Mr. Mayes we truly do appreciate all that you have done for us by trying to help us to understand that we were being cheated by the system. At times, some of us were disagreeable or even ungrateful, but you just slapped us on the back of the head and gave us the, Gordy Rule” - “Do it yourself fool Thanks we needed that! Whoever said that Joe Clark was an original must not have seen him taking notes from you. Some of us can't help but to believe that maybe you were taken away from us because you told us things that some would rather we not know. Now that we are about to take that step into the, “Cold, cruel world , we look at future students and shiver at the work that it will take for them to catch up. Thanks to your, “ТеШ а”, us, since our Sophomore year what was ahead, we used that time, some wisely some not so wisely. Yet we all love you! Thank you “Gordy” Ms. Shaketa Brown Vearbook Editor Class of 1989 и R | N C | P A L At this time | salute the members of the graduating class of June, 1989. With the assis- tance and support of your parents, you have persevered, struggled, and achieved. The ad- ministrative and instructional staffs have attempted to provide you with a quality education. We have made efforts to alter and rearrange your priorities. We have established levels of students expectations which we hoped would have prepared you to be productive mem- bers of society. You have accomplished a major objective in your young lives, graduation from high school. Don't allow yourself at this youthful age to be satisfied with this triumph. Set your sights for higher achievements. Allow your aspirations complete freedom. Permit only your individual potentials to dictate your limitations. Upon graduation from Malcolm X Shabazz High School you have become a distinguished member of the family and you are always welcome to return home. To the members of the Graduating Class of 1989, I wish you unlimit- ed success in your future endeavors. C ongratulations!! Charles D. Meadows RICHARD WILLIAMS MICHAEL V. DANIELS V I 4. HOW MANY OF YOU WILL BE READV FOR THE 90's2 Dr. King's Vision: “Has It Been Realized?” “No one can make you inferior without your consent.” That was a famous quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, and a very true one, | might add. I believe many great, black, leaders feel that way. This is why many of them try to make a difference. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one such man. Dr. King “had a dream” that the whole world would live as one with total equality. Not only did he envision this, he set out to make it a reality. He received racial remarks, he was stabbed, he was thrown in jail on more than one occasion, and then he was killed. To answer the question, “Has the dream been realized?”, obviously, not enough. Blacks are able to sit anywhere on the bus now, and we're able to be served in restaurants, just to name a few examples of things that Dr. King accomplished, but this doesn't hold true everywhere. There are still small towns in certain areas that still consider blacks inferior, and either won't serve them at all, or wait until all whites have been served first. Not enough blacks have realized the dream either. Instead of us sticking together, we're fighting and killing one another. I'm glad that we can all come together for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, but why does it only have to be on his birthday? We should be able to love one another and stand by one another 365 or 366 days of the year. Hopefully, something will be said or done very soon to help us realize that. Otherwise, Dr. King's dream will not be complete, and we will never “Reach the Mountain ” Kevin Danley Grade 12 MISS CALENDAR | fa | | Ik: ANDRE I HOUSE ἓν ΠΗ MR. She is currently President of the James C. White Tenants' Association. she is best know as the “РТА LADY” because she has been active in city, county, and state PTA since 1951. She is the past-President of the Essex County Council of PTAs. The Malcolm X Shabazz High School (formerly South Side) Community remembers her start with PTA at this school in 1961 during the tenure of Principal Fred Landolphi. She continues her goal of seeing that students are provid- ed with a quality education. She is particularly concerned about student achievement. A scholarship fund has been established in her name and she currently serves as a member of the Newark Board of Education. INEZ TRIPLIN as B.S.U. President ROBERT DOUGLAS speaking in class To Kiysha, I wish to you Ше best in the future. Three years with you and I knew you were going to be that special someone to me. The one and only sweetest young lady for that | know. No one can ever Бе better. | know the things you can do; going to school to learn and other things that you do best. | remember when | first saw you. | said to myself, “There goes someone who I would like to know.” Kiysha, you changed mv Ше when I saw you. You are the sweetest young lady | have ever loved. You're growing up now, and you are not a little baby anymore. Take one step at a time to find out what life is really about. You will always be my lady, and I will always love you just like the first day | met you. I wish that we can always be together for many years to come. May God bless you. From the one who loves you, Dion “Happy is the man with the level-headed son”, said the mother of a rebel. Lazy men are soon poor, hard workers get rich. A wise youth makes a way while the sun shines, but what a shame to see a lad who sleeps away his hour of opportunity. A wise man is glad to be instructed, but a self-sufficient fool falls flat on his face. A good man has firm footing, but a crook will slip and fall. A fool's fun is being bad; A wise man's fun is being wise. Disaster strikes like a cyclone and the wicked are whirled away, but the good man has a strong anchor. Evil men get rich for the moment, but the good man's reward lasts forever. A wise man gives good advice, but a rebel is destroyed by a lack of common sense. May the Class of '89 gets God's blessing Kevin Strigler Congratulations Kiysha, Success comes to those who strive. Always remember, with God all things are possible.
