19 79 OPTIMIST Malcolm X Shabazz High School Newark New Jersey UNITY IS POWER The class of 1979 has that BULLDOG spirit . . . in sunshine and in rain . . . 9 . . . we’ll always be together. 16 TABLE OF CONTENTS Opening ........................................I Dedication ....................................18 Faculty .......................................22 Seniors ...................................... 38 Advisors ......................................92 Baby Pictures .................................94 Sports ........................................98 Clubs S Activities ......................... 130 Dedication The Malcolm X. Shabazz Senior Class proudly dedicates its 1979 yearbook to three outstanding educators: Mr. Charles Stewart. Mrs. Stephaine Arrington, and Ms. Belinda Goode. These educators exemplify all of the positive characteristics that make a teacher unforgetable. They have a firm knowledge of their subject matter; they are energetic, conscientious, hard-working, honest and down to earth. Most important of all. though, these three individuals are serious educators who attempt to develop independent Black and Hispanic minds capable of controlling their own destinies. To these three outstanding teachers, we say Thank you, for your dedication, love, and concern. We will never forget you. We learn from your actions We grow from your strength We become because you care Just be We will profit. 18 Mr. Charles Stewart 19 Mrs. Stephaine Arrington 20 Ms. Belinda Goode Principal PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE TO THE SENIOR CLASS Personally I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate each and every member of the 1979 Graduating Class on your successfully completing four years of high school. Perhaps you do not realize it. but high school graduation is one of the most important milestones in your life. It is this milestone that most successful people must pass before they begin to enter any respectable area of employment and therefore high school graduation should not be taken lightly. Here at Malcolm X Shabazz High School, over a four-year period, we have attempted to provide you with an education which will enable you to appreciate and better understand the world in which we live. Hopefully you will be now able to leave Malcolm X Shabazz High School and begin making successful lives for yourselves through immediately going on to college or by finding a good job or possibly both. We also hope that we have taught you to better understand yourselves and to be proud of what and who you are. We want you to believe that you play an important role in society and hopefully we have provided you with all of the ingredients necessary to enable you to live a meaningful fulfilled life. It has always been my view that the feeling of self fulfillment and purpose are the most important things a high school can give its students and if you are fortunate enough to have received them, you have one of the greatest rewards a person can ever receive. Some people think of wealth as being extremely important, but what good is wealth if you lack self worth and purpose? What good is wealth if people around you do not appreciate and respect you? What good is wealth if your life is so confused that you are never at peace with yourself? In short, let not the amount of money you have be the measure of your success, but rather let those positive feelings you have about yourself be the deciding factor. Once this attitude is developed, prosperity and a comfortable way of life will follow automatically. Best wishes to all! Sincerely. James L. Barrett. C Some Of The Best College Students Are Veterans. Not every young man or woman is ready to take full advantage of college right out of high school. Some make far better students at 21 than they would have at 18. Some need time to learn more about themselves. And others about what they want to do with their lives. Today s Army offers them this time. Time to train, travel, meet people, and learn a skill. Time to understand the value of responsibility with good starting pay. $419 a month before deductions. And there is also the opportunity to start a college program during off-duty hours in the Army. With the Army paying up to 75% of the tuition for approved courses. CALL ARMY SERGEANT TOM WILSON 372-0232 Join the people who’ve joined the Army. 157 When it's your turn to graduate, you wear your cap and gown for only a few brief hours... but you can wear your class ring always.
