No matter how far apart our lives and ambitions take us, we will always have fond memories of our friends and experiences at Malden Catholic. We hope that in the years to come, when we turn the pages of this year¬ book, the pictures will remind us of how much we treasured our days in high school. — Editors WALDEN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL DEDICA TION For the past four years, Malden Catholic has provided for us, the class of 1979, a remarkably dedicated faculty. As we look back over our high school career, certain teachers stand out, not so much for the hours we spent in their classroom, but because of the love and friendship they have shown towards us. This caring, most definitely shows in their methods of teaching, but it also shows in the help they have given us phys¬ ically, mentally, and spiritually. One such man is Brother Tim Skala, C.F.X. Whether he is teaching, giving us pushups, or accompany¬ ing us on our days of experience, Bro. Tim has shown his brotherly love to us. 4 5 P . 2 Si ' ’! ££ jH : :j:S jg ,. :ss ' I S|flfiSS$9 Tri-Captains: Chris Barry, Ralph Grava and Chris Perna mitfm Mike Zarho Michael Madden and his bag of tricks. ' wm. Ralph Grava The 1978 varsity football team, led by tri-captains Chris Barry, Chris Perna, and Ralph Grava, scored several triumphs, both inter¬ nally and externally. After gaining their first win of the season from Matignon, the team went on to overpower Xaverian, West Roxbury and Pope John. The team can attribute these strong victories to awesome defense and a quick rushing offense. Recognition for these victories must also be paid to head coach Mr. Joseph Lang, director of secondary defense and offensive backs Mr. Charles Stevenson, and coach of defensive and offensive lines Mr. Brian Hickey. The team also owes a special thanks to J.V. coaches Scott McDougle and Jim Campbell who greatly aided them during the season. 52 Chris Barry going for the touchdown. J-V- FROSH Although this year’s J.V. team did not have a winning sea¬ son, they did show much promise for the future. A disappoint¬ ing 2-6 record and several injuries would totally discourage most teams but our J.V. team is ready to return next year fur¬ ther skilled, experienced, and ready to win. Despite a losing record, the Lancers managed to defeat our major rival, Pope John in the opening game. Outstanding players on the team were Billy Franzese and Ron Webb, how¬ ever, the entire front line was exceptional which brings much hope for the Varsity team of 1980. The squad, under the direction of Coach Bro. Myles McManus and Asst. Coach Mr. Louis Ruggerrio, took second place in their conference. Captain Paul Esdra finished the season undefeated at his home course, Pine Banks, and lost only one dual meet all season. Paul was also named Most Valuable Player in the Catholic Conference as well as being named to the seven man all-star team. Along with Captain Esdra, the varsity squad was made up of Asst. Captain Steve McGlynn, seniors Steve Eisenhaur, Larry Harvey, Mike Cameron, Rich Fay and Victor Olson as well as juniors Rich Mullane and Brian Baynes. Cremin called this sea¬ son one of the most consistent, solid, two-way soccer teams, competitive until the final whistle. The team was led by captains John Flanagan and Marko Duffy along with seniors, Mike Cantalupa, Mike Tringale, Frank Useglio, Charlie Kelley, Bob Cutone, Bob DiNuccio, Peter Anastasi, and first year goalie Mike Stanton. With 15 players returning next year, Bro. Cremin expects another strong team. Soccer team showed great protnise despite a deceiving record of 4-6-1 and despite the fact that a great majority of the team were in their first year as soccer players. The team was highly spirited and dedicated. The J.V.’s won their first four out of five games while tying the other. The team suffered disheartening losses in their last six games of the season. Five of these games however, were lost by only a one point margin showing that the team had great determination and enthusiasm. All in all, however, this team would not have been able to survive in the league with¬ out the coaching and guidance of Bro. Frederic Eid and Mr. Manny Costa. The J.V. The team led by tri-captains Kenny Viscarello, Mike Sta¬ ton and Marc Pedi took first place in the Catholic Central League. Though inexperienced with only four seniors, Stanton, Viscarello, Angelo Papa and Paul Esdra the team impressed not only their fans but the other teams in the league. Behind the high scoring junior Marc Pedi who boasted a 24.6 average of points per game, the team blazed its way to the semi-finals of the