Coming into the year they were touted as being ex¬ plosive on offense, but the defense was a question mark. By the time coach Joe Lang and his players board¬ ed the ferry leaving Thompson’s Island everyone felt the questions were answered. The Lancers proved their ability by beating perennial powerhouse Plymouth-Carver 31-28. The next opponent, Catholic Memorial, again felt the wrath of MC’s offense and defense. This put MC at 2-0. By now the team was on an emo¬ tional high. They came out pumped and dominated a young Don Bosco team 19-0 in a game marred by torren¬ tial downpours. Next on the agenda of victims was St. John’s of Shrewsbury who always seems to play MC tough. The long trek to Shrewsbury didn’t hamper the MC passing attack which again led MC to victory, 19-12. The stats of the Lancers were begin¬ ning to swell. Jim Davis was showing he was one of the top quarterbacks in the state. Jay Symonds was having a banner year as wide receiver. Jay was perfectly complemented on the other end by Jason Gori. MC’s running game was being carried by the powerful up- the-middle running of Kevin McLaughlin. Next, another central Mass, foe, Wachusett Regional High, came into MacDonald stadium and left with the same outcome of all MC’s foes to date. Thoughts of Super Bowl started entering the back of the MC minds. However, Willie Hicks and the Concord-Carlisle Patriots stood in their path. Practice that week was all business. Coach Lang and his assistants had the team primed and ready. The Lancers walked into Con¬ cord and won a closely fought game, 34-28. The players worked extremely hard for that win and were left emo¬ tionally drained. This, combined with Tewksbury’s perfect execution, led to MC’s first defeat at the hands of the Tewksbury Redmen. The Lancers at 6-1 were in perfect position for post-season play, entering three straight Catholic Conference games. The Lancers rebounded from their first loss and beat a tough B.C.high team, 20-15. The Lancers were 7-1 with St. John’s Prep next on the schedule. Injuries and some bad luck cost MC and resulted in a bitter defeat to the boys from Danvers. Malden Catholic was now psyched for the Thanksgiving classic. The team played courageously but came out at the wrong end. The team practiced long and hard and gave its fans lots of joy. This team will always be remembered as winners. 72 LANCERS THRILL THE THRONGS I (Kneeling 1. to r.) J. Gikas, D. Swanson, M. Marchese, A. Ricupero, J. Radzikowski, T. Floramo,). Nickerson, C. J. The team had a disappointing record of 4-12-2, which is misleading because many games were decided by one goal. In the beginning of the season, M.C. got off to a good start with two wins against Chelsea from the G.B.L. It looked as if M.C. would have a winning season, but Catholic Conference play was extreme¬ ly competitive. M.C. won only one Conference game against Catholic Memorial, 3-1; but many games could have gone either way. The best game of the year was a 3-1 loss to St.John’s Prep, in which M.C. held the lead through most of the game. Great defense and great goal keeping by Bob Shea kept M.C. in the game. Two players on the team, Kevin Goulding and Sean Gib¬ bons, were chosen for the Catholic Conference All-Star team. These two players, who will return next year, controll¬ ed M.C.’s offense from the midfield. VARSITY SOCCER 1986 VARSITY SOCCER TEAM (Standing 1. to r.) Coach S. O ' Neill. M. Mini, D. Tenaglia, S. Reppucci 76 A CROSS-COUNTRY TRACK CROSS COUNTRY MAKES GREAT STRIDES This year’s team posted a 1-4 record in the Catholic Con¬ ference, the victory being over Don Bosco at home. A season¬ opening victory over Bedford brought the final record to 2-4. It was MC’s first win in six years of the rivalry. In a post¬ season quad-meet dubbed the First Annual Brother Myles In¬ vitational, the MC harriers defeated Arlington Catholic, Malden, and GBL champs Medford. Seniors Jay Ryan, Gerry O’Brien (co-captains), and Mike Slattery, juniors John Locke and Dave Brown, and sophomores Jerry Bailey, Tim Malloy, and Mike Frechette all held positions in the top seven at some point. The rest of the varsity squad included Steve Wronski, Scott Rigolini, Ben Martignetti, and Mike Dean. The future looks promising with six returning varsity runners. Even the veteran runners experienced something new this season in the post-season meets. In the previous years Malden Catholic had been in Division II because of its size. This year, however, MC made the Division I cutoff. This didn’t stop the team from grab¬ bing some hardware. Medal