ALSO ESSEX COUNTY CHAMPS CITY CHAMPS PONY CLASSIC CHAMPS GROUP II DIVISIONAL NEW JERSEY STATE CHAMPION GROUP II] ! Malcolm X Shabazz High School Newark New Jersey 1983 NOTHING STAYS THE SAME. EVERYONE WILL CHANGE, I . 7 CAUSE THAT’S THE WAY OF TIME NOTHIN’ AND NO ONE GOES UNCHANGED. THERE ARE NOT MANY THINGS IN LIFE YOU CAN BE SURE OF. EXCEPT; RAIN COMES FROM THE CLOUDS, SUN LIGHTS UP THE SKY, AND HUMMING BIRDS DO FLY. II WINTER TURNS TO SPRING, A WOUNDED HEART WILL HEAL, BUT NEVER MUCH TOO SOON, YES, EVERYTHING MUST CHANGE. mm m WORDS OF WISDOM TO THE CLASS OF 1983 You're like a seed planted in unfertile soil, fighting to grow in an uncertain world. You're reaching out to be understood, to gain knowledge, and to be loved. Like a tree, you are ever growing and changing with the seasons — The Seasons of Your Life. You’re not the same person you were five years ago. and you won’t be the same person five years from now. Your life will be measured by your efforts, commitments, dedication, and your will to work. 1 hope that we, at Malcolm X Shaba . ., have given you the tools you need to become a success. Success is measured not in what you become, but how well you do the job you have chosen. I sincerely hope that life is good to you. life is kind to you, and life allows you a multitude of opportunities to reach your goal. We, at Malcolm X Shabazz. tried to do our job: the rest is up to you. I wish you the best, and may God light your way. Your Principal, Gordon Mayes OUR PRINCIPAL Mr. Gordon Mayes SENIOR CLASS ADVISOR 16 Mrs. Betty Bryant SENIOR CLASS ADVISOR 17 Mrs. Dcloris Dawson A flower, just a flower, so helpless, innocent and young. When entering the world, its form will change, it will learn how to survive by use of the water and sun. In time, buds will spout, its petals will open and a new life each day will begin. It will see times changing, people passing and many new open. Now just like the flower, a freshman begins exploring a new world unknown. Then not realizing how fast the time has passed, he has graduated and now is alone. Each year that goes by the freshman, sophomore, now junior will grow until he reaches a point in his life where he may not know’ which way to go. But like the flower, each day is a new life and the student will change even more, until high school is behind him, his dreams are before him. and he goes after those things he has waited for. So to all the gullible, impressionable little flowers, I caution you further still, beware of poison water, yet welcome waters flow and in time you will become wiser and like the little flower you will grow. WILLIAMS Vice-Principal GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT Malcolm X Shabazz is fortunate to have a large staff of concerned guidance counselors to complement its faculty. The main function of guidance is counseling an interaction in which one person, the counselor endeavors to help another person, the student, become more effective in dealing with life. The major area of concern are personal problems, program of studies planning, academic concerns, post high school planning, and career development. MR. FENDRICK MRS. DOWDY 67 MRS. MEANS Chairperson r i ENGLISH In order for an individual to become an effective and productive citizen in a democratic society, he or she must develop functional competency in the area of communication skills. The late Lyndon B. Johnson went a step further when he stated: Today the cost of failure to communicate is not silence or serenity, but destruction and disillusion. The English Department at Malcolm X Shabazz High School strives to provide each student with a basic, practical, and functional knowledge of the English language by the time the student graduates. At each level the Fnglish program builds on and incorporates the programs of the previous grade levels. MRS. DUNHAM MRS. JONES MRS. POLI AK MS. BURNETT MS. CARMICHAEL MR MOORE 69 ENGLISH 70 MRS BENNETT MRS. DAVIS MRS. KING SOCIAL STUDIES The major aim of the Social Studies Department is to educate our students to participate in our Democracy and make whatever changes modem conditions demand that are consistent with the basic principles and values of our society. GILENSON SCIENCE Wc believe that in order to understand ourselves and the world in which we live—a world in which almost every aspect of our lives is touched by technology, it is necessary to attain some degree of literacy in science. We further believe that it is incumbent upon science teachers to cultivate interest in. provide information about, and lay a firm foundation for job opportunities, or advanced study in the sciences. MRS. HARGROVE MR AMBROSE MR. SCOTT MRS. THOMPSON 74 MR. WHARTON Omirperson MR CARANGELO MR. OXFORD MR. COOK MS. ESTEVEZ 75 MATHEMATICS The primary goal of the Mathematics Department is excellence in mathematics education for all students. The total program provides sequences of courses for students of different abilities and interests. The general mathe matics sequence is directed toward a study of basic skills and their application; the intermediate mathematics course concerns itself with both a study of college preparatory mathematics and reinforcement of basic skills; the college preparatory program prepares students for freshmen college courses in finite mathematics. I.OWE MR SHAROKH FOREIGN LANGUAGE We believe that all our students are entitled to the academic and pragmatic advantages that foreign language study can offer. We, therefore, believe that appropriate language courses should be available to all our students, and that where necessary, these courses should be modified to best meet special needs. In this way, the Foreign Language Department can best contribute to the growth of our young people as students and as independent and productive citizens in our society. MRS. STEVENSON MRS. LAYTON MR BAUER Chairperson MUSIC MS. WOOD MR. JOHNSON MR. HARRIS ART BUSINESS The growth in the number of positions for Secretaries, Computer Occupations and Accountants during the next ten years is expected to be greater than all other job markets. We want Malcolm X Shaba . , students to be ready to fill many of these positions. Therefore, our Department offers courses in Stenography 1 and II. Bookkeeping I and II. Secretarial Practices, Business Law. and a number of other classes which have been designed to prepare our graduates for employment in the world of business; or further educational experiences. MRS. MILLER MS. MCKNIGHT MISS AYRES MRS. PARKER 80 MRS. LEWIS Chairperson MR K1VET MS. NOLAN MS. HOWARD MR. CF.RATO PHYSICAL EDUCATION For the department of Physical Education at Malcolm X Shabazz, the mind is just as important as the body. Phys. Ed. classes provide activities which allow for the develop ment of both strength and coordination, but a learning process is also involved. Students learn the fundamentals of sports. But aside from students learning histories, rules, and safety practices, teachers encourage, on an individual level, the development and perfection of specific skills particular to an activity. Our Phys. Ed. teacher makes gym class more than a fun way to stay in shape. 81 MRS. ROYAL MR. DOWNING '4tXj MR. FLOYD MR. LISSNER MR. BROVACO Omirperson MR. FINCH MS. McKNICHT MR. KING VONY MS.