Division 2 North State Tournament. The team reached the semi-finals by beating Triton and Newburyport only losing to a tough Wayland team in the closing seconds of the game. Throughout the year the starting five of Pat Barone and Mike Clark at guards, Kenny Viscar¬ ello at center, and Mike Stanton and the electrifying Marc Pedi forwards, provided excitement for their fans with disciplined play and a true team effort. The season was culminated by Kenny Viscarello being named to the Catholic Central All-Star Team and Marc Pedi being named the League’s Most Valuable Player. The rest of the team included Angelo Papa, Paul Esdra, Mike Kerrins, Ron Brown, George Nealon, Don Gior¬ dano, and Steve Moschella. BASKETBALL The J.V. Basketball team, under the leader¬ ship of Coach Mr. Fran¬ cis Halas, played hard and well. The team showed much talent and gives much hope for next year’s J.V. and Varsity teams. With 12 returning sen¬ iors, all expected at least a qualification for the states. Yet, for the third straight year, the M.C. icemen fell short of making that shot to the Garden. A 10-6-1 record placed the Lancers third in the awesome Catholic Con¬ ference. However, a 10-6-1 record is not a bad sea¬ son . Compared to the traditional M.C. hockey season can this season be considered somewhat of a disappointment. Coach Con- ceison was pleased with the seniors, their leadership qualities, and the efforts they made. Captain Jim Turner and leading scorer, Mike DiCenzo, were selected to the all Conference Team. Next year with four remaining lettermen and very strong J.V. and Frosh squads, the M.C. Lancers will again be hoping for that recently unattainable playoff birth. Sitting. L-R: J. Crowther, W. They worked well as a team and showed how cooperation between players results in a good squad. The team was composed mostly of Juniors and Sophomores with Chris Lyons and Danny Lynch in the net. John Gately acted as the team man¬ ager. The team was coached by Mr. Fred Devereaux and looks forward to an even more successful season next year. Freshman Lancer Coach Mike Devlin led his icemen to their second straight successful season. A league record of 7-1- 2 placed the frosh among the leaders in the powerful fresh¬ man-sophomore Catholic league. Joe Rizzo was the team’s chosen leader. The high scoring line of Joe Rizzo, Elmer King, Billy Goodwin, A1 Amigo, Joe Turner, and goalies Don Mal- erba, Pat Walsh, Chris Hussey and Tony Maddaleni were the essential factors to the defensive game. But the team;s success was not the result of anyone or any group of players. Out¬ standing efforts by all team members helped the team suc¬ ceed. A special thanks goes to Paul Cameron and Mike Zarbo for managing the team. FRESHMAN HOCKEY 90 First Row, L-R: S. Fennell, G. Gaffey, C. Hussey, P. Walsh, T. Maddaleni, D. Malerba, S. DeLuccia, J. Bill McEleney blazed to a new 300 yard dash record of 334 to down the longstanding school standard. The high jump proved vital with Tom Barker leading the way with a school record of 6 ' 2 to down the year old record of 6T . In the shot put. Art McDermott led Jeff Slavin and Dan Kirsch by putting the shot 59 ' 4 to set the new school record. He then went on to cap¬ ture the State and New England Championships. McDermott and McEleney continued on in post season action by attending the Eastern State Championships, with McDermott grabbing third. Outstanding performances were displayed by Hollis Clark, Marko Duffy, Steve Eisenhauer, and Richard Fay to mention a few. Many students on the team broke new records including Kenny Antonucci, Frank Chiara and John Rice in various relays. Several swimmers went to the Massachusetts State Championship including John Rice, Steve Eisenhaur, Eric Bockley, and Kenny Antonucci. Steve Eisenhaur then went on to the New England Championships. There were however, several excellent individual perform¬ ances and many new school records. Mike Tringale established the triple jump record at 39T 1 while Roger Fielding downed the 330 low hurdles record of 41.8 with a speedy 41.7 perform¬ ance. In the throwing events Art McDermott brought down the discus record of 149 ' 10 with a heave of 165 ' in the N.E. Catho¬ lics. Steve Anzuoni shattered the javelin mark with a 174 ' toss at the all-state meet, while McDermott won the all-state meet in the shots at 56 ' 9 3 4 . Bill McEleney and Tom Barker handled the sprints well with Barker also going undefeated in the high jump in dual meets. The distance corps of Paul Esdra, seventh in the class meet, Larry Harvey and Steve McGlynn came through with many valuable points. Overall, a very strong