Steve A1 Berti scored in this great defensive struggle. The second game was a thriller, M.C. being nipped by Cam¬ bridge Ringe and Latin, 12-6. Pat Downing accounted for the M.C. score as he plunged two yards after a long drive by the Lancers. The most exciting game of the year was the game against Don Bosco. Captain Tom Bond led an air attack to come from behind to tie the game at 14-14. Pat Downing scored in the first half with Kevin McHugh tying the game on a pass from Tom Bond. At this point, the Lancers had a 1-1-1 record, with expectations of winning many more games. But due to many injuries and a few unlucky breaks, M.C. lost 6 out of their last 7 games. M.C. won 12-8 in a mud battle against West Roxbury. Chris Barry had a great game scoring twice on passes from Tom Bond. The record does not show the desire and dedication of this team. The team played to the best of its ability even when hurt. The team gave 100% in every game, which was appreci¬ ated by all Lancer fans. The Lancers were led by Captain Tom Bond and All-Cath¬ olic Harry Cash, with help from Seniors, Bill Adams, Steve A1 Berti. Pat Downing, Sean Downing, Paul Malochowski, Kevin McHugh, Mike Moriarty, John Murphy, Mike Paze, John Perillo and Mike Tarpey. Under devoted Head Coach Brother Myles McManus, his assistant Mr. Lou Rug- geiro, and the strong leadership of captain John Garofano, M.C. was victorious over Bedford High, Archbishop Williams, St. John’s Prep, and surprised everyone with a victory over B.C. High. (The team narrowly lost to Don Bosco, Xaverian, and Catholic Memorial). The team’s victories were over Greater Lowell Regional, Minutemen Regional, and Shawsheen. John Appleton and Mark Duffy were named to the League’s All-Star team, while Frank Siega, Ralph Quinn, Paul West, and Steve O’Neil, all received Honorable Mention. This is the second year in a row the Varsity Hockey team did not make the Eastern Mass. State Tourney. Although the team was plagued with injuries, they did beat eventual state champs Hudson Catholic 5-4 in a pre-league game, and went 10-5-1 in the Catholic Conference for a strong third place finish. Junior star Jim Turner was named next year’s captain, was high scorer, and was also named to the league’s All-Star team along with captain Bill Adams. The team is coached by Mr. Devlin, a high school grad¬ uate of Malden Catholic. The three net keepers for the Freshman Lancers were Dan Lunch, Kevin Burns, and Phil Mondello. They all did good jobs in goal. The team was a very fast and aggressive one. Although they had no Sophomores on the team, they played in a Freshman-Sophomore League with little difficulty, as everybody expected. The team came off with key wins over both St. John’s Prep and Don Bosco. W0 Freshman Hockey j. V. Hockey The J.V. Hockey Team was both dedi¬ cated and enthusiastic. Nevertheless, snow or shine, everyday the Indoor Track Team was out in the back parking lot practicing for their next meet, not noticing or being bothered by the cold or the snow. This is because they have something more important on their minds; doing well, both on the team and individually. This year’s team, under Hea d Coach Brother Myles McManus, Assistant Coach Mr. Lou Ruggeiro, and co-captains Scott Harring¬ ton and Tom Dockery, did well by breaking even with 2 wins and 2 losses. Head Coach Brother Myles McManus and Assistant Coach Lou Ruggeiro were pleased with the team’s performance, especially their ending of a ten year reign by Xaverian, which was a definite show of the team’s persever¬ ance. Under the leadership of Tri-Captains Tom Dockery, Kevin McHugh, and Paul West, the team was victorious over Archbishop Williams, Xaverian, St. John’s Prep, and Catholic Memorial. They lost narrowly to Don Bosco and B.C. High. Next year ' s team will have lost several seniors in key positions but there are cer¬ tainly enough qualified underclassmen to replace them adequately. kneeling. L-R: T. Barker. D. Ventola. D. Lynch. Considering this, they did fairly well. There were some impressive freshmen and sophomores, which give hope to a better J.V. team next year. The Varsity Team, which was in a rebuilding stage this year, will also be looking forward to a better season next year. SSpSpIS Kneeling, L-R: J. Yang. K. Cerretani. M. Allen. K. Rice, D. DeCesare. ' V . ; ■ : s? - v ■ ■ V: The cast and crew were enthusiastic. The audience was small but the applause was loud. And so went opening night of “Music American Style,” one of the best in recent years. The nights which followed were even better, as were the audiences, which led to “standing room only” on closing night. The “Great Blizzard of ’78” postponed the show, but had no effect on the quality of it. Malden Catholic’s tenth annual musicale spectacular was written, staged, directed, and produced by Mr. Emmett O’Brien. Hundreds of stu¬ dents participated, coming from Malden Catholic, Girl’s Catholic, Pope John, Malden High, and various other