The clubs takes, develops, and prints all its own pictures, some of which are featured in the Lance and the Crystal 99. Occasionally a picture is used by a local newspaper such as The Malden Evening News. The Crystal 99 The Crystal 99 is the official school newspaper. It is written and published five times a year by the students of Malden Catholic under the supervision of moderator Mr. James C. Markey. The paper provides the Malden Catholic Community with news about sports, activities, academics and school life in general. One of the primary functions of The Crystal is to offer to any student the opportunity to expand his journalistic abilities. This year’s paper, edited by Phil McGovern, was one of the most successful in Malden Catholic’s fourteen year history. This was largely due to the fact that it was laid out en¬ tirely by hand at the school, under the direction of Lay-Out Editor Charlie Doucot. The paper’s new look was one of the keys to its success, which the entire staff hopes will carry over to next year. Math Team The Math team at Malden Catholic consists of a small group of talented, hard-working men. This year’s team has exhibited a dedication which past teams have lacked. The team’s moderator, Brother Fred Eid, C.F.X., has stressed the impor¬ tance of practice and instituted a rigid and difficult practice schedule. This year the team participated in two leagues. The first of these is the Greater Boston Mathematics League, in which they had five meets. The second league is the New England Mathematics League, in which the team had six home meets. They also competed in several nationwide tests. The team’s members for the ’81-’82 season included: seniors Arthur Lauretano, Gary Schneider, and Keith White: juniors Alex Kim, Dennis Nagle, and Tim Raczkowski; and sophomore Anthony Fortunato. Brother Eid commented on the intensity of the M.C. Math Team: “The Math Team is not a one season act.” The members revealed this full-year participation through their con¬ stant dedication. The members received awards at the end of the year for their service to the Math Team and to Malden Catholic. Top: Brother Fred Eid, C.F.X., Gary Schneider, Arthur Lauretano, Keith White. Bottom: Anthony Fortunato, Dennis Nagle, Alex Kim, Tim Raczkowski. Chess Club In his first year as moderator of the chess club, Brother Matthais Doherty and his senior-dominated team enjoyed a fine chess year. They performed particularly well at Austin Prep, considering that they had not competed in this capacity for two years. In participation this year were seniors Tom Newman, Bob Collins, Frank Shea, James Storella, and Mike Aronis. Heavy support came from Timothy Rackowski and Kenneth Doyle. 82 Art Club As usual the Art Club, under the direction of Ms. Austin, did a superb job decorating the school for Open House. The Art Club also did a particularly notable job of prepar¬ ing the foyer appropriately for the Advent Season. The sun shining through the bold greens and reds was a real “eye- opener” on some of those cold mid-winter days. The club worked on pottery, ceramics, and painting and created sets for the Dramatic Productions. Fred D’Angelo and Santo Giovenelli Top: Mark lantosca, Fred D’Angelo, Moderator Ms. Penelope Austin. The team was headed by President Doug Howard and Vice-Presidents Jason Cleary and Alex Kim along with Moderators Valerie Vojdik and Ben Mardell. Also included this year was a Novice Team: Tim Rac- zkowski, John Gavin, Collin Murray, and Phil Dussault. The team focus¬ ed on the topic of corporal punishment in high school education. A few of the institutions where our team expressed those views were Bates College, UMass in Amherst, Suffolk University, Barrington High School, and Harvard University. In preparation for this year’s tournaments Alex Kim, Doug Howard, and Jason Cleary attended the Bates College Summer Debate Institute in Lewiston, Maine in late August. The team’s winnings reflect the hard work and time the members put in. Con¬ gratulations! National Honor Society In December of our Senior year, thirty-six seniors were chosen to become me mbers of the National Honor Society. Each stu¬ dent was chosen for having demonstrated a high degree of ex¬ cellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The inductees became members of the National Society on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the chartering of the Brother Gilbert Chapter of the National Honor Society. The members of the National Honor Society from the Class of 1982 were: Kenneth G. Antonucci, Michael Aronis, Gregory Ciampa, Gary D. Cronin, Timothy J. Crowley, Stephen G. Curry, James F. Racquetball Club The Racquetball Club is new this year, and the moderator is Mr. Kennedy. The Club plays weekly at the Winchester Rac¬ quetball Club. So far this year the club has been enthusiastic and energetic. In the beginning of the year the members were playing each other for fun. Then Mr. Ken¬ nedy organized