Starting the season with five straight wins, the Greenwaves were finally defeated by Senath, the margin being-one point, 22-21. This wasn't regretted so much, however, as Senath won their Regional tournament the past two years and thus re- presented their district at the state. After defeating Clarkton 39-17 in their next game the Greenwaves then dropped into a slump, dropping two of their next three contests, winning from Gideon and losing to Holcomb and Kennett. However, they finished the regular season by winning their next three games. The Green and Gold clad squad finished fourth in the County tournament, beating Clarkton in the first game 42-27, losing in the semi-finals to the strong Senath team 34-32, and then dropping their game for third place honors to the fighting Holcomb Hornets 32-27. Being entered in the Parma subregional tournment, Malden finished second, losing to Holcomb for the third time this season 29-23 in the finals after advancing thus far by defeating Bernie and a very determined and smooth working Clarkton squad. The teams finishing first, second, and third in the subregional were entitled to enter the Dexter Regional Tournament. The Greenwaves defeated Gray Ridge and Dexter in their first two games by identical scores of 31-29. They advanced to the finals with Van Buren for the championship. The first half of the game ended with Van Buren only 4 points ahead. However, in the third quarter the very strong Van Buren Bulldog squad took a big lead which was too much for Malden to overcome despite the fact that Malden doubled them in the last quarter scoring 14 points to the Bulldogs 7. The final score was 33-24. Van Buren thus advanced to the State Tournament to represent this district. The Greenwaves broke two records this year. The top ranking previously was fourth place in the regional, this year second place. This was also the first time Malden had won two trophies for a season. Their final record was 15 won and 7 lost. HBH SQUAD HISTORY The UAH squad did not take all the glory in basketball this year as did the Greenwave HBH squad. They won every one of their games except one, losing it to Dexter in the final game of the season in two overtime periods. The score was 24-22. It hurt them very much to lose this game as they had worked hard all season in achieving their undefeated record. Led by southpaw forward HPetern Benjamin with 92 points for the season the team was very strong scoring 306 points to 209 for the opposition. Following behind Benjamin were NCottonW Williams with 74 and Louis King with 60. Lending very able support were UHippoN Pennington Thomas Cox, WDogn Jones, Jim Roehms, Jim Ellis, and B111 Norrid . , Their final record was 12 won and 1 lost.
