Coach Lang and the Captains 76 The Defense Rests The football team had a strong 6-3 record, despite the fact that they had only five returning lettermen. The defense was MC ' s strong suit all year, allowing no first quarter points and only 22 first half points all season. The starters on this squad were linemen Sean McLaughlin, John Lava, Tony Natola, and Dave Morrison, linebackers Brian Dembicki, John Leete, and backs Tom Walsh, Jim Casamento, Jeff Floramo, and Gene Alston. Leete led the team in tackles with Lava and Notola close behind. The offense also came through with big plays throughout the season, winning two games in the last eight seconds and a third in the last thirty seconds. Starters on this squad in¬ cluded ends Bryan Stack, and Jon Symonds, linemen Tony Natola, Bobby Marques, John Ferraro, Brian Dembicki, and John Leete, and backs Tim Galvin, Gene Alston, Brian Jones and Gary Giordano. Alston rushed for better than 100 yards a game and led the Catholic Conference in scoring with 77 points. The highlight of the season was a 13-8 victory over St. John ' s Prep who had beaten MC 14 games in a row going in¬ to the contest. The key to the game was two big goal line stands by the stingy MC defense, the second coming with three minutes to go in the game and MC down 8-7. The of¬ fense then marched 99 yards downfield and scored on a pass from Giordano to Symonds with just eight seconds left in the game. Other highlights included: — Three goal line stands against Matignon. — A 25 yard pass from Giordano to Symonds with six seconds left to beat St. John ' s Shrewsbury. — Tony Natola ' s return of a John Lava blocked punt for a touchdown against Don Bosco. 1983 MC Varsity Scores MC.6 Matignon.0 MC.18 Don Bosco.6 MC.13 St. John ' s Shrewsbury.8 MC ,.13 Catholic Memorial .9 MC.6 Concord-Carlisle.7 MC.14 Austin Prep.i.. 6 MC.8 BC High ..14 H MC.13 St. John ' s Prep.8 MC.12 Xaverian.28 ' ■ . - ■ ; ■ i al , x I Jb lg|pF m J ASS — Gene Alston ' s 237 yard game against Austin Prep which earned him Boston Globe player of the week honors. — The stellar play of our four all-stars: John Leete, John Lava, Tony Natola and Gene Alston. 77 The swarming defense Bobby Marques lends a hand. This year ' s M.C. Soccer Team was a much improved unit over years past. Led by new head coach Bro. John Sullivan, and captains Danny Lawler, Bobby MacCallum and Robby Norton, the team stayed alive with dreams of the tournament right up to the final week of the season. With Coach Sullivan ' s leadership and the efforts of returning All-Stars Greg Polaski and Frank Capone as well as the outstanding goaltending of Bobby Santo, this team is almost a guarantee for post-season play in 1984. The leading scorers on this year ' s team were Frank Capone and Steve Pastorello. 80 1st Row, L-R: Paul Bono, Steve Garten, Frank Dewey, Joe Sullivan, Mauro DeMaso, Chris Doucot, Chuck Coleridge, Brian McCarthy, Stephan Wron- ski, Joe Lociatto, Mike Dunn, Sean Sullivan. 2nd Row, L-R: John Cameron, Leo Sullivan, Kevin Boudreau, Greg Foley, Sean Coakley, Marc Rabideau, Mike Drummey, Andy Lucia, Sam Steed. 3rd Row, L-R: Head Coach Bro. Myles McManus and Bro. Dan Cremin. Led by co-captains Thomas Rosato and John Wronski, and seniors John Erickson, Tim Leonard, and Kevin McGovern, the team went on to compile a 2-5 record in a season that was more successful than the record alone can attest. Facing stiff competition in the tough Catholic Conference, the team performed well all season, turning in many ex¬ cellent individual performances. Tim Leonard; juniors Sean Burke, Jim Donovan, and Dan Harvey; and sophomores Dave Brady, Jim Davis, Joe Gallo, Chris Hart, Mike Hegarty, and Marc Rabideau consistently finished well in the varsity race. Several of the sophomores garnered medals in the state meets and Burke was named to the Catholic Conference All-Star roster. With an abundance of young talent, MC cross country looks forward to a promising future. 83 mm iMte; £k Basketball The 1983-4 Malden Catholic Varsity Basketball team had an off year. The team ' s overall record was 5-15 and 3-11 in the tough Catholic Conference. The team was led by captains Jay Caton and Gary Giordano. Caton was the leading scorer, averaging 13 points per game. Forward Bob Rivers was the second leading scorer with an average of 10 points per game. The highlight of the season was a 64-57 victory over Dom Savio. MC held league-leading scorer Bob Sullivan to only 8 points. Despite its poor record, the team stayed close in most games, losing several of them in the last minute or in overtime. Coach Tom Arria did a good job keeping the team together despite being handicapped by several off-court controversies. The coach is looking forward to next year ' s squad which should be considerably bet¬ ter. Team members included Charlie Obremski, John Kostro, Joe Lusk, Jay Erickson, Joe Puleo, Larry Gamst, Greg Carter, Jon Symonds, Bob Cooper, Gene Alston, Bob Rivers, Jay Caton and Gary Giordano. 86 John Kostro drives against Malden Jay Caton looks for an open man Take that Chenault Joe Puleo grabs a board 87 Charlie Obremski, John Kostro, Gene Alston, Joe Puleo, Greg Carter, Jon Sumonds, Bob Rivers, Larry Gamst, Bob Cooper, John Erickson, Joe Lusk, Mr. Tom Arria, Co-Capt. Under the leader¬ ship of Bro. Myles McManus and coaches Lou Ruggerio and Bro. John Sullivan, each team member demonstrated improvement and some individuals turned in impressive per¬ formances in both dual and state meets. The team ' s strong suit was the field events, where captains Andy Fronczak and Tony Natola dominated the league ' s throwing events. Both Fronc¬ zak and Natola won medals in the state meet. Sean Randall and Paul Cardarelli, both juniors, provided a spark in the jumping events and the javelin, respectively. Sean Burke, a junior, led a field of MC distance runners showing great potential for future seasons. Hurdlers and sprinters were led by Sean Randall, captain Dave Tringale, John Han¬ nah ury, and freshman Carmen DeAngelis. MC Track was basically a young team with most of its talent returning next season. However, the team will be depleted by the loss of seniors Andy Fronczak, Tony Natola, John Wronski, Tom Rosato, Anthony Fortunato, and Joe Marchant. Runners take your mark! Seniors John Costro, Dan Lawler, Charlie Obremski, Tony D ' Aurora and Tim Leonard; and Juniors Dan Williamson, Kevin Hern, and Joe Jones also spoke.