winners included Jay Ryan, John Locke, Jerry Bailey, Tim Malloy and Mike Frechette. A team in which eight players were returning, the Lancers could only manage a 5-12 season under third-year coach Dennis McHugh. Leading the Lancers were senior co-captains Frank Amato and Chris Dawley. Other seniors included Gary Legor, Steve Batchelder, Tim Cannata, Tom Holmes, and Phil Smith. McHugh looked to the seniors to lead the team in their battles in the tough Catholic Conference. The year started off on a down note. Back-to-back losses to Concord-Carlisle and Malden gave the Lancers their worst start in three years. The third game of the season was a different story though. Losing by 6 with 30 seconds to go, MC came back to beat Saugus in overtime on a Chris Dawley shot at the buzzer. The next win of the year was the biggest win in quite some time. Frank Amato scored 18 to lead MC to a 69-53 win over St. John’s Prep for their first Conference win in three years and their first win over the Prep since 1981-82. In early February this feat was repeated. Gary Legor and Steve Batchelder combined for 12 out of the 15 points in the fourth quarter to beat the Prep, 64-52, com¬ pleting a sweep of the arch- rivals. Frank Amato was selected a Catholic Conference all-star and junior Pat Skerry was chosen as captain for the 1987-88 season. 80 (Kneeling) Co-Captains, F. Amato and C. Dawley; (Standing 1. to r.) G. VARSITY HOCKEY EXPERIENCE WILL TELL Although this year’s varsity hockey season was full of disappointments, the team did give us several exciting games to remember. Three times they played the defending state champs and Catholic Con¬ ference rivals, Catholic Memorial, and three times lost by one goal. “We gave them a great game each time,” Coach Mulloy stated; “we just couldn’t get that extra skate on them.” The year started on a positive note with a jamboree victory against Medford High, the runners-up in last year’s state tournament. Throughout the season the team showed great potential; however, they often played only to the level of the opponent. Some other exciting games included two wins over Don Bosco and a dramatic victory over B.C. High. The team is young and full of great talent. With the ex¬ perience of the upcoming players, the team should show great improvement. Next year MC fans should watch for the great contributions from sophomore Mike Mondello and freshman Keith Tkachuk. The team expresses a great deal of thanks to Jim Davis for his leadership ability as the captain of the team. (Standing, 1. to r.) Coach Mulloy, J. Henaghan, P. Curran, M. Abbott, J. LaFauci, D. The team managed a record of 3-4. They were led by tri-captains Leo Casey, Gerry O’Brien, and Jay Ryan. At the league champion¬ ship, the team had a good show¬ ing. Leo Casey was the league champ in the shot put. Jason Gori took fourth in the 50-yard dash. Tim Scanlon motored to a second in the 300 yd. run. Gerry O’Brien grabbed sixth place in the high hurdles. Sophomore Sal Salamone won the J.V. 600 yd. run and established a new meet record. The big story, however, was the team’s triumph at the State Relay Meet. In the shuttle hurdles, the four-man team of Gerry O’Brien, Carmen DeAngelis, Bob Fallon, and Sal Salamone set the pace by taking second place. The shot put team of Leo Casey, Paul McGuire and John Marchese threw their way to a state title taking first place. Then the sprinters took the stage. The lightning foursome of Jason Gori, Tim Scanlon, Chris Flammia, and Scott DiGiacamo took second in the shuttle dash. For Gori, Scanlon and O’Brien one medal wasn’t enough. They team¬ ed up with Bob Shea to snag se¬ cond place in the 4x200 yd. relay. The team piled up a total of 34 points to take first place out of over thirty teams in Class A and to dethrone defending champions Cambridge Rindge and Latin who could only muster up 33 points. Archrivals Xaverian Brothers High School took third with 22 points. The following weekend the State Class Championship Meet was held at Harvard University. Athletes who placed in the top six in their event qualified for the All-State Meet and a chance to compete with athletes from the whole state. Jay Ryan placed third in the two mile while Leo Casey grabbed sixth in the shot put. INDOOR TRACK (First Row 1. to r.) G. O’Brien, C. DeAngelis, J. Cleary, L. Casey, S. Wronski. S. Rigolini, C. A SWIMMERS EXCEL Once again, the Malden Catholic Swim Team enjoyed an excellent season, capping an overall 6-4-1 dual meet season with a strong showing in the Catholic Conference. They earned a second