neighboring schools. The dedi¬ cated cast, hard-working crew, and concerned and helpful faculty, all worked together to make this, once again, one of the most popular events of the year. 122 125 Intramurals - After having little success with the hockey intramurals in the fall, Bro. Dan Cremin organized a complete intramural schedule for the year, with the aid of Mr. Berte and Mr. Moresca. The sports consisted of touch football, indoor soc¬ cer, ten-pin bowling, softball, basketball, which was refereed by some of the Varsity Basketball players, and volleyball, which Girl ' s Catholic participated in. All in all, intramurals were much more successful this year than in the past, showing how organization and cooperation can provide relaxation and fun at the end of a hard school day. 126 Cheerleaders This year the Lancers had at least one loyal group of fans, the 1977-1978 Cheerleading Squad. Despite the rains of the football season and the snow during the hockey-basketball season, they were always there to cheer the team on. The girls helped us to realize that for teams to win, the spirit of the school must be with them. ” T Varsity 27 Mike Cryan and Hollis Clark working on the “Weekly 128 CRYSTAL 99 Five times this year, the CRYSTAL 99 came through with all the school news: the sports, the clubs, and all the other activities. On the days that the paper arrived back at the school from the printer, multitudes of students could be seen reaching for their copy. This year’s Editor-in-Chief was junior Vin Polito. The Associate Editors were Roland Lavallee and John Slattery, both seniors. The Photo Editor was Tom Luongo. Moderator Mr. James Markey, and a large staff, along with the editors, all worked together to provide this enjoyable paper to all the students and faculty. Each Friday, Mike Cryan’s “Weekly” was available to students to provide the more recent information and to make known the upcoming events. Working on the “Weekly” staff were Hollis Clark, Mike Tringale, and John Flanagan. Class of 1974), ended his reign as debate coach here with a very successful squad. Besides the extremely able upperclassmen, the frosh debate record this year was the best in the school’s history. Also, in a tournament at Keene, New Hampshire, the partners Jim Flynn and Joe Reilly became the top New England team. Other tournaments included ones at Philadelphia, Win- throp, Maine and Dartmouth. Our teams competed in the States, at Suffolk University, and the New England Districts, held this year at Milton Academy. Malden Catholic hosted two tourn aments; its own annual one. and the National Catholic Qualifying Tournament for New England. Both of these were coordinated by Mr. Veitch. All in all, the squad enjoyed an admirable record. ' jr sw Art Club The 1977-1978 M.C. Art Club, under the leadership of faculty advisor Ms. Penelope Austin, probably did more work than any other group of art students in recent years. All year they helped to publicize events around the school by making posters and designing programs. They also built the model “Statue of Liberty” for “Music Ameri¬ can Style” with just three days until opening night. The Art Club also painted the mural on the T.V. Studio wall. Carmen Sasso, Ed Brown, and Stu Rotman also found time to do individual work which won several first place awards in the Archdiocese Art Fair. Ed Brown also exhib¬ ited in the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Competition. 131 National Honor Society Class of 1978 James J. Adams Joseph Bellini Thomas Bond David Brown Edward Brown Kevin G. Once they arrive, they take sailing lessons at the M.D.C. Community Sailing Club. Most of the sailors solo by the end of the year, and three of them, Arthur Fitzpatrick, Joe Walsh, and Tom Colbert, became helmsmen. All of the impor¬ tant events in and around M.C., including Music American Style and the graduation, have been recorded to be used by future students and alumni. Some of the best work was the recording of football, basket¬ ball, and hockey games, which were shown on cable televi¬ sion. RADIO French Club The French Club, under moderator Mrs. Nancy Lyons and President Mark Har¬ rington had a very successful year. The club tested its culinary skills by preparing crepes and a French dinner for its members. To further acquaint its members with French food, the club also went to numerous French restaurants such as the “Magic Pan” and “Chez Dreyfus.” The club visited the mansions in Newport, Rhode Island. All club members are looking forward to another busy year next year. L-R: Bro. Robert Green, C.F.X.. Mark Harrington, Mrs. Johnson, John Gallagher. They took first place for the regular season in the small schools division of the Greater Boston Math League, finishing seventh overall out of 40 teams. The team is moderated by Mr. Aiello and Bro. Freder¬ ick Eid. C.F.X. Key competitors during the regular season were David Brown, the league’s 3 scorer, and Mark DuLong. Other members this season were Dave and Mike Petti, Tom Luongo, Pat Shannon, Rich Mullane. Chris Jones, and Dana Epstein. By finishing first in their division, M.C.’s mathematicians qualified to compete in the Championship held at Randolph High School. The team won the Division State Championship by three points. The “Mathletes” then journeyed on to Wor¬ cester to take part in a New England championship. They missed a trophy here by just three points. L-R: P. Shannon. M. Petti. D. Brown, D. Petti, T. Luongo. 