Time to close the door on adolescence and open the door on maturity and adulthood. The life before you is uncertain. There will be hard and difficult times ahead. The present prosperity is but an illusion resting on a weak foundation. Your life is in your hands. Those of you who have worked hard to prepare yourselves, stand the best chance. Dedication, commitment and hard work still stand as the most durable keys to success. I hope you are ready to meet the challenge. I wish you well and may your troubles be few. Remember to always walk with pride and dignity. Do the best you can do. Be the best you can be no matter what you choose to be. Your future call — spread your wings and fly into tomorrow. Throughout their lives they will have to make hundreds of decisions which will affect the degrees of success or failure they experience. By learning how to select the best choices, students can have more control over what happens to them. To assist students in developing their decision making skills, the Guidance Department offers numerous opportunities for them to make decisions about resources and about themselves as they examine choices and select one that is the most desirable. Hopefully, by developing these skills, our students are preparing to lead lives where they know how to set their own goals, make good decisions and accept ownership for their own successes and failures. above — Bushra Shabazz and Robert Stratford listen as recruiter explains curriculum ottered at Wilbertorce University in Ohio. right — The nursing program at the College of St. Elizabeth is explained to Yvonne Fowler and Echell White. 126 English Department “To Be or Not to Be” Since it is neces ary for individuals to become effective, productive citizens in this democratic society, it is imperative that they develop functional competency in the area of communication skills. Under the leadership of Mrs. Edna Bailey, the English Department strives to provide each student with a basic, practical and functional knowledge of the English language and its literature by the time he or she graduates. At each level, the English program builds on and incorporates the programs of previous grade levels. Recognition of the fundamental position of communication skills and the fluid transfer of knowledge are encouraged by liaison programs with the library. Science Department Test Tubes, Flask and Beacons Great discoveries and improvements involve the imagination of many minds. I may be given credit for having blazed the trail, but when I look at the subsequent developments. I feel the credit is due to others rather than to myself.” This statement was made by Alexander Graham Bell many years ago. but it rings true today as one contemplates the many minds and vast expenditures involved in the effort to conquer space and the seemingly vain attempt to defeat the killer, cancer. Such considerations impel Science Chairman Harold Wharton and his faculty to lend their efforts towards developing quality students in the area of science. The courses are designed to provide fundamental training in the sciences for students to meet requirements for graduation, as well as more advanced technical training for those college prep students who may pursue a career in natural science. right — Maurice Hawkins mounts a stode in biology class Debbie Williams (left) and Caroline Cam weigh chemical matter on the tr ne beam balance. 128 left — Travis Duhart (left) and Charles Wall team up in Chemistry below — Maurice Hawkins gets introduced to using the microscope. The main goal of Department Chairman Irving Mitzman and his teachers is to help students to develop and clarify skills that will allow them to make constructive contributions to their own families, homes, communities and personal lives — both present and future. The traditional Home Economics courses are offered, in addition to Child Development, which allows students to work with youngsters in a nursery. Various Industrial Arts classes are available, including Auto Shop, where students actually learn to service cars. All Practical Arts instructors are involved in the teaching of Social Growth to all freshmen. This course was devised to help 9th graders make the transition from grammar school to high school. Students are taught to understand themselves and how to relate to others. A plan was implemented to have students construct a little house in the shop. The first step was to have each student design and construct a scale model house. Once this was completed, floor plans were drawn to build an 8x8 house, complete with windows, doors, walls, floor and roof. At press time, the students had completed the foundation and a few exterior walls. If funding permits. Social Studies Department Exploring Our Nation’s History As the world grows smaller and the inter-relationship between cultures becomes more complex, the Department of Social Studies finds itself taking the duties more seriously as it goes about the task of representing several integrated curricular concerned with one aspect or another of human relations. The knowledge of understanding of the background and present behavior of man. as well as his future actions. is the main objective of students taking courses in this department. It is easily seen that a knowledge of the courses offered in this department can be of great value to the students in understanding himself and his place in society, as well as understanding others and their places in society. Knowledge of man and his reaction to society is useful in almost every phase of life in practically all types of vocations — government employment, civic work, clerical work, sales positions, and most certainly in the professional fields of education. medicine, law and theology. The primary concern of Department Chairman, Jack Korbman. is to create an atmosphere where students are willing to work to achieve their optimum development. in addition to receiving credits for those courses that are required for graduation. right — Mr. Davis uses the globe to iiustrate the latitude and longitude ot Ethiopia to Karen Epps below — Robin Darby and Lavona Moore work diligently to complete the map of Africa 134 Math Department Computers Mix Into Math Math is both a tool subject and a pure science. Students are offered the opportunity to acquire skills which will increase efficiency of movement and enjoyment of leisure and contribute to the maintenance of health. The philosophy of education through the physical — rather than of the physical — demands a program which has a wide range of activities rich in opportunities or self-expression. The desire to create this language appears to be universal. It shows itself in all societies and in all ethnic divisions of mankind — black or white, red or yellow. It has become a very part of man's need to impose his will upon the universe: to bring order out of chaos: to endow his moments of highest awareness with enduring form and substance. Under the leadership of Mr. Bauer. Department Chairman, art and music at Malcolm X Shabazz have come a long ways from their primitive stages, but they have retained their connection with the spring of human feelings, with the accents of joy and sorrow, tension and release. The Fine Arts courses offered at Malcolm X Shabazz allow students to continue in the traditioin of using music and art as a language that transcends the barriers men put up against each other. right — Sen or Claude Barnes is considered to be the school's top art student n Mrs McNeil and some Advanced Chorus members prepare for the annual Christmas Concert. 140 Foreign Language Department Making Foreign Languages Familiar The influx of students to our area from South and Central America and the Carnbean makes the teaching of foreign languages imperative. One of its main projects, this year, was to raise funds to assist the starving Ethiopians. A goal was set to raise enough money to feed 25 children for a month. Staff and students were encouraged to contribute and collections were also made in the community. The drive was successful and $475 was contributed to the Newark Metropolitan African Relief Fund in the name of Malcolm X Shabazz High School. Some of the other SGA projects were to help publicize the Choral Christmas Concert, form volunteer groups to clean the halls during lunch periods, read morning announcements over the public address system, use bulletin boards to disperse current information, and serve as hosts and hostesses for functions at the school. Selecting a cover, developing a theme, and recording stories and photos of events of the year that will become more precious in the years to come proved to be a very time consuming task. Many lunch periods were missed: after school hours and mornings that upperclassmen could sleep late were sacrificed to produce a book that would represent the time, pride, talent, and dedication that was utilized while putting it together. Having broken her right ankle in a pre season game. Donnell was forced to watch the first 10 regular season games from the bench. The team suffered a 52-41 defeat from Paterson East Side in the Paterson East Side Holiday Shootout, and a 56-64 loss to the Newark West Side Rough Riders during regular season — their first lost in the city of Newark and in the Dog House in five years.
