There were six divisions-the oratorical, humorous, national, dramatic, extemporaneous speeches, and the one-act plays. There were over forty students tried out in these contests and each one benefited by his efforts. The contestants were eliminated to three in each of these dixisions, and the final elimination was held at the First Ward Chapel to see who would represent Malad in the sub-dis- trict contest which was held at Mfalad. The winners at the First Ward were Gladys Sorenson in the humorous readings, Glenn Thomas in oratory, Conley Thomas in national oratory, Kelvin Sharp in the extemperaneous speeches, and Mary D. Thomas in dramatics. Malad did not enter the one-act plays. The sub-district was held at Malad this year. The schools represented were Preston, Montpelier, Paris, and Malad. The contests were held on Friday, March l4. The high school was dismissed so that the students might attend the contests. After the storm of the battle had cleared, it was found that Malad representatives had won in four of the five contests they had entered. The humorous readings and oratorical contests were held in the morning. Gladys Sorenson won the humorous division with her selection, The Wedding. Glenn Thomas won the oratorical divison with the oration What Think Ye of Christ? ln the after- noon, Conley Thomas won in the national oratorical contest with his oration on The Origin of the Constitution. The dramatic reading was won by a young lady from Preston. Although the judge did not place second and third, we feel that the Malad representative placed a very close second with her reading, Lilac Time. Malad was the only school represented in the extemporaneous speeches, Kelvin Sharp being her representative. He gave a speech on The Economic Employment of Time. ln the evening the one-act plays were given. Preston won in this contest with the play Grandma Pulls the String. After the contests a banquet was held for the contestants at the Great Nor- thern Hotel. A short talk was given by each of the winners. These contestants participated in the district contest at Pocatello and Mary D. Thomas got first in Dramatics, Kelvin Sharp first in extemporaneous speak- ing, and Glenn Thomas first in oratory. The other two received honorable men- tion, The M. H. S. was represented at the State Contest held at Burley, Mary D. Thomas placed second in dramatics, this being the second time for Malad placing at the State Contest in five years. Kelvin Sharp received honorable mention in extemporaneous. . - -BY KELVIN SHARP.
