The program was well received by the twenty-one seniors who participated fully in the week’s activities. The purpose of the Leadership Institute is twofold: to assist you in becoming an effective leader by more fully realiz¬ ing our leadership potential, and develop a care group of seniors to assist Malden Catholic in carrying out its philosophy as a Christian school. The Institute was to develop the leadership abilities of the seniors and to prepare for Freshman Orientation and many other school activities during the coming year which would involve service and sharing of one’s gifts and talents. The Pastoral Ministry Team hopes to do its part as it cooperates with the rest of the faculty and staff in providing more oppor¬ tunities to further develop the spirit of Malden Catholic. “Huey, Dewey, and Louie?” “So what do we say next?” Brother Love and Brother Paul 68 “We’re ready to take the plunge!” Harry Benzan and John Pinette on stage “Take me to the river...” “Who’s the kid with the tan?” Top Row, L-R: Jim Kostro, Eric McHatton, Bro. In addition, they provided photos for the Cardinals visit and the 50th anniversary dance. The 1982-83 officers were President Anzouni, Vice President Ron Whelan, and Secretary Tony D’Alba. Music Ensemble The Malden Catholic Musical Ensemble was organized this fall and in only a few short months had gained positive recogni¬ tion and provided enjoyment for its members and the student body alike. The group was instrumental in increasing school spirit by entertaining at athletic events, pep rallies, and playing at special school masses. Published five times during the year, the ten-page newspaper kept students informed and amused with its combination of feature stories, sports news, band reviews, club notes, Senior Spotlight, Editorials, Trivia and Satire. Distributed free of charge to the MC community and to friends and family at Open House, the Crystal 99 remains a cornerstone of student media in the school. die 99 1st Row: Co Editors Andy Scully, Tom Gill; Greg Dooiing, Paul Blakiewicz, Mike Keegan, Jim Flanagan, Brian Heffren. 2nd Row: Staff Moderator Mr. Markey, Matt Angelli, Jim Butler, Jason Cleary, Tim Rac- zowski, Richard Muse, Larry Murray, Bruce Martel. “Headlines!” Debate The success of the Malden Catholic debate team can truly be attributed to the great efforts put forth by each of the debaters this year. These students spent hours resear¬ ching topics and preparing arguments for upcoming com¬ petition against other high schools. The newest addition to the debate team was coach Dr. Charles Brown. His vast knowledge of foreign policy and his unending dedication to the team proved him to be a significant asset to M.C. M.C. had its most successful debate season this year. The team record was 16-8, but the team never lost more than half of its rounds at any given tournament. The team traveled to Maine, New York, Pennsylvania and to many tournaments in Massachusetts. The varsity team consisted of Seniors Doug Howard (President) and Bruce Martel (Vice-President). Other debaters were: Senior, Jason Cleary; Junior, Mike O’Con- nel; and Freshmen, John Montminy and Charles Mohoney. The team worked very hard this season, and we hope that debate will continue to be the meaningful and rewar¬ ding experience (that it is now) in years to come. Good luck! “Doug Howard, Jason Cleary, Mike O ' Connell, Mike Markeane, Bruce Martel” “Bruce Martel giving assignments.” 71 Math Team The Math Team, under the guidance of Bro. Fred Eid, had a very competitive season, participating in both the Greater Boston and the New England Mathematics Leagues. Brother Eid has maintained a rigorous practice and preparation pro¬ gram, to which the team owes much of its success. The performances of the younger team members ensure the team’s success for next year. The team, made up of en¬ tirely new members, was also the first team this year to gain over 1000 points in one round, unseating the favored team in doing so. The team consisted of Alex Kim, Jason Cleary, Tim Raczkowski, and alternates Doug Howard, Rich Wronski, Ronald Whelan, Bill O’Connell, Carl Lipani, and Marty Loyola. Publicity Committee This year the Malden Catholic Student Council added a new committee to its board. The Publicity Committee, under the chairmanship of senior Dave Walsh, organized and distributed posters, leaflets, and other forms of publicity in order to promote the various activities throughout the year such as sporting events and dances. The committee, though small in membership, hopefully will increase as the years go on. As Chairman Walsh says, “The Publicity Committee is an extremely important part of the school community. It instills spirit into students to go out and support the various activities.” 73 The Social Committee for the 1982-1983 school year was chaired by Harry Bonzan. The Social Committee was involved in successful school dances and a very elegant prom. One dance even raised $1500 for the Stu¬ dent Council Treasury. The Social Committee, in conjunction with the Prom Committee, has planned a very special evening on April 29, 1983 — the Pro¬ menade at the Palace in Saugus, Massachusetts. Social Committee Athletic Committee Racquetball Club The Racquetball Club is now in its second year and is going strong with Mr. Kennedy again as moderator. The club continues to play every Tuesday and Thursday at the Winchester Racquetball Club. Over the years, THE PIT has been a haven for cigarette smokers as well as a place to escape the boredom of the usual school day. This, as we have been informed, is to be the last year of the Pit’s use. The pur¬ pose of the club is to teach students the skills of program¬ ming and to learn more about the machines that are becoming increasingly important in our lives. During the year, student-taught computer courses were conducted to instruct members in the BASIC program¬ ming language. Other club activities included field trips to the Northeast Computer Show and the Digital Computer Museum. The club also put out its own newsletter, MC Microcomputer News. Malden Catholic says thank you! 87 88 89 Varsity Sports Catholic Matignon incord-Car The 1982 Malden Catholic Football Team started its season with a demanding week of practice on Thompson’s Island and ended the season with an impressive 8-2 record. Under the leadership of tri-captains Mike Duran, John Fidler, and Eric Grava, the squad pulled together and performed like a well-oiled machine. Coach Joe Lang said, “The season was one of tremendous satisfaction. The players met all the challenges and there were quite a few. It was a team with great character, desire and poise. They have contributed greatly to the ‘new M.C. Football Tradition.’ ” The staff of coaches Lang, Flynn, Norton, Marchetti, and Segal gave the Lancers an edge over their rivals and helped them to gain second place in the Catholic Conference and seventh place in Divi¬ sion II. Individual performances on the team should also be noted. Seniors Steve Bond, Mark Tarpey, Steve Nolan, and Mike Duran were all essential to the team’s success. Bond was quarterback up through mid-season, until he was, unfortunately, side-lined with a knee in¬ jury, forcing him to turn the reins over to Sophomore Gary Giordano. Steve passed for a total of 321 yards and rushed for 104 yards. Tarpey was the leading scorer with 72 points, and was our greatest asset on the ground, with 190 carries for a total of 1027 yards. Nolan was the leading pass receiver with 25 receptions for 502 yards. Defensively, Tri-captain Mike Duran was leading tackier with 92 tackles, 23 of which were unassisted. This was due in large part to the pre¬ season injury of Senior co-captain Steve Bond. However, there were a few bright moments in the season, especially the thrilling two point vic¬ tory over highly rated Catholic Memorial this past winter. Although the Lancer Hockey Team didn’t have a winning season this year, they did play tough all year, and they never stopped trying. This squad, under the direction of Head Coach Jake Falvey, was a young, but talented team. It was a team that had spirit and the incredible will to win. The leadership of Senior Captains Mike Duran, Dan Campbell and John Fidler was a ma¬ jor element that helped to hold the squad together. Along with Seniors Pete Marino, Bob Bova, Mike O’Keefe, Frank Dolaher and Pat Mullin, the underclassmen went through a lot of tough work trying to stay afloat in the tough Catholic Conference. Some of them who played extremely well were Juniors Tom Sassoand, Paul Anthony; and Sophomores Robbie Hardy (before an unfortunate injury cut his season short), Greg Polaski, and netminder Dennis Prior. During the season, there was one highpoint that marked this team as a superior squad: it came at the beginning of a three game winning against arch¬ rival Arlington Catholic — alias M.C. West (four transfers from Malden Catholic). The score was 8-0 in favor of the Lancers. Despite the losing record, M.C. hockey players as well as the fans can reflect on the 1982-1983 season as a rebuilding year. M.C. can look forward to a bright season next year. 1st: Jim Flanagan, John Kirwan, Mike Fronzak, Ron Boudreau, Mike Keegan, Chuck Coleridge, Tim Trainor, John Egan, Rich Wronski. 2nd: Mr. Tannian, Tom Rosato, John Hannaberry, Frank Storella, Chris La Conte, John Wronski, Earl Fitzpatrick, Andy Fronzak, Tim Galvin, Coach Ruggerio. 3rd: Kevin Hearn, Brian McCarthy, Leo Sullivan, Jim Davis, Mark Laben, Jim McNeill, Dave Morrison, Barry Toland, Vinnie Ferri, Chris Lanni, Arthur Puopolo, Bob Anzoni, Charlie Hugo, Steve Zizza, Don Jarvis. 4th: Matt Overlan, Tim Gleason, James Mangen, Jim Karos, Frank Capone, Sean Randall, Mike O’Brien, Marc Rabideau. Indoor Track The 1982-83 Indoor Track Team ex¬ perienced one of its most successful seasons ever. Led by Coaches Bro. Myles McManus, Lou Riggerio, and Joe Tannian. The team came within one meet of taking the league championship. Despite several key injuries, the team never let down. Tri- Captains Ron Boudreau, Mike Keegan, and Mike Fronczak helped lead the team in the 300, 2 mile, and 600 respectively. Jim Flan- nagan was a major contributor in the mile as was Kevin Hearn. Freshman Marc Rabideau was a pleasant surprise in the 2 mile. John Kirwan and Tim Trainer with the help of Tim Galvin led the Lancers in the fifty yard dash and in the hurdles. M.C.’s strongest event was the shot put team which was placed 4th in the state relays. The team consisted of Steve Zizza, Tony Natola, and Andy Fronc¬ zak. The quartet of Flannigan, Keegan, Hearn, and Fronczack broke the school record in the 2 mile relay while placing 5th in the state. M.C. had several runners qualify for the state championship meet, and with the upcoming underclassmen, M.C. track has a bright future. Rich Wronski on the inside track Yes, I can defy gravity! Swimming The M.C. Swim Team finished a 6-8 this season in a strong Catholic Conference. Under the leadership of Coach Brother Dan Cremin, Assistant Coach Bro. Fred Eid, and Captain Bill Coffin. There were many highlights for the team where half the members were freshmen. One varsity record was broken, and all but 2 of the freshman records were shattered. Paul Johnson set a new varsity record for diving while Pete Bon- na set a new freshman diving record. Other freshman records were broken by David Eisenhaur (200 yd. and 500 yd. freestyle) and Mike McCarron (100 yd. freestyle, backstroke and butterfly; and 200 yd. in¬ dividual medly). Most team members turned in strong individual performances at the Catholic Conference Meet. The five members of the team who qualified for the Northern Sectionals were Bill Coffin (100 yd. freestyle), Mike McCarron (100 yd. backstroke), David Eisenhaur (500 yd. freestyle), George Stodolnic (100 yd. breast-stroke) and Paul Johnson (100 yd. breast-stroke and diving). The return of the majority of the team should bring strength and depth to next years squad.
