridge. The team came from behind to win 5-4. Senior Keith Fales said the most important parts of being a member of the hockey team was that he learned discipline and had a lot of good times. Junior Billy McBrine summed up the season by commenting that this team showed the greatest amount of effort and dedication in a long time. A member of the team said that the best summary of the season was the differencet between the team’s league and overall record. Malden had a better overall record than some teams that placed higher in the GBL and should be praised for their performance. 48 hockey WUSk jSmi Date HOCKEY Opponent M 0 12 14 Waltham 3 2 12 17 Quincy 6 3 12 21 No. Quincy 7 6 12 23 Newton North 0 3 12 27 Cambridge 6 2 12 30 Brookline 4 5 1 4 Brockton 4 6 1 8 Somerville 1 3 1 11 Revere 11 3 1 18 Arlington 0 3 1 21 Everett 3 4 1 25 Peabody 5 4 1 28 Medford 5 5 2 1 Somerville 3 6 2 4 Revere 7 0 2 8 Pope John 7 4 2 11 Arlington 1 4 2 14 Everett 4 4 2 17 Peabody 4 2 2 20 Medford 4 2 Won 10 Lost 8 Tied 2 1. With only two losses, to Malden Catholic and a rematch against Melrose, the team’s spirit remained unbroken. Competing at the Sectional Meet at Medford, the Girls’ team lead by their record breaking relay of Julie Dempster, Jessica Gagnon, Kari Edwardsen, and Christiana Dello Russo, took first place and with the Boys taking second. The gymnastics team, plagued with many injuries, competed valiantly and achieved third place in the GBL this season. Many meets were very close but this did not cause the team to lose their spirit, in fact, this only drove them to strive harder. Captains Chrissy Havey, Maria Guiterriez, and Susan Fronduto not only contributed gymnastics skills but also those of Dedication and leadership. Junior Nicole Campbell gave some thoughts on this season. She said, ’’The team worked hard on their own time, all through the summer, attending camp, and going to classes 4 to 5 days a week. One method used is the school newspaper, the Blue and Gold, which informs the high school community of upcoming events and activities. It reports on how each class is doing and profiles outstanding academic and athletic students. Constance Halks, advisor, and the staff created an exemplory paper. Another example is the yearbook, the Maldonian. The ten person staff documented the lives of 1700 students. It took a lot of hard work, but the Maldonian staff pulled together a quality yearbook. Head Editor, Barbara Giltrap, said, It was frustrating trying to meet the deadlines, but working with a supportive crew made it enjoyable.” Photographer, senior, Carrie Borrelli, said, It was great to have a class that I actually enjoyed.” Senior, Gale Sheldon, of the Maldonian summed up the experience by saying, Working on the Maldonian staff is the best example of team work I have ever been part of.