place finish, both in the league standings (with a 3-2 record) and in the championship meet. The winning tradition of the swimming program continued as the members pulled together to meet the challenge of the toughest schedule the team has ever had. Win, lose, or tie, the team’s exciting performances left a lasting impression of a successful season. Captain Shaun Hubbard’s leader¬ ship and commitment inspired team¬ mates to practice hard and race hard. All five seniors provided depth and versatility to a lineup that featured many personal best performances. Though backstroke was Shaun’s main event, he often competed in the in¬ dividual and relay freestyle events whenever necessary for the good of the team. Mike Flynn consistently scored valuable points while com¬ peting with gutsy determination in 9 of 10 events. Joe Russo frequently placed well swimming at all four freestyle distances as well as the individual medley and butterfly events. Ray Whelan’s steady improvement and solid contributions in the breaststroke events earned him a varsity letter. Kevin Follett’s hard work in the but¬ terfly events paid off well with per¬ sonal best performances and key team points. Perhaps the most impressive in¬ dividual performance was Joe Sheehan’s shattering of the 8 year old 100 yd. breaststroke record by 2 seconds, lowering the mark to 1:06.2. Joe later earned Catholic Conference All-star status in both the breaststroke and the individual medley. Other swimmers scoring well and earning varsity letters were juniors Matt Stodolnic, Dave Ammer, Derek Howe, sophomores Matt Lowery, Kevin Lucia, Pat Joyce, Jeff Donahue, Tim Ammer, Bill Potter, and freshman Mike Montecalvo. Everyone will long remember the team’s dramatic come-from-behind victory over Catholic Memorial by winning the final event of the meet. M.C. swimmers raced their hearts to the maximum in a tough loss to powerhouse Brookline. No one will ever forget the rare, remarkable tie with rival Melrose. With such out¬ standing and thrilling team and in¬ dividual achievements, the M.C. swimmers always displayed great spirit and skill. We all share in the pride of a job well done. Congratulations! Abate VARSITY BASEBALL MC BATMEN QUALIFY FOR STATES For the first time since 1983, the varsity baseball team qualified this year for the MIAA State Baseball Tourna¬ ment. However, the season finally ended in disappoint¬ ment, as the team lost 8-7 to Medford High in the first round. As in so many other games of this 1987 season, the Lancers were forced to claw back from a deficit. They fought back with three runs in the final inning to put a scare into their opponents before leaving the tying run on se¬ cond base. The season was full of ex¬ citement as the Lancers finish¬ ed second in the Catholic Con¬ ference with a 9-6 record. MC victories included Don Bosco (2), Catholic Memorial (2), B.C. High (2), St. John’s Prep (1), and Xaverian (2). The team also defeated highly ranked Norwood in a non-league game. The most impressive victory of the year occurred on prom day — the Lancers rallied from a four run deficit in the final inning against B.C. High to overtake the Eaglets, 5-4. All four runs scored after the B.C. catcher dropped the third strike of what would have been the final out of the game. Finally, four Lancers were chosen for the Catholic Con¬ ference All-Star team. These included seniors Jim Downing (for the second year), Jim Davis, and Kevin Shea, and junior Chuck LaRosa. Con¬ gratulations to all members of the 1987 baseball team for a fine season! A ! 89 MC CHRISTENS NEW TRACK The outdoor track team finished its dual season with a record of 2-3 after being plagued by heavy spring rains. The rescheduling of rained-out meets caused a hectic conclusion to the season, in¬ cluding three meets in five days. Malden Catholic had victories over Don Bosco and Catholic Memorial while losing to Xaverian, St. John’s Prep, ana B.C. High. At the State Relay Meet two M.C. relay teams placed. The distance medley team consisting of Jay Ryan, John Locke, Gerry O’Brien, and Tim Malloy placed sixth. The 4x110 relay team also placed sixth. Kevin McLaughlin, Chris Flammia, Tim Scanlan, and John Pippy made up the team. Gerry O’Brien had an outstand¬ ing season. In every dual meet he competed in three events; triple jump, high hurdles, and the 300 meter intermediate hurdles. The team could always look to Gerry for a plethora of points. O’Brien’s young counterpart, Sal Salamone, was right behind in both hurdle races, and the two traded the lead in the triple jump. Scanlan