137 Camera Club Under moderator Bro. Joseph Britt, the camera club was extremely helpful to the school community this“year. Each Monday afternoon president Tom Luongo met with the members of the club to discuss the upcoming events and assign people to take pictures of them. The pictures which were taken were used for all sorts of activities including the school paper, advertising of the musical and school plays, decorating the gym, and finally for this edition of the Lance. Without the camera club and their pictures, this yearbook probably wouldn’t be finished yet. 138 Work Crew Every day at 2:05, when all the other students are on their way home, or participating in extracurricular activi¬ ties, a group of hard-working, dedicated students remain to clean up the messes which are left behind, under the super¬ vision of Bro. Plunket. Very few people realize how impor¬ tant their jobs are in keeping the school clean, so we, the Lance staff, have decided to give them our recognition, thank them, and ask them to keep up the hard work. Curtain Call Co. Drama is definitely on the boom here at M.C. The Curtain Call Co., as it has been named, has accomplished a lot in this past year and has many plans for the future. Under moderator- director Mr. Joseph Gray, the club put on two excellent plays, Our Town and Curtain Going Up, with the help of girls from Girl’s Catholic, Pope John and Malden High. They went around to most of the English classes and did a skit which was a take-off from their second play. They elected officers: John Touchette — president Stu Rotman — vice president Steve DiGurski — treasurer Mike Cryan — secretary. For next year they plan to enter a drama competition and become part of the International Thespian Society. Kathy Obremski and John Touchette 140 Stu Rotman Carole Wall and Mark DeLong Grace MacDonald and David Silverman Student Council The Student Council was a dynamic group of individuals whose concern was for their fellow classmates and the improvement of their school community. Through the problems and controversies of the year one true tone rang out; mem¬ bers of the Student Council were not in it for themselves but for the people who elected them. The list of activities brought to Malden Catholic by the Student Council is very large, therefore only a general idea of what the Student Council did can be given with the allotted space. There were pep rallies, intramurals with Girl’s Catholic, and the pep club for the athletic. For the cultured there were trips to various museums and blood drives to keep us all a bit depleted. For our social lives there were five dances, a Blue and Gold Semi-Formal, and probably the best Senior- Junior Prom that Malden Catholic has ever known. Finally, let us not forget the two full scale food drives and some of the finest and more captivating masses the religious committee has ever executed. The people on whom most of the work fell were the Executive Board. These gentlemen deserve credit for their creativity, service, and fine leadership through¬ out their school career. They are: President — James Pellegrini Religious Chairman — John Garofano Vice President - Brain Fisher Cultural Chairman — James Adams Junior Councilor — Mark Scapicchio Athletic Chairman — Alex Martignetti Secretary Treasurer — Richard Clark Social Chairman — Patrick Downing Sophomore Councilor — Richard Nullane These are the people who ran the activities, but programs like Big Brother and Freshman Orientation could never have been accomplished without the over¬ whelming aide of the concerned students of Malden Catholic. In all actuality, these students were what made up the essence of M.C. Student Council, and to them as people we are eternally indebted. The prom was held at Chateau de Ville, Saugus. The time and planning put into the event by the prom committee certainly paid off. Everybody had a wonder¬ ful time. The evening was completely organized. On April 28, 1978, the elegantly dressed couples strolled up the huge staircase to be greeted and served a fruit punch. Following this, a deli¬ cious roast beef dinner was served. Entertainment for the eve¬ ning was provided by the group Ibis. Dancing was enjoyed by all the entire night, highlighted by the solo dance of the king and queen of the prom, Kevin McHugh and his date. c fnnuaf ffonzmznaznzznt On May 21, 163 Seniors entered the Malden Catholic Gym for the highlight of their high school career.
