Also, outside reading and current affairs played a larger role in all classes. The World Problems course dealt mainly with Viet Nam, population problems, labor problems, and other current issues. ln November, the department held a mock elec- tion for the high school and vocational high. In March, the highest scoring students took the National Test sponsored by the Actuaries Club of New York. The Math teachers also attended a three-day lecture series at a Boston meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and were invited to contribute their views on the teaching of math. The view of the department, as reported by Miss Parris, Department Chairman, is that people use math in their lives, and it is hoped that the students of Malden High will also learn to find it enjoyable as well. . .