owned the sprints for M.C. He was the fastest in the 100 and 200 meters. Jason Gori and Chris Flammia traded running second to Scanlan in the 100. Gori was also successful in the long jump. He progressed steadily over the season finishing up with a jump of 18 ' 6 . Garfield Jones and Kevin McLaughlin were the point getters in tne 200m besides Scanlan. Leo Casey was the big gun in the weight events. He placed in the shot put and discus in every meet. In tne shot he had five firsts. John Marchese was also strong, often complementing Casey’s first with a second. Mike Brady and John Pippy were the story in the javelin. They exchanged places as team leader. In the distance events Jay Ryan was the man. He had firsts in the half-mile, the mile, and the two mile; he had the team’s fastest times in all three events. The team especially enjoyed hosting each of its dual meets on our beautiful new track and field facility. Special thanks go to Bro. The team’s final season record was a deceiving 3-9. With an unusual top seven including five freshmen and sophomores, the team was short on experience. However, what the team lacked in ex¬ perience, they made up in great play. Under the leader¬ ship of first-year coach Mrs. Nancy Cook and team tri- captains Peter DiGiovanni, Kevin Duggan, and Carlos Montejo, the team had many close and exciting matches. The team got its first taste of victory with great wins over Catholic Memorial and Austin Prep. The consistent play of all top seven players as well as the continued support of the en¬ tire team was extremely en¬ couraging. Both Mrs. Cook and her returning players are cer¬ tain that next year’s season will be even more challenging and exciting. 92 (Left to right) J. Cronin, K. Cox, K. Lucia, J. O’Donnell, K. Duggan, K. This mark is misleading, however, since the squad — which is loaded with young talent — played admirably in many matches, but was outmatched by such powerhouses at St. John’s Prep and B.C. High. The highlights of the season included a 7.5 to 4.5 victory over a worthy Xaverian High School and a 6 to 6 tie against this same team. The team was led by junior Mark Abbott, who was named a Catholic Conference All-Star, and senior Rich Grasso, both of whom competed against the top golfers of the Catholic Con¬ ference. Sophomores Dan McGrath, Billy Cunningham, Dan McGonagle and junior Mike Manfra were also high scorers. While the team as a whole did not qualify for the state tourney, the team was represented by senior Rich Grasso, junior Mark Abbott, and sophomore Dan McGrath in the state individual com¬ petition. Coach Barry Haley predicts only good things for the future of the team. The team is losing only one senior, Rich Grasso, to graduation and is loaded with promising underclassmen. Freshman Jack Curran, and sophomores Mike Mini and Billy Cunn¬ ingham can only improve and lead this team to future suc¬ cess. The future looks bright for M.C. golf! 94 MHK (Back row 1. to r.) Since many of the team members were new to the game, the team started slowly, building individual skills and a con¬ cept of team play. Nonetheless, by season’s end they had defeated the Xaverian Hawks twice an d finished with wins in their last two games. Coach Cerretani applauded the pro¬ gress made by all of his players and made special note of the outstanding contribution of center midfielder Frank Rizza. HOCKEY PROGRESSES The J.V. hockey team exceeded the expectations of many to become one of the most improved teams at Malden Catholic. They finished the season with a record of 5-9-0 in the Catholic Con¬ ference, and 15-13-1 overall. Coach Ted Gibson took this team composed entirely of sophomores except for several juniors, and turned them into a team that was a contender in every game they played this year. Because of a discouraging year for MC’s varsity squad, Coach Mulloy and Coach Gibson did some shifting of players, trying out some J.V. skaters at varsity positions. Although some players were unable to remain with the varsity all year, they were able to accumulate some impressive stats at J.V. games. Jamie O’Neill came through with an excellent season and saw varsity action by the season’s end. Scott Giordano, one of the three juniors, had a tremen¬ dous season and also saw much action with the varsity. Other per¬ formers who shone this season were Kevin Faller, Sean O’Driscoll, and Mike Lilly, the team’s sophomore goalie. The team was able to make every game exciting, but none more than their 5-4 squeaker against the Prep. After a long tough game with the score