Though plagued by spotty hit¬ ting, the defense and pitching were superb. Senior Chuck Allen led this year’s hitting with an excellent batting average. The team looks forward to an influx of new blood from the J.V. team. Ssssfe First Row, L-R: John Spagnoli, Lou DiFronzo, Jim Gaffey, Tom Gilmartin, Barry Goodwin, Walter McNeill. BASEBALL The 1980 J.V. club, batting .500 with a 9-9 record, showed lots of promise for the future. With pitchers Joe Mahoney, Jim McDonald, and John Thulin, and Al Amigo behind the plate, the team set up an excellent foundation for the ’81 Varsity. Coach Mr. Tom Arria commented on the team’s fine hitting and the fact that they had “lots of speed on the bases.’’ We wish them con tinued success in future games. Front, L-R: Steve Bond, Joe DiBella, Gary Cronin, John Thulin, Dan Clark, Shawn Fennell, Tony Celli. Back: Al Amigo, Jim Tarpey, Ed Deasy, Jim Ken¬ ney, Paul Prescott. 112 FROSH BASEBALL The ’80 Frosh finished 6-2, losing their first two games but making a terrific comeback. Coach Mr. Bernie Winne cited the short schedule as a problem in giving his large team enough playing time. He also remarked that the team played well in positions foreign to them on certain occasions. Pitchers Steve Bond and Steve Nolan contributed excellent seasons, and the whole team played well offensively. This year’s freshmen will undoubtedly play an important part in M.C. base¬ ball for the next few years. £4 1 r ' d Front, L-R: Coach Winne, Robert Allen, Mike Mahoney, Mike Turilli, Steve Nolan, Chris Ryan, Bob Keenan, Tony LoPilato, Kevin Bennett. Some examples: In the y4-mile, Keith White set a new M.C. record of 53.1 seconds. Paul Toland hit 6 ' 1 in the high jump. Steve Anzuoni set an M.C. javelin record of 179 ' 8 . Tom Allen and Anzuoni combined for 344 ' 8 to take second in the State Relays. Anzuoni was selected for the Outstanding Per¬ formance award. Pat McGonagle, a double winner in high and low hurdles, was M.C.’s Outdoor MVP. Mike MacKay, Keith White, Ralph Puopolo, and Rich Mullane placed 4th in the Sprint Medley at the State Relays, setting a new M.C. record. At the State Class B Championships, MacKay was 5th in the 440, Toland 5th in the high jump, Anzuoni 3rd in the javelin. To those here mentioned, and to all members of the team, our sincere congratulations. Senior Bill Kel¬ ley led the singles with outstanding force, and sophomore Bob Gior¬ dano also came on strong. The first doubles team of Allan Fitzmaurice and Doug Howard cap¬ ture victory over C.M., while the sec¬ ond doubles team rotated for much of the season. The “best and most professional show at Malden Catholic” was viewed by several hun¬ dred people, including dozens of senior citizens from Malden. The senior citizen transportation and refreshments were arranged by Mr. Constantino and Brother Lawrence Dunn, along with many student ushers. Mr. Kaufman was the club’s moderator and major kibitzer. The Chess Club competed in two informal matches with Mal¬ den High, one at each school. Led by seniors Daniel Bartlett and Jim Flynn and junior Joe Riley, the debate had a successful and far-ranging season, traveling as far as Louisville, Kentucky to compete. The debate team, always a big freshman interest, hopes that it will find some more great speakers in next year’s incoming class. 127 NA TIONAL •m HONOR SOCIETY Mr. John J. Science Club is a small but dedi¬ cated group of students who make several pilgrimages each year to scientific havens in the Boston area. Moderated by Mr. Frank Halas, this year’s club visited Boston Univer¬ sity, the Museum of Science, and listened to a lecture by the one and only Isaac Asimov. They also prepared a display for the fall Open House. Hopefully in the years to come, more M.C. students will take advantage of what the Sci¬ ence Club can offer. Science Club making milk shakes? The Math Team, under the guid¬ ance of Brother Frederick Eid and Mr. Tom Aiello, had a highly compe¬ titive season. President John Yang led the team to contests in the Greater Boston Math League and the New England Math League, in which member Dana Petroni was the high team scorer. The Math Team also organized the successful intramural Math meets. The Team will not only continue next year, it will help in the begin¬ ning of a computer club. We wish them all possible luck, and may their derivatives always integrate! MATH 129 The International Club at Open House 130 INTERNATIONAL CLUB BON JOUR! BUENAS DIAS! Mrs. Lyons and Mrs. Johnson, the joint moderators of the International Club, had an excellent time this year. With Mark Fallon, president, and Mike Maloney, vice-presi¬ dent, the group has been socially and cul¬ turally active. They visited restaurants and attended the International Fair at the Hynes Auditorium. They also cooked a sumptuous meal for themselves and some members of the faculty. The club intends to expand next year to become an even more active organization. CAMERA Mike Manzi brushing up on his photography. Moderator Brother Joseph Bob Anzuoni M.C.’s Camera Club is the organization which does all of the photography for the Crystal 99 and