The team unfortunately did not do as well as they hoped. Many of the defeats were by an agonizing one or two points; however, there were some bright spots such as the victories over Pope John, and C.M. 46 47 J.V. FOOTBALL ■ This year the J.V. Team was very dedicated and hard working. Their record could have been improved if they only had a few breaks. It seemed that whenever the team lost it was due to a very lucky play the opponent made. 48 FROSH FOOTBALL Led by Coach Aiello, the freshman foot¬ ball team finished the season with a dismal record of 1-8. The team was weak in ag¬ gressiveness which may have been the cause of their poor record. The team was unfor¬ tunately also plagued with numerous in¬ juries, which handicapped them from the beginning. Despite these shortcomings the team shows signs of improving in the com¬ ing years. Cross Country team, led by senior co-eaptains Dave Ventola and Dan Lynch, finished the season with a disappointing record of 0-6. Despite the poor record, there were many fine single performances turned in during the season. Other seniors on the team are: Mike McDonough, and James Behan. Returning to the squad next year will be: junior Tom Gorman; sophomores, Mike Fronzack, John Wronski, and James Flanagan; freshmen: Joe Furey, Paul Anthony, and Mike Maffeo. With this fine basis, the cross-country team looks for a suc¬ cessful season next fall. 50 L-R. From the Bottom: Bro. Myles, D. Lynch, I). Ventola, J. Behan, M. Maffeo, T. Rosa to, R. Wronski, P. Directed by Brother Frank the cast, with the help of the Art club and stage crew, combined many long hours to make the presentation a success. The following panorama of pictures will hopefully bring back some pleasant memories of “A Year in the Life . . .” “A YEAR IN THE LIFE. . w I i 1 B Jil 1 ■ « IV JnPl 1 4jl SUPER SCRUFF 52 OOUCH!!! 53 VARSITY SOCCER With Bro. Dan Cremin coaching the team the varsity soccer team completed another challenging season. Their disappointing record of 4-7-4 doesn ' t really tell the entire story. The team captain, led by seniors Chris Rooney, Tom Allen, and Paul Cox, played with great in¬ tensity throughout the season. With a good number of members returning to the squad, plus a great deal of talent coming up from the J.V. and Frosh teams, the squad hopes next year will be a very successful season. I.-R: Pual Cox, Chis Rooney, Thomas Allen, Don Follet, Libbey Fulyione, John Magno, Tony Brandano, Pete Graffom. 2nd Row: Brother Cremin, George Gaffey. Many of their games were determined in the final seconds of play, and if they had fallen in M.C.’s favor, the team’s record could just as well have been 12-2-1. The captains of this year’s team, junior John O’Neil and sopho¬ more Garrie Faller, will, along with the rest of the team, contribute their talents and skill to the success of next year’s varsity team. 1 m 4 mh v|e I i ’ZJwim ' ' Hr - 9H| i - 4 m If 9 JH Lj| I JMrC- | M- A Ww 1 ■ T M h r Front, L-R: R. However, it should be stated that 5 games were lost by less than 3 points, includin g three that were lost by a painstaking point. The highlights of the season were the double defeats of Don Bosco, Xaverian, Columbus and Arlington Catholic. I SKI CLUB The Ski Club is a group of outgoing young men, expert skiers and beginners, who venture into the vast mountain ranges of New Hamp¬ shire, Vermont, and Canada. The club sponsored twenty-one trips this year. Moderator Mr. Charles Chisholm felt that this year’s program was successful. A great deal of credit should be given to the club of¬ ficers, President Jim Tarpey, Vice-President Pete Graffam, Treasurer Brian Shea, Junior Representatives Joe O’Sullivan and Don Follett, Sophomore Representative Brian Barry and Freshmen Representative Phil Amico, for their work in organizing the trips. Well, that ' s one way to stop. 74 AAAHHH!!! They didn’t say anything about bringing skiis. VARSITY HOCKEY The Varsity team, under the coaching of Mr. Jake Falvey, ended the season with a record of 8- 6, good enough for third place in the Catholic Conference one of the toughest leagues in the na¬ tion, and an overall record of 10-9-1. Highlights of the year were the stunning victories over St. John’s Prep and State runner up St. Peter’s of Marion. A couple of tough losses to Matignon and Archbishop Williams were the only things that kept this team out of the states this year. Although many players are graduating this year, the team has a great deal of talent coming up from the J.V. and Frosh. These players will keep M.C. up among the hockey power in the area. The players will also provide for a strong varsity team next year, the LANCE wishes them good luck. Perhaps the highlight of the year was when the team defeated St. John’s Prep Varsity when the major portion of our varsity was unable to play. The team’s overall record was 8-6; 4-1 in the Catholic Conference. The team competed with some of the best teams in the state, such as B.C. High, Haverhill, Winchester and Concord-Carlisle. The highlights of the season included the defeats of archrivals St. John’s Prep, Malden High, and Northeast Regional. The team was led by tri¬ captains Brian Rice and Mike McDonough of Melrose, and Erich Bockley of Medford. Andrew Joseph A native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Brother Andrew Joseph (John T. Stapleton) grew up in Somerville and was one of the many Xaverian Brothers who received their early education at St. Joseph’s in Somerville. He entered the congregation in February, 1924 and received a B.S. degree from Boston College in 1942 and a Master’s degree in Education from Columbia Teachers’ College in 1949. His former students remember him particularly as a mathematics teacher and as a basketball coach. He served in many places: Elm Grove, West Virginia; St. Mary’s, Norfolk; Assumption Academy and St. Francis de Sales and Notre Dame in Utica; Holy Name, Brooklyn, where he was principal for two years; the Juniorate in Peabody; Working Boy’s Home, Newton Highlands; St. John’s, Worcester; Archbishop Stepinac in White Plains; Keith Academy in Lowell; and John Bapst in Bangor. During the last five years, he was in retirement at Malden Catholic. The emphysema which had afflicted him for many years finally resulted in his death on the evening of April 5 at D’Youville Manor in Lowell where he had entered just ten days previously. May he rest in peace. 119 4 LONG SHORT YEARS 120 If you orient yourself, muffle your teacher, know the headmaster, take charge on the court, befuddle your coach, the four years will be a breeze! 121 122 123 OUTDOOR TRACK Under the direction of Bro.