seesawing back and forth, MC saw the score tied at 4 with less than a minute remaining. Scott Giordano took a pass from Kevin Faller and blew it by the Prep goalie with :07 seconds left to boost MC to a 5-4 win and recognition as a con¬ tender in the Catholic Conference. This season was not a fluke! Next year the entire team except the juniors will be able to return. The “experienced” JV squad will look forward to another perfor¬ mance worth celebrating. Other outstanding players included defensemen David Pappalardo and Wayne Smith and forwards David Kelley, John Pagliuca, and Frank Schifano. When asked about the most exciting contests of the season, Coach Cavanaugh cited the season series with B.C. High in which M.C. skaters earned the better end of a 2-1-1 record. The high point of the year, however, had to be the 6-0 rout of archrival St. John’s Prep. We look forward to even great achievements from this group in the future! JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALL J.V. BASEBALL CAPTURES TITLE After getting off to a mediocre 2-2 start, the 1987 Junior Varsity Baseball Team rallied to finish on top of the Catholic Conference with a record of 9 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie. The team also averaged over 16 runs per game on their way to first place honors. The JV baseball success can be at¬ tributed to many strong offensive per¬ formances. Led by Billy O’Brien’s .714 batting average, the JV Lancers com¬ piled a team batting average of over .400 and hit with power. A season highlight was a 7 homerun showing in their final game with Don Bosco. In addition to outscoring their op¬ ponents, the Lancer defensive effort held opposing teams in check by play¬ ing virtually errorless baseball. Also, the pitching staff of Billy O’Brien, Billy Brady, Dave Dion, and Keith Fitz¬ gerald did its share by keeping oppos¬ ing hitters off the basepaths by averag¬ ing over seven strikeouts per game with a team high of 13 by Dave Dion vs. CM. When opposing players did reach base safely, many were gunned down by catchers Tommy Carlton and Mike DeMaro. In 1987 the JV Baseball Lancers showed exceptional potential, spirit, and promise for the future. The players exhibited excellent team and individual performances which should benefit the MC baseball pro¬ gram in years to come. (Standing 1. to r.) T. Carlton, T. Floramo, T. Ricupero, B. Steve Wronski, president of the chapter, welcomed the inductees and their families. In addition, remarks were made on the four attributes of a society member by Pat Donovan, Mike Slattery, Scott Rigolini, and Michael Russo. Mike Russo served as Vice President of the chapter, with Mike Slattery handling both jobs of Secretary and Treasurer. The induction ceremonies continued after the opening remarks with Joshua Perlman and Edward Hunt an¬ nouncing the names of the inductees as well as including a short biography for each member. There were also several smaller trips to cabins and condos owned by club members’ families. All in all, it was a successful season and fun was had by all. Think Snow! The question is: “Did he jump or was he pushed?” This question and many others were answered in the drama club’s suspense-filled presentation of Ayn Rand’s three-act play “The Night of January 16th.” Using Malden Catholic’s Hayes Theatre as the courtroom, and picking the witnesses and jury members out of the crowd, the cast had the au¬ dience laughing and on the edge of their seats for both nights of the performance. Along with the play, the Drama Club also competed in the Boston Globe Massachusetts Drama Festival on March 6 at Duxbury H.S. with five other high schools: Wellesley, Duxbury, Nazareth, Marlboro, and Marshfield. The club, whose intent was to provide a visual record of the school year, con¬ tinued to grow and prosper during 1986-87. Theirs was no small task considering the number of events taking place at M.C. on any given day. For every dance, athletic event and school mass, moderator Bro. Joe Britt had to make sure a representative of the camera club was there to record it. For proof of their prolific work one need on¬ ly observe the many wall displays that adorn our cor¬ ridors throughout the school year. The yearbook staff is especially grateful to the members of the club who pro¬ vided most of the pictures for the Lance. LANCE 1987 (Standing 1. to r.) Bro. Frederick Eid, J. Welch, J. Winter, L. Led by the editorial staff of Peter Cannon, Bob Reardon, Ray Whelan and Stephan Wronski, this year’s staff was comprised of students spanning