The Old . . . And New . . . 3 Dedication You were so human. Brother Robertus Taking a friendly glass sometimes with us, Siding with us who would rescue this school From the coldness and the dreariness of village morality. You were like a traveler who brings a little box of sand From the wastes about the pyramids And makes them real and Egypt real. You were a part of and related to a great past, And yet you were so close to many of us. You believed in the joy of life. You did not seem to be ashamed of the flesh. You faced life as it is, And as it changes. Your influence weighed upon us, Brother Robertus. Seeing how your church had divined the heart, And provided for it, Through Peter the Flame, Peter the Rock. £ BROTHER PAUL CULLEN C.F.X., Assistant Headmaster MRS. JEAN BISHOP Typing, Secretary MRS. The Blocking of Mike McHugh and John Motta, springs Bill Herlihy for a short gain. Frank Sparrow follows S. Geddry for a first down against Archbishop Williams. The football team, which didn’t win a game, showed a loyalty and effort not found in many winning teams. The players deserve much credit for “sticking with it” during all the hardships and bad luck which occurred during the season. Unfor¬ tunately, the record did not typify the spirit which was conveyed by the team. They, however, represented their school very well. The new coaching staff, headed by Mr. William Ransom, along with the co-cap¬ tains, Pete Cavicchi and Loney Sparrow, showed the leadership which should be indicative of all athletes and coaches at Malden Catholic. Guards John Motta and Steve Geddry take advantage of a well- deserved rest. Quarterback Billy Herlihy in action. First-Year coach Fred Johnson not only made a successful debut, but also gave reason for hope in future seasons. Many sophomores were given the chance to play on the varsity, and this will prove invaluable in their junior and senior years. Among the laurels captured by this team were the Class A Catholic Tourney Championship, and the co-championship of the North Shore League. Although these accomplishments were won mainly by a great team effort Malden Catholic did have its share of spectacular individuals. Offensively, captain Bobby Reardon won the North Shore League Scoring Championship and was selected to the All-Scholastic Team. Joe Fidler finished second to Bobby and was also selected for All- Scholastic Honors. Both were named to the North Shore All-Star team. Likewise named as All-Stars were the leaders of the de fense. Goalie Bobby Conceison played ex¬ tremely well and was named as Most Valuable Player of the Catholic Tourney, and Paul DiPietro played solid defensive hockey in every game. The fine team effort was second only to the tremendous’ spirit displayed. Success has usually been synonymous with Malden Catholic hockey teams, and this year’s team proved to be no ex¬ ception. With an overall record of 8 wins and 10 losses, the team ended un in fourth place in the strong Catholic Conference. The hoopsters lost seven of the ten games by five points or less, which indicates the lack of good fortune on Malden Catholic’s side. The team was paced by co-capt. Pete Killion, who was selected to the All Catholic Team. Their success can be attributed also to the four other starters, Mike and Dennis McHugh, Jay Sweeney and Bill Herlihy. It was a very frustrating season, but M.C. spirit prevailed. Jay Sweeney from the line. Herlihy drives for a lay-up. TEAM OF 69: First row, left to right, Asst. Although the teams met with little success, as far as won and lost records are con¬ cerned, M. C. fared extremely well in the major meets. Led by Dan Moynihan, who set record after record in every meet and on every course that he ran, M. C. finished in the top third of all teams competing in the indoor and outdoor state meets. Coached by Mr. Peter Stipe, cross coun¬ try and indoor track, and Mr. William Lauffer, outdoor track, the runners proved themselves to be outstanding dedicated ath¬ letes throughout the year. Look out! 48 Dan Hynes crosses tape in State Meet. Uh! Charlie McCarthy qualifies for State Meet, as he runs second. 51 Baseball Even the mighty bat of Babe Ruth or the powerful arm of Dizzy Dean could not have salvaged one win for the M. C. “gashouse gang.” As M. C. commenced to compile the league’s record for strike outs and errors, it seemed evident to Coach Ransom and Capt. Tony Antenucci that it would be a disastrous season. Their suspicion was confirmed as M. C. blundered its way to a tremendous 0-18 record. “Oh somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright; The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light, And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout, But there is no joy at M. C., the baseball team has struck out.” 35 rj ' 4 ■ M Tennis Captain Frank Ricciardone and Junior Sam Ciulla led this year’s racket team. Coached by Brother Charles Foley, the team finished with an 0-6 record. Sam Ciulla proved to be the top singles player in the Catholic Conference when he finished undefeated. Chris Maher and Dan Haskard were the other Seniors on the team. 56 Golf Led by Co-Captains Frank Fama and Ricky McGaffigan and coached very capably by Mr. John Carroll, “Jack’s Pack” concluded the sea¬ son with a 1-8-1 record. Joe Panetta, Joe Leary, Rich Antonelli and Leo Green were the