Whenever there was a senior function. Ms. Carmichael was always wiling to help in any way possible. She donated her time and energy for the senior cause. Ms. Carmichael took total responsibility for the Royal Showcase of Beauty and talent (the contest for choosing class queens). She has also, this year, taken on the responsibility of the Recorder, the school newspaper Most important, she has for the past 13 years, taken full responsibility for presenting the juniors and seniors with a show put on by Charles Stewart and Good News Ms. Carmichael was the class advisor in 1979. so she really knows the importance of faculty cooperation and participation with the senior class. She has given us her all in our four years here at Malcolm X Shabazz and we greatly appreciate it. Because she has given so much of herself to us, we take this time to dedicate the 1984 OPTIMIST to Ms Rosalind Carmichael. It is given to a teacher who is more to us than just an instructor. This person is one who really cares about teaching, and yet is also a friend to the students. With this in mind the Senior Class is proud to dedicate the 1984 Optimist to Ms Erma Lowe, as an expression of gratitude for oil of her support and guidance. Ms Lowe graduated from Wiiam Patterson College with a Bachelor's degree in Education and later received a Master in Administration Supervision. She presently resides in East Orange. New Jersey. Ms Lowe teaches Geometry. Computer Math and Trigonometry. She is a teacher who is looking for comprehension from her students. Ms. Lowe goes beyond the call of duty to help a student She is active in the school and the community. Ms Lowe has been at Malcolm X Shabazz (South Side) since 1965. Valerie Hammond and Margaret Robinson performed as class advisors above and beyond the call of duty. It is with great appreciation that we say thanks for the smiles that you gave in happy times and the tears that you shed in times of despair. We are deeply and forever indebted to them for the guidance they gave us through our junior and senior years and for the guidance that we are sure they will continue to give in all the years to come. It is the general consensus that lifelong friends are made between students while attending high school. It is the senior class consensus that lifelong friends have been made between each and every senior and our class advisors. To Vaiene Hammond and Margaret (Cookie) Robinson, we love you and we thank God for being blessed with your assistance and belief in our each and every endeavor. Elolonge Epanya Yondo CLASS ADVISORS 7 Mrs. Betty Prezzy Bryant, a home economics teacher at Malcolm X Shabazz. has taken on the responsibility of being yearbook advisor. Since having come to us. she has become known to be a person of great persistence, as well as one who dedicates much of her time and energy to the student body — academically and socially Although she is a neophyte as a yearbook advisor, she is giving considerable time to developing the 1984 Optimist into a yearbook in which we can have pride. This involves staff meetings several days after school as well as lunch periods, meeting at the school on vacation or weekends to prepare to meet deadlines, and also conferring with editors at night by phone Luckily for the senior class. Mrs. Bryant has the persistence and determination not to be associated with failure . Therefore, we. the 1984 OPTIMIST Staff, are very pleased to be a part of the production of a yearbook that we can treasure and be proud of in the years to come Anthony Tucker Assistant Editor-in-Chief 8 YEARBOOK ADVISOR CPTIMIST STAFF ED4TOWNCHCF CRYSTAL WARMACK Fimr ’% MESSAGE In our preparation of the yearbook, we always kept in mind the dying spirit of the bulldog. With this in mind we attempted to include things that in previous years had been overlooked, such as definition of an Optimist, and a tribute to Malcolm X We also kept in mind that we were a part of a whole and becase of this fact we knew that we must produce a yearbook that would be appreciated by the senior class as a whole Patience was not one of our greatest virtues. We fought a great deal of the time and tried to compromise the rest. There were deadlines to meet which made people on edge and very irritable Through all the discomforts of working under constant supervision, the “1984 Optimist Yearbook Staff managed to pull through and deliver the best yearbook possible We. the 1984 Optimist Staff take pride in our finished product and we hope the Malcolm X Shabazz Class of 1984 is just as pleased with it. Nebraska At an early age. Malcolm moved to Lansing. Michigan with his parents, both of whom were tragically lost to him in childhood. His father was run over by a street car and his mother was committed to a mental institution. Leaving school after the eighth grade. Malcolm made his way to New York. He began selling and using drugs, turned to burglary and was sentenced to prison in Massachusetts for 10 years in 1946. While in prison he adopted the beliefs of the Block Muslims, a religious movement which believed in the separation of the races. During his incarceration, he re-educated himself by copying and studying a page of the dictionary each day. until he had gone through the entire dictionary After his release from prison in 1952. Malcolm X became a leading spokesman for the Black Muslims. In 1964. following a disagreement with Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Black Muslims. Malcolm formed a rival group, the Organization of Afro-Amencan Unity (OAAU). Malcolm X had a profound influence on both blacks and whites, and was considered to be one of the most fiery and controversial blacks of the 20th century. Many blacks felt that he was a man of the people, experienced in the ways of the streets rather than the pulpit or college campus, which traditionally have provided the preponderance of black leaders Many young whites responded to Malcolm's blunt, colorful language and unwillingness to retreat in the foce of hostility. Malcolm X was assassinated in New York City on February 21. 