grades 9 through 12. A large turnout of seniors gave the book its distinctive 1987 flavor. Much credit is due to the yearbook moderators Mr. Bill Flynn and Bro Fred Eid. Through many hours of work — planning, organizing, teaching, coaxing, and checking, these two men really made the yearbook gel. Finally, one cannot overlook the outstanding efforts of the juniors on the staff. After the seniors graduated they gave the book that final push it needed in order to have it published on time. The participation by such a large number of students has helped make this yearbook a great one. We hope that next year’s seniors will pass their knowledge on to the juniors and likewise the juniors to sophomores, thus making the Lance greater with every coming year. 124 LANCC J 1 125 FRENCH CLUB The French Club, now in its fourth year, focused its energies upon the successful France trip. Under the moderation of Mrs. Cam¬ pion, the French Club, along with the other language clubs, conducted the ever popular Cafe International at the M.C. Open House. The French Club also had a hand in bringing about the Fiesta Day, where foreign foods and customs were experienced by students. Future plans of the club include dining in the Boston area’s finer French restaurants and taking in a French film or two. Au Revoir! (Standing 1. to r.) TRAVELS TO FRANCE SPRINGTIME IN PARIS An enthusiastic group of M.C. students traveled to the pictureque countryside of France during April vacation. After Anjers the group visited the fortified seaport city of St. Malo, and Mont St. Michel in Normandy. From here they journeyed south to the “City of Lights,’’ Paris. The students saw Paris from the dizzying heights of the Eiffel Tower to the depths of the Metro. They visited the Louvre to see its many world famous masterpieces such as the “Mona Lisa.” Also during their Paris stay, they went to the Cathedral of Notre Dame and the Arc de Triomphe, and sipped cokes at the quaint streetside cafes. Upon leaving Paris the group traveled to the Chateau region. Here they saw Chenonceau and the Cathedral at Chartres, and with the help of their bus driver, “Psycho” Saco, they made their way safely home. The 21 boys who went and the three chaperones, Mr. and Mrs. Campion and Ms. Roberts, all had an en¬ joyable vacation. ENGLAND TRIP (Rear 1. to r.) M. Borghetti, J. Lacey, D. Huberman, Bro. Funiciello LANCERS VISIT LONDON On Friday, February 13, 1987, a group of nine Malden Catholic juniors and seniors departed Boston with Mr. Markey and Bro. Field, bound for London, England. The ten da} trip consisted of visits to such highlights as Westminster Abbey, London Bridge, Stonehenge, Windsor Castle, and Stratford on Avon. They were awestruck at the grandeur of the friendly country, as well as embarrassed by their inability to communicate in this land’s foreign tongue. On February 27 these men reluctantly returned tired, hungry, poor, and enriched. CLOSE-UP MC VISITS DC In the spring of 1987 nine Malden Catholic students ventured to Washington to participate in the Close Up program. Mr. Thomas Arria, the teacher advisor, also took part in a similar program for teachers. Close Up is an intense, week-long program of exploring the federal government, being a part of the insider political scene in our nation’s capitol, and sharing this experience with students from around the country. Close Up gives the student an opportunity to share ideas and opinions on political, social, and economic issues with students and teachers representing all different parts of our nation. The diversity among the participants gives students the opportunity to share many differing views and their rationales. The most rewarding aspects for everyone, however, were friendships made and the good times had with the people in¬ volved. Participants debated, discussed, and were challenged to think; above all, however, they saw great things, met great peo¬ ple, and had one great time! BIG BROTHERS BIG BROTHERS GUIDE FROSH Each year as a new group of freshmen prepares to enter the Malden Catholic com¬ munity, the Big Brothers are there to support them academically and socially. Starting with the Freshman Orientation, the Big Brothers begin introducing the freshmen to a new stage in their lives. Following their Big Brothers’ guidance, freshmen begin to involve themselves in clubs, athletics, and other social activities. As freshmen mature, the Big Brothers’ im¬ portance grows due to the interpersonal rela¬ tionships that they have developed with the freshmen. At activities such as