showing at the State Relays, 1st in shots, 3rd in the discus, and 4th in the shuttle hurdles showed just what the team could have done “if” all were going well. Dan Cremin. once again offered a variety of opportunities for would-be ath¬ letes to shine. Organized on both a home-room and an open basis, participation was great. In fact, some homerooms were even forced to form two teams because of extremely large turn¬ outs. Students were presented a chance to indulge, for the first time, in five intramural sports: Gym Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Floor Hockey, and Whiffle Ball. Some of the sports were divided into Junior-Senior and Freshman-Sophomore leagues. All-Stars were chosen in each sport after the titles had been decided. Although each sport had well-balanced leagues, perhaps none was more tightly contested than the Junior-Senior Volleyball league. 11-11 defeated the Brewski’s to set up a championship rematch. In a taut, three-set thriller, observed by a large number of faculty and students, the Brewski’s outlasted 11-11 in a highly controversial match to cap the championship. And, although not everyone was able to win, everyone, none¬ theless, enjoyed the Intramurals. SCIENCE CLUB Mike Polia, Dave Serafini, Peter Mavilio The Science Club, under Moderator Mr. Frank Halas, had a very enjoyable season. The club was moderated by Madame Nancy Lyons and Senora Christine Johnson with Kenny Chase as president and Steve Ducharme as vice-presi¬ dent. The club has been on numerous outings to local foreign and elegant restaurants such as the “Kowloon” and the “Magic Pan.” During this year’s open house, the club put on a fantastic display. The incoming frosh and their parents sampled foreign delicacies and viewed slides of France, Spain and Mexico. The members met several times each month. The Interna¬ tional Club is one club at M.C. which definitely puts some culture into one’s life. Next year, the club hopes to plan a few more field trips. For the girls, the season started last May after tryouts and they continued to work hard throughout the summer preparing for football season. The squad also cheered for the Varsity Hockey and Basketball teams. The girls on the squad were seniors: Cap¬ tain Teresa Hooper, Nancy Barthelemess, Laura Bullard, Anna Cammerano, Susan Creilson, Marie DeCandia, Kathie Keegan, Carolyn Mackley and Karen Petta, the juniors: Bev¬ erly Curry, Karen Bond, Carolyn Pennette and Kim Hayes. Mark Shachat as Eggnog, or whatever the heck his name was. SING WORLD SING The title of our eleventh annual musical extravaganza. Sing World Sing, was very appropriate. Our director W. Emmett O’Brien took a different approach this year as opposed to the past two years. Much more acting, singing, and dancing were added, resulting in an exciting and enjoyable show. It was through Mr. O’Brien’s versatil¬ ity as a director and the immense talent of the cast that this show was a success. The list of outstanding actors who contributed to the success of the show goes on and on. This year the show was moved to April to avoid interruption by inclement weather. The season of the show, however, had no effect on the quality of it. Under the able leadership of John Touchette, the staff hopes to have completed a book which will be enjoyed by all. The yearbook staff is a very worth¬ while activity for any student and hopefully the ’79 Lance will persuade more students to join the staff. John Touchette, Larry Harvey and John Gallagher Brother Dan Skala and Mr. Rich Mazzei, Moderators Ron Imperali Underclass Editor This year, the third annual edition of the school literary magazine Innocence and Experience went to press. Under the supervision of editor Clayton Mattos and faculty advisors Ms. Florence Kuhn and Brother Daniel Skala, twenty-eight con¬ tributing and eighteen staff members collaborated to compile a wide spectrum of literary genres. The content of this edition ranges from poetry to short sto¬ ries to satirical essays. Several entries are accompanied by graphic illustrations which vivify their themes. Among the most striking features is the combination of art and poetry as poems are printed with newspaper and magazine lettering. The effect of this varied collection gives one an impression of “innocence.” or freshness of ideas with the “experience” of presentation. 