1965. Three men. including two Black Muslims, were sentenced to life in prison for his murder Although he was killed before the OAAU was firmly established, his followers interpreted his death as a sacrifice for the black revolution and he quickly became a martyr of that movement. He was buried as El Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, the name he hod taken in 1964 after making h«s holy pilgrimage to Mecca. H I MALCCLM Oh beautiful, black martyr Cut down by guns hold in black hands. You and they, proclaiming the worth of being black. But they, somehow deaf to tones of truth Issuing from your golden black throat. Feared for their song of hate And in jealousy borne tor your mingled melodies Of brotherhood, black brotherhood And strength, violent if need be With pride of real negritude. Cut you down Were you to be the leader Of a new flock from the dark skinned nation. The mastermnd of preasioned fight Long grounded by fledgkngs Groveling in shadows of white fathers? You were the brmant embodiment Of elusive manhood. Those who are less Negate your death and fat to acknowledge Righteousness felt of your logic Oh beautiful, black martyr Cut down by black hands. Held down by fttle white rands. Send back your song to a centixy wrong Yet seeking one of your golden throat Your growing notes of truth. Although he didn't win a championship during his tenure as coach. Mr Finch regards his years coaching with great pride. He has worked with quite a few fine young men during those fifteen years, and that alone has made it worth the time and energy he spent coaching Mr Finch has had the pleasure of seeing many former members of his teams go on to college on football scholarships, and two. Keith W«IS (Pittsburg Steelers defensive end) and Reggie Brown (Los Angeles Express running back), have become professional football players. Being an integral part of those accomplishments would make anyone feel proud. Coach Finch's retirement signals the end of an era. and the Bulldog family wants him to know we will always remember his spirit, determination. and dedication with love Ms. Hammond took over the position as softbai head coach from Ms. Annette Williams in 1978 after the two had coached a year of softball together. She has now decided to step down from her throne and allow Mr . Murray to reign over the second ranked (1983) softball team. Ms Hammond attributes her decision to resign from coaching to the fact that she wants to spend more time with her son and also because she (mistakenly feels that she has given all that she could give to the girts. She feels that they deserve someone better who could give them that boost that they needed to make them No. 1. She will be greatly missed by all out on the field. Following a very impressive 1982-83 undefeated season (29-0). Ms. Annette Williams retired from coaching. For four consecutive years, she was head basketball coach for the Lady Bulldogs Coach Wilams. with an overall record of 102 wins and 9 losses, led the Lady Bulldogs to seven different titles. Her team captured three consecutive, undefeated city titles, two county titles, one Group III Section I Divisional title, and ultimately one state title. Notwithstanding such an outstanding record. Ms Williams has proven that she was also a winner of a different sort. Through her guidance and assistance, seven of her Lady Bulldogs have received scholarships and are now attending various colleges and universities around the country Her success can be credited with her willingness to be mother, friend, teacher ond coach. Certainly, we, at Malcolm X Shabazz. will remember this remarkable lady for many years to come We salute her with many, many thanks. PROMOTION RETIRED COACHES 51 IN A TOiat TICN MS. There is a perfectly good reason to ponder about this world in which we live. What wil it be like for you, for me. for us? In a great measure, it can be what you make of it. However, to shape the world, it takes both knowledge and ski. It is now time for us to embark on the next phase of our journey to maturity Once again, knowledge and skis are needed here, also So. we must take advantage of al open opportunities. Injustice is st with us. and we must get around it. The fore shadow of your future is evidenced by the present. Learn now and you learn for the future. The absence of any one of these can cause inadequate or incomplete goal fulfillment. It is our goal to a d students in knowing who they are by developing positive feelings about themselves. We encourage them to believe in themselves and foster the idea that they are worthy of success and can succeed. Additionally, we guide students to an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. By doing this, they are better able to define their values and are able to begin to see how these values will affect that particular lifestyle that they choose. We strive to aid students in realizing that they have alternatives. Therefore, knowing the importance of making good decisions gathering and assimilating information are valuable tools in their decision making processes. For students, familiarity with the various occupational clusters is also an important part of the guidance program. Finally, we try to prepare students for accepting any temporary failures that they may encounter. That's a vital part of life. We foster the idea that life's little set backs are merely that - set backs. We try to instill in our students the desire to set long and short range goals in the hope that these goals will bring them rewarding and lasting successes.