school dances and sporting events, freshmen normally find it easier to fit in when they can talk to a Big Brother. The Big Brothers are assisted by the moderators of the student council, Mr. Buc- chino and Ms. Johnson. The seniors who par¬ ticipate in the Big Brothers gain leadership skills and the friendships of the young freshmen; their experience in the program helps them grow as much as the freshmen whom they help. 130 i RACQUETBALL CLUB SOME MEMBERS (Standing 1. to r.) On Thursday afternoons one could find all those who relish the game of rac¬ quetball waiting patiently in room 209 for a ride to the Winchester Racquetball Club. The year was highlighted by a tournament composed of two divisions. The first division was won by Jeff Paler¬ mo, Andy Brengola got second, third was Rick Fallon and finally, Mr. P. took a gracious fourth. In the second division Mike Martone captured first, and Mike Bennett took second. A good time was had by all. 131 ■■1 STUDENT COUNCIL President Scott Rigolini Vice President Jim Downing Treasurer Carmen D’Angelis Secretary Jim Welch Junior Councilor Matt Melillo Sophomore Councilor Kevin Goulding Athletic Chairman Jay Ryan Cultural Chairman Michael Slattery Publicity Chairman Michael Barton Religious Chairman Gerry O’Brien Social Chairman Steve Patrie Moderators Ms. Christine Johnson Mr. Robert Bucchino 132 I L } , 1 ffsilii V rl • JH f s STUDENT COUNCIL PROVIDES DYNAMIC LEADERSHIP The Malden Catholic 1986-87 Student Council did a great job for the school and the student body this year. Led by president Scott Rigolini, the council put forth great efforts in all event s. The student council organized and led the productions of Freshman Orientation and Open House. This year’s dances were primarily run by the social committee headed by Steve Patrie. All of the dances were successful. Along with helping the social committee, the student council hooked up with the cultural committee to run the blood drives. The religious committee, led by Gerry O’Brien, organized the school masses and the Hunger Awareness Program. The publicity committee did a great job promoting all the sporting events and dances. The intramural program was run by the athletic committee with the help of Mr. Tom Arria. We thank the student council and the commit¬ tees for the great efforts put forth this year. Special thanks go to moderators Ms. Christine Johnson and Mr. Robert Bucchino. Great job! CHESS TEAM RETAINS LEAGUE TITLE For the past two years now, the Malden Catholic Chess Team has proved itself a force to be reckoned with in the North Shore Interscholastic Chess League. The team, coached by Ms. Martha McGuane, won the league for the second year in a row with a record of eight wins, one loss, and eight ties. Led by the experience of seniors Pat Donovan (1st board) and Rick Fallon (2nd board), the A-team also con¬ sisted of juniors Olivier Kozlowski (3rd board), Bob Fallon (4th board), and Mike Leahy (5th board). The B-team, whose record was five wins and five losses, con¬ sisted of Terry Quinn, Chris Shea, Mike Aloise, Mike Polcaro, and Nilesh Gandhi. The team defended its title by first beating Peabody in the semi-finals and then defeating Medford in the fina ls. (Standing 1. to r.) The competition was touted as “a test of academic strength” and tested students’ knowledge of various subject matters such as mathematics, chemistry, fine arts, English literature and a super quiz on the Constitution of the United States. The team consisted of several juniors and seniors, each being either an “A,” “B,” or “C” student who would compete with other students in his category. The team had many after school meetings prior to the competition, and with the assistance, of several faculty members, reviewed the material that was to be tested. M.C.’s young team competed well, but narrowl missed qualifying through to the state finals. 