a challenge ladder, and since that time the competition has been unbelievable. Pastoral The Pastoral Ministry Team has become a most energetic force in its first year at M.C. Its objective is the enhancement of our spirit as a Christian Community, as well as the understanding of ourselves and others. These goals are accomplished through various retreats and other religious ac¬ tivities such as the school-wide Mass. The team was chiefly responsible for the success of this summer’s Leadership In¬ stitute. Thirty-four seniors ac¬ companied the team, as well as Bro. Daniel Skala, C.F.X., Bro. Thomas Molloy, C.F.X., Bro. David Wiggin, C.F.X., Mr. Richard Mazzei, and Mr. Ralph Fucillo, to Wareham for the five-day program. Many of the seniors applied this experience by volunteering to assist the Team in conducting the Sophomore Overnights. Other programs, such as the Thanksgiving Food Drive, were conducted with the coopera¬ tion of the chairman of the Religious Committee, Arthur Lauretano. The team plans a host of new programs for the 1982-83 school year. Bro. Jeremiah O’Leary, C.F.X. The council owes its effi¬ ciency not only to its dedicated members and moderator, but to the students who support and encourage it. The Plenary Council for this year, which consists of a representative and alter¬ nate from each homeroom, has worked well at representing the student body and voting on perti¬ nent issues. The new stu¬ dent council moderator, Brother David Wiggins, C.F.X., has done an outstanding job advising and assisting the members of the council. Joe DiBella, student council president, along with John Pinette, vice- president, presides over the biweekly student council meetings. Joe and John have the responsibility of planning and organizing each meeting. This year ' s Athletic Com¬ mittee, headed by Joe Mahoney, has organized school intramural events and set up for sport events. Mike Hayes, chairman of the Cultural Committee, has planned several educa¬ tional trips for students and has successfully organized the fall bloodmobile. This year we will have a supplement so that the bulk of the school’s activities appear in these pages. As a result of this, the deadlines came fast and furious for the “hard-core” workers, and the demands on the members of the Camera Club like Jim Daly were Hurculean. Purdy Photographers contributed with several notable action shots of the football, basketball and hockey teams. Mrs. Brander and Mrs. Steeves deserve thanks for their vigilance on the bulletins and over the p.a., helping organize the disperate in¬ gredients brought together here that we hope the students, parents, faculty, and staff will enjoy. Weekly Journal Every Friday during homeroom, students receive a copy of the Weekly Journal, the weekly news leaflet which informs students of the happenings around the school. This year’s Journal staff include Frank Shea, Libby Fulgione, Arthur Lauretano, Mark lantosca and Tony Fabiano. The staff gets most of its information for articles by going directly to the source ... the students and faculty of the school. All articles drawn up are due each Wednesday for approval by Brother Dan Skala. Of course, this may sound easy, but as Frank Shea says, “A lot more work goes into a paper than is obvious.” Thanks for some great stories. The Journal also owes thanks to John Collins and John O’Neil. Science Club The Science Club was formed at the beginning of this year through the efforts of President, Hari Reddy and moderator, Mr. Frank Halas. The club made several after-hours trips to various places of scientific interest, such as the Museum of Science for lectures on the possible existence of Black Holes and the space shut¬ tle, as well as a tour of the AVCO Company in Everett. The club hopes to increase its membership in its second year. A-Bomb or Stink Bomb? Under the leadership of tri-captains Mike Norton, Paul Prescott, and Pete Grava, the squad pulled together and performed like a well-oiled machine. Coach Joe Lang says it was the team’s pulling together, and their “Future is Now” at¬ titude that allowed them to destroy such op¬ ponents as Matignon, Don Bosco, B.C. High, and Xaverian. The staff of coaches Lang, Hickey, McDougall, Murray, Flynn, and Tam- bussi gave the Lancers an edge over their rivals and helped them to gain second place in the Catholic Conference and fourth place in Division II. Individual performances on the team should also be noted. Peter Grava, Mike Norton, Paul Prescott, and Al Amigo were named to the Catholic Conference All-Stars, with Peter Grava as the Catholic Conference M.V.P. Peter Grava was named to the Boston Globes All-Scholastic Football Team. Peter was the second leading scorer in Massachusetts with 22 touchdowns and 2 two-point conversions for 136 points. Peter also ran for an amazing 1,441 yards on 221 carries. The team and coaches look to just as an impressive season next year with most of the starters returning.
