PJ + m EJ MESSAGE TO CLASS OF 1982 The class of 1982, like the many other classes before it, will enter a troubled society over- wrought by unemployment, inflation and crime. These monsters threaten the success of all graduating seniors across the United States, but they pose a particular threat to those who will graduate from high schools such as Mal- colm X Shabazz. To confront the problem of unemployment, inflation and crime, when one is just starting out, can easily cause a person to develop a distorted concept of life and may even cause him to give up his life's aspiration before he has honestly attempted to pursue them. There is no doubt that in all probability, the members of the class of 1982 will find it very difficult to find employment; even if they are able to find a job, salaries may not be sufficient to take care of their needs because of inflation. Miniorities are beginning to recognize more than ever before, that training beyond high school is absolutely necessary in order to in- crease their chances for a good job and a better way of life. As a graduate of the class of 1982, your ability to obtain and hold a job will have much to do with how valuable you are to your employer. Workers with only minimal skills are abundant and easily dispensed of, while those with higher skills and college training are less numerous and consequently are more in de- mand. The real way to success lies in how valuable you make yourself to the world. Continuous life-long education is the path you should take if you truly wish to increase the value of your existance for yourselves and others. Better times are coming and when they do, will you, the members of the 1982 Senior Class be able to meet the challenge? Mr. James L. Barrett, Jr. Principal Mr. James L. Tw Tina Derios Captain Co PEN + 53 Football The Malcolm X Shabazz football team ended their season on a positive note beating Weequahic High School, by a score of 8-6. The win over Weequahic before over 6,000 fans made the disappointing sea- son a lot easier to take. The game was decided late in the fourth quarter when Shabazz took the ball at their own 30 yard line, and with a perfectly executed drive, marched 70 yards. Senior quarterback Derrick Young scored the winning touchdown with 26 sec- onds remaining. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 3-3 record in interconference play, and 4-5 overall. The Bull- dogs lost their first two games 14-0 to Valisburg, and 19-7 to Central. Shabazz's first points of the year came in the Central game, as Junior Anthony Og- lesby returned a kickoff 95 yards and Willie Mayes added the extra point. In the third game the Bull- dogs would not be denied as they romped over Paterson Kennedy by the score of 20-0. In this game the defense led by Vic Foster, Byron Crawford, Ron- nie Guyton, Anthony Oglesby and Willie Mayes sparkled as it held Paterson to just 43 total yards. The next two games produced loses which should have been victories, as Shabazz lost to Barringer 2-0, and Paterson Eastside 8-6. Games 6 and 7 produced blowouts as Shabazz defeated West Side 25-6 and Eastside High 21-0. The offense was spectacular in both games, rolling up nearly 500 yards in total offense, as Derrick Young handed off th backs Eric Barden, George Mayes, and Carlos Farmer. Young also threw touchdown passes to Darryl Williams and Craig Dunn. Game 8 was a total disaster as the Bulldogs lost to undefeated Clifford Scott High 20-0. Game 9 was no secret as Shabazz beat Weequahic, Thanksgiving Day in the Soul Bowl. On a final note, the football team would like to inform the student body that assistant, Coach Mr. Carl Evans, has announced his retirement. The team would like to thank Mr. Evans for his devotion, love and determination throughout the years he coached.