134 TABLE HOCKEY CLUB One of the hottest clubs around, the table hockey club, got off to a roaring start this year with a large membership. They also went to the McFadden Memorial Manor Nursing Home in Malden to visit the elderly. Twice a month the members of the club worked at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church feeding the hungry. The highlight of the year oc¬ curred in May when over 30 M.C. students helped to run the Senior Olympics at the McFad¬ den Nursing Home. Special thanks to all who helped make this year a success. These trips were taken to hear lectures on various science-related topics as a part of the The Science Frontiers Exhibits. One of the lectures given was on chemical warfare and another on the mountain gorillas of Africa. Along with sitting in on the lec¬ tures, the members also toured the museum and looked at some of the in¬ teresting exhibits such as the Robot Ex¬ hibit and the Dinosaur Exhibit. The moderators, Mr. Alan Kaufman and Mr. Frank Halas, are hoping for an even greater turnout next year. OPEN HOUSE 19th ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE HELD On November 2nd, 1986, Malden Catholic opened its doors yet again to display the treasures that M.C. contains. Like its 18 predecessors this open house was a tremendous success. Chaired by senior Stephan Wronski and his assistant, junior Andrew Sarno, the Open House com¬ mittee did a superb job in directing a day in which over 1000 people got an inside look at the school. Students from all four classes, including an exceptional turnout from the senior class led by Joe Lacey and Frank VanGorder, acted as tour guides. Each fami¬ ly received its own personal guide. Other students displayed techniques used in lab study, participated in sports demonstra¬ tions, and represented the many activities available at M.C. The dedicated faculty and administration explained the academic pro¬ grams that the institution offers. The events of the day were a tremendous success and no doubt will attract a great incoming class of 1991. 139 I CARDINAL VISITS MC On Monday morning, October 6, 1986, His Eminence, Bernard Cardinal Law, Archbishop of Boston, made his first pastoral visit to Malden Catholic. The Cardinal was assisted by Father Fred Ryan (MC ’56), Vice-Chancellor of the Archdiocese and master of ceremonies for our celebration of Mass in honor of the Holy Spirit. Our entire school community assembled in the gym for this historic occasion. Concelebrating the Mass with the Cardinal were Father Mar¬ tin Walsh, our Chaplain, Father John Daley, Pastor of St. Joseph in Malden, Father Francis Garrity, Pastor of St. Francis Parish in Medford, Father Arnold Colletti, Pastor of Immaculate Concep¬ tion Parish in Malden (the original home of “Boys’ Catholic”), and Father Leonard Burke, Pastor of Our Lady’s Parish in Waltham. Deacon of the Mass was Father Walsh’s father, Reverend Mr. Martin Walsh of St. Ann’s Parish, South Peabody. In addition, at least 65 members of the administration, faculty, staff, and student body fulfilled the diverse ministries of the celebration. The highlights of the day included the warm welcome extend¬ ed to His Eminence by our new Headmaster, Bro. Robert Sullivan, and the presentation of an M.C. sweater to the Cardinal by Student Council President, Scott Rigolini. Also, the Cardinal visited informally with the students, many of whom tried on his mitre for size. For most of us, however, the most appreciated highlight of the Cardinal’s visit was his suggestion for the grant¬ ing of a school holiday. After a brief visit with the resident Brothers Community, many of whom are now retired, the Cardinal left M.C. to return to his residence and continue his hectic schedule. All in all, it was a wonderful day! 1 Ecce Sacerdos Magnus 141 SENIOR RETREAT The weekend of March 13-15 was a special one for those seniors who participated in the Senior Retreat held at the Julie Center of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in Ipswich. This par¬ ticular event stressed the talents of the seniors who looked towards their goals and their future. Cuisine was provided by Sister Maureen, who volunteered her services for the occasion. The occasion was also marked by a visit to the Center’s farm which featured a recently born goat. 142 SOPHOMORE DAYS II i j l I March 31st and April 2nd were given over to a pair of special days for the sophomores. The tenth graders were split into two sections. One group was ferried by school bus to St. Joseph’s Church in Maplewood Square, Malden, for a retreat day con¬ ducted by over twenty seniors who made presentations and guided some ninety sophomores in discussion groups on both occasions. Sharing their experiences with the sophomores were seniors like Steve Batchelder who acted as the MC for the two days. Talks were presented by Frank VanGorder, Mike Slattery, Brian Frost, and Jim Welch. The other half of the class was treated to a special all-day session with staff members from St. Margaret’s Hospital, who presented their program on sexuality. This pro¬ gram was presented in the school library. 143 BROTHER GILBERT WALK-A-THONS: April 13,1986 November 16,1986 GROUND-BREAKING: June 3,1986 J STADIUM SHAPES UP !