strong members of the “Pack.” V 57 JV Basketball Top tow, left to right, Leone, Bolger, Lupi, Marchant, Nelson, Romero, bot¬ tom row, left to right, Bennett, Sheri¬ dan, O’Neil, Antonelli, Gottholm, Worth. Cheerleaders The cheerleaders are more symbolic of the spirit at Malden Catholic than any other o ne group. The eleven representatives from Girls Catholic were the most faithful and ardent fans at all M. C. games. They never quit on the teams during some of the school’s darkest sports hours while at other times they rejoiced along with the players during their greatest triumphs. Their eager¬ ness and perseverance in their job was greatly appreciated by all connected in any way with the Malden Catholic Athletic Program. This signified the transition from old to new, which had begun 3 months earlier when the school doors opened in September. This dedication was the culmination of years of work, and gave particular tribute to those students and faculty who were to participate in the coming year. The ceremony began outside and included the blessing of the cornerstone by Richard Cardinal Cushing and the raising of the flag by members of the student council. As the ceremony moved inside, the school was blessed and then guest speakers joined in giving their congratulations. The already high spirits were given an added boost at the champagne reception. Thus, M.C. began another era in a new and revived atmosphere. A - Student Council Under the guidance of Brother George Willenbrink, the student coun¬ cil undertook the job of leading the activities in the new school. Presi¬ dent Joe Connelly headed the group of student representatives to one of its most successful years in the history of the school. Some of the achievements of the stu¬ dent council included: the acquisition of a smoking area, the art symposium, and many successful dances. Having the hard job of leadership in a new school, the student council handled the task with the old M.C. spirit. Next year’s student council will certainly have a difficult job of filling the shoes of SAC 69’. Brother George Willenbrink moderates members of the Student Council. Seated, left to right, Mike McHugh hirst V.P., Joe Connelly, President, Gary Jorden, Secretary, Paul Harrington, Second V.P., Dan Haskard Treasurer, and Mike Rufo, Historian. Crystal XCIX Back in the summer of ’68, when almost everyone was still enjoying their summer vaca¬ tion, the M.C. school newspaper had already begun plans for the coming year. Under the leadership of the editor-in-chief, Stephen Flanagan, the Crystal XCIX was a huge suc¬ cess at presenting the “happenings” around the school. Assisting him in the construction of the paper were the four page editors; Frank Fama, Vin Messina, Bob Conceison and Chris Maher. The paper itself relied upon the articles con¬ tributed by reporters throughout the student body. Exciting, informative and controversial, the Crystal XCIX was always an invaluable piece of work. Under the direction of Mr. Joseph Hayes, the students produced an evening of com¬ plete theatre, which left audiences spell¬ bound night after night. Involving 500 students from five dif¬ ferent schools, TTO offered a night of refreshing entertainment and gave all students an insight to the theatrical field. With the help of Brother Ronald and Brother John as TTO moderators, Joe Hayes built a production that far ex¬ ceeded the beliefs of the cast. The stu¬ dent body is forever grateful to Joe Hayes and his message: “Good evening ladies and gentleman” There’s no business like show business! ‘Limehouse Blues” “At the prom” “The brats” “Atlantic City” Bonnie and Clyde Calypso Carnival “There’s no business like show business.” Backstage 77 Drama In his second year as MC’s director Brother Ronald Santoro produced four ex¬ cellent plays, with the assistance of Brother John Conlon and Brother George Willen- brink. These plays were “A Marriage Pro¬ posal,” “Winter Interlude,” “On Baile’s Strand,” and the “Miser.” 78 T.V. Studio With television being the main communica¬ tion with people today, Malden Catholic insti¬ tuted its own system this year. Under the supervision of Brother Marcellus, WMCH in its initial year excelled in bringing both in¬ formation and entertainment to the student body. The main objective of the closed circuit t.v. s ystem was to get the student body involved in a new and exciting field. In this program, students had the opportunity to show their creativity as cameramen, technicians and writers. The acquisition of these skills, taught by Brother Marcellus, will undoubtedly prove beneficial in the later careers of many students. m Lance Under the capable leadership of Mr. Joseph Britt, the ten member “Lance” staff spent countless hours taking photographs, cropping pictures, and laying out various sections. Wallowing through the stacks of copy sheets and photos was our ruthless Editor-in- Chief Vincent Messina, followed closely behind by his trusty sidekick Bob Conceison and Rich Freccero. Comprising the remaining staff was the befuddled Bob Crosby, the scaleograph wizard Tom Endicott, the notorious Brian Breen, the infamous Bill Sarsfield, Denis “the Phantom” McDonald, Charles “the Blue Max” McCarthy and Baby Face Paul Bellacqua. Arts Symposium The annual Arts Symposium at M. C. is indeed a rarity among stu¬ dents in high school.
