Introduction 3 1 We are on a journey, a journey that has taken us through four years of Malden Catholic edu¬ cation—one that has now released its grasp on us. We stand on our own two feet and must pick up the journey by ourselves. Before us stretches a future of uncertainty. The situation would be particularly frightening were it not that forthe pastfouryears Malden Catholic has been preparing us for this day. At M.C. we were allowed to invest ourselves in the leadership qualities that would enable us to carry on be¬ yond M.C.’s walls. Malden Catholic did not make us dependent upon it; rather, it taught us to be independent of it. This is not to say we were given total freedom. We learned to be held responsible for our actions and to direct those actionsforthe benefit of all. We were taughtthat we are not worlds unto ourselves—we are part of a larger community where our actions affect others. This is the spirit of Plus Ultra: realizing that we are part of a greater world where we have the responsibility to reach out to others. This spirit of service is inseparable from all knowledge gained here. But what also makes M.C. so unique is the people that inhabit the school. It is their friendship -- in addition to the knowledge we gained -- that we are taking with us on our journeys. Kevin Kenney, CFX Mr. Robert Quist Mr. Martin Ammer It ' s like the hand of a deity reaching out of the heavens to aid lowly mortals. The Guid¬ ance Department at Malden Catholic has worked steadfastly to help place approxi¬ mately ninety- six percent of this year’s class in colleges best suited for each individual. Guidance is headed by chairman Mr. Martin Ammer and includes a most dedicated staff, including Brother Kevin Kenney, Mr. Jo¬ seph Lang, Mr. Robert Quist, and the most helpful Mrs. Helen Bockley. Indeed, the whole staff works tirelessly in serving the Malden Catholic community. Of course, this service goes beyond just college placemen t, as can be attested by any incoming fresh¬ man who has benef itted from Brother Kevin’s counsel, wisdom, and memories of Red Sox woe. In today’s unfortunately frantic and competitive academic life, where Bill Cosby’s and Fred McMurray’s aren ' t always present in real life, the guidance department becomes an invaluable help. Led by co-captains Bob Shea(goalie) and Mike Leeman(sweeper, halfback) and under the guidance of coach Steve O ' Neill, they ended with a record of 6-10-1. However, the Lancers lost five games by merely one goal-the catalyst for an extremely exciting but heartbreaking season. Injuries were quite a problem. Junior Kevin Goulding and Senior Sean Gibbons missed a few games each. Junior Jeff Do¬ nahue missed most of the season. Seniors Anthony Forcione, C.J. Murphy, and Junior Dave Dion suffered sprained ankles. Dion was knocked out for most of the season with torn ligaments. Yet, the season definitely did have its highlights. Possibly the biggest was the first varsity game ever on the new Brother Gilbert Stadium with MC dominating Chelsea High with a 3-0 victory. In the come-back of the season, the Lancers knocked off Division III defending State Champion East Boston. Down 3-0 at the half, the team dominated the rest of the game and rallied for four straight goals to win. In another game, at Xaverian, the Lancers fought to a 0-0 tie. In the dead¬ lock, Bob Shea made 15 saves. All-Stars from the team this year were Bob Shea, Mike Leeman, and Sean Gibbons(Catholic Conference). Gibbons also set scoring records with 19 goals and 7 assists and achieved Eastern Mass. All-Star status. 100 Varsity Soccer if? Varsity Hockey As the ' 87- ' 88 Hockey season began, we felt that, at least on paper, we were as good as the ' 84 team that went to the Boston Garden in the State Tourna¬ ment. However, when the sea¬ son finished, we had fallen short of our goals. The team won only six times in twenty games. Yet, we did have the ability to com¬ pete in the Catholic Conference -the most competitive in the state. On occasion, we did well. With victories over BC High, Xaverian, and Don Bosco, we showed that we could compete with the best in the league. The season did have its high points. The team had an improved rec¬ ord over the last few seasons. Michael LoRusso was named a Catholic Conference All-Star; senior goalies Jeff Allen and Todd Ruggiero played excep¬ tionally well. 112 Varsity Hockey Vs. C.M.