136 The Weekly Journal, Malden Catholic’s weekly newsletter, was dis¬ tributed each Friday to homerooms in order that students would be informed on a day-to-day basis. Actors John Touchette, Stu Rotman, Mike Maloney, Steve DeGurski and Frank Shea have also teamed up with Girl’s Catholic’s Stage Struck which has established a unique support and friendship among the two companies. Recently, drama has taken a “dramatic” turn in popularity at M.C. Emmett O ' Brien brought “The King and I” to our stage last fall, and Bro. Brother Plunket has been a crucial part of Malden Catholic since 1966. He came from the old school on Highland Ave. to play a decisive role in the design and planning of the new building. In his years at M.C., Brother Plunket spent twenty-four hours each day maintaining the school as Building Superintendent. He taught math to many classes. In 1970, the LANCE was dedicated to him. And in 1977, Brother Plunket was awarded the Plus Ultra award at that year’s Commencement Exercises. Brother Plunket will be teaching next year at St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. BROTHER ROBERT GREEN , C.F.X. Brother Robert Green came to Malden Cath¬ olic in 1969. A graduate of Boston College and the old M.C., Bro. Robert also attended St. Mary’s grammar school in Melrose. He has been Associate Headmaster at M.C. for the past three years. In his years at M.C., he has taught French, German, English and Religion, as well as moderating the Crystal 99 for six years. Next year, Bro. Robert plans to go to Xavier H.S. in Middletown, Connecticut. MR. ADAM GEYER Mr. Geyer came to Malden Catholic in September of 1975. While here, he was guidance counselor, a teacher of Career Planning, and this past year, coach for the tennis team, which had a sensational sea¬ son. Mr. Geyer leaves M.C. to teach next year at a Commu¬ nity College. GOOD LUCK! FATHER FRANCIS DALEY Father Daley has been chaplain at Malden Catholic since 1973. He taught Religion courses which include Prayer and Meditation to seniors. He participated in class days and all school masses. Commodore Daley was moderator of the Sailing Club. And, he drove the school bus for most ath¬ letic, extracurricular, and aca¬ demic events. 143 STUDENT COUNCIL Throughout our four years at Malden Catholic, the role of the Student Council has greatly increased. Under the capable leader¬ ship of President Kevin Foley and Vice-President John Gallagher, the Student Council had a very successful year. The Religion Committee, with chairman Larry Harvey, was responsible for our food and sweater drives for the poor, class mas¬ ses, and Senior Citizen Nights on which elderly people were bused to M.C. to view Malden Catholic stage productions which included “The King and I” and “The Doctor’s a Quack.” The Cultural Committee plagued with resignations by the first two chairmen, finally clicked under John Touchette and pro¬ duced the most successful Bloodmobile in M.C.’s history, with 83 pints of blood being donated. The Athletic Committee was probably the most behind the scenes committee. Chaired by Steve Quevillon, it was responsible for our fall pep rally and setting up and announcing for our home basketball games. The Social Committee, the largest S.C. committee, was chaired by Richard Clark and planned our school dances, semi-formals and our highly successful Junior-Senior Promenade. Since many members of the 1979 Student Council are not pictured here, a complete list of members is as follows: Kevin Foley President John Gallagher Vice-President Richard Mullane Junior Councillor-at-Large Arthur Fitzpatrick Treasurer Miguel Benzan Secretary Anthony Martignetti Sophomore Councillor-at-Large Phil Canniff Student Council Advisory Delegate Larry Harvey Religion Chairman Rich Clark Social Chairman Steve Quevillon Athletic Chairman John Touchette Cultural Chairman Brother Joseph Britt, C.F.X. A new addition to M.C. this past year was the Development office, headed by Brother Peter Weston. Performing a very important function, the Development Office is trying to involve graduates of M.C. with the school. Bro. Peter has added a new source of income to the school with his cam¬ paign. At one time, he received almost $1000 in one week. Other activities of the Development Office include another “Las Vegas Night” scheduled for next fall. The proceeds from this event will help to pay for the office’s newly acquired com¬ puter. The Development Office was also involved in the Senior Citizens Nights, on which Senior Citizens were bused to the Hayes Theater to view M.C. shows. Students drove cars and vans along with Bro. Peter and Bro. Larry who drove the school bus. The shows were complimentary and refreshments were served. Bro. Peter and his assistant Miss Joanne Giannino did a fine job on all the projects. They also had help from students’ mothers and students themselves when it came to stuffing envelopes.