LANCE, and often for local papers. Under the mod¬ eration of Brother Joseph Britt, the Camera Club met weekly to decide which M.C. activities should be covered. Members included President Mike Manzi, Bob Whelan, Bob Anzuoni, Ron Whelan, Jim Daly, and Bill Van Tassell. The LANCE would like to give its special thanks to the camera-carriers for a job very well done. ART Malden Catholic’s Art Club consisted mainly of four loyal members, under the direction of Miss Penelope Austin. The club worked on pottery, ceramics, and paint¬ ing, and created the sets for the background of this year’s musical “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.” The Art Club expects increased membership next year. 132 DEVELOPMENT OFFICE Mr. Constantino after another rough day. Mr. A.J. Constantino, Director of Development, and Development Secretary Mrs. Bernice Sarnie worked year-round to raise funds for the school and to keep in touch with M.C.’s alumni. This year saw a significant increase in alumni donations to the school, as well as the most successful “ad drive” in M.C. history — neeting over $20,000 for our athletic program. The Development Office also played a major role in the 1979 Homecoming reception and the coordination of senior citizens transportation and refreshments at performances of “How To Suc¬ ceed.” The Development Office is a vital link between Malden Cath¬ olic and its graduates and friends. We wish the Director of Develop¬ ment all the best for the future. 133 CHEERLEADERS Girls’s Catholic cheer¬ leaders are the most loyal fans to the J.V. and Var¬ sity teams of Malden Catholic. Under the direc¬ tion of Mrs. Donna Mari- nelli, the cheerleaders cheer for the basketball, hockey, and football teams and keep their morale high throughout the seasons. Daniel Cremin and Mr. Barry Haley, consisted of four sports: Volleyball, Basketball, Hockey, and Wif- fleball. Some of the winning teams included the Sopho¬ more team Keg and the Jun¬ ior team Mad Dogs in Floor Hockey, and the Junior team Slammers in the Wiffleball competition. Intramurals is an excellent alternative to interscholastic sports for students who do not have the time for these. 136 CRYSTAL 99 Mr. Markey and Lou DiFronzo This year ' s Crystal 99 was moderated by Mr. James Markey and edited by Lou DiFronzo. Pub¬ lished five times during the school year, the newspaper kept students informed and amused with its combination of sports news, movie and record reviews, general news items, and com¬ mentary and satire. Dis¬ tributed free of charge to the M.C. community, the Crystal 99 remains a cor¬ nerstone of student media in the school. WEEKL Y The Crystal 99’s little brother is the Weekly Journal. Pub¬ lished and distributed to home¬ rooms every Friday by co-edi¬ tors Rich Mullane, Dan Kirsch, and Mike Kerrins, the Weekly kept M.C. informed of sports news and daily meetings, as well as bringing general inter¬ est items up to date. The weekly always gave us another reason to look forward to Fri¬ days. Co-editor Rich Mullane 137 From early September until late July, a small, dedicated band of M.C. students worked to produce a mom- ento of the school year and a book of memories for the class of 1980. The book you now hold is the end result of that labor. Under the direc¬ tion of LANCE moderator Brother Joseph Britt and co-editors Ron Imperiali and Jim Chiavelli, the 1980 LANCE became reality. We have tried to reflect what we have seen as the highlights of the year, as well as those things which hold special sig¬ nificance for graduates. We hope you enjoy reading. LANCE The incomparable P. O’Brien Jim Chiavelli, Moderator Brother Joseph Britt, Rich Mullane 138 140 UNSUNG HEROES Perhaps the most unrecognized group in the school is the student work force, which is responsible for many facets of the upkeep of Malden Catholic. The workers include Mr. Mazzei’s Work Crew, Brother Philip White’s Bingo Crew, and Brother Joseph Britt’s Kitchen Crew. These workers appear after everyone else has gone home to perform their tasks with enthusiasm and keep the building and grounds in order. M.C. owes a debt of thanks to all of them. On the first of October, 1979 A.D., His Holiness Pope John Paul II began his historic tour of the United States with a Mass celebrated on the Boston Common, with mil¬ lions in attendance. Neither the man nor the Mass will be forgotten by those who endured a day of rain and crowds to get a “peek at the Pope.’’ 143 PROM The Junior-Senior Promenade, held on May 2 at Dan- versport Yacht Club, was the final social event of the 79- 80 school year for about 135 couples. Students and their dates enjoyed a roast beef dinner and listened to the band Techniques. Starting at 7:30 and concluding at mid¬ night, the Prom was a memorable night for all who attended. The highlights of the Prom were the choosing of the King and Queen, John Glynn and Marie McWilliams, and the playing of the theme song — “Always and Forever.” The Prom was planed by the Prom Committee, which had the largest number of junior members in recent M.C. history, moderated by Brother Daniel Skala and chaired by Jim Chiavelli.
