Superintendent L. A. Thomas gave us a hearty welcome and we proceeded to businessq Walclomer Camp and Glenn Williams were the first steering pilots and on we flew. As the snow fell, the propellers weakened so Henry Noble and Virgil jones took the wheel. Through the next two years, sympathy, love of beauty and innocence and pride sponsored our choice of leaders and Henry Noble and Bettylliing sat in the cushioned seats while Gladys and Betty championed the Mirror and the Prom. The failures remain to tell the story or our prob- lems and difficulties. Some few are mammas or pappas . The rest of us push on with LaPreal Blais- dell and Glen Williams. .a M IS50 f - Q N X- T- '-- , ' , -- , A ' 1' ', was.- . V i 0 ' . xx .' s L x , '- X I, . They were dumb, as all Freshmen are, but not the kind too dumb to learn in time, They picked the dumbest one of the group to try and inspire them, Dahrl Evans by name. Well, he did well with such a dumb bunch to inspire him-but he had to keep with the group. The fellow who took his place the second semester was too dumb to have a name-guess I won't mention what he was call- ed. To make a short story long, they went through the first year only to have three years left.. Here you are, back again, eh? Well what are you going to do now? You have learned your lesson-that is-to get your lessons. You can select a leader now because all are not so dumb as they were a year ago. Cl guess they selected a leader, but can't say for sure, as no record was kept of such occurrences that might have happenedj You are beginning to take part in events. Your minds are making fair progress. Well, you can say now that a long story is becoming short- er-only two more years left in which to establish yourselves. We are now juniors. We are confronted by some of the gravest problems that ever met the students' intelligence--the publishing of the Annual and the Prom. Our leaders, first Ward Thomas and then Percy Hall, lead us on with jayne jones bossing the Annual. ln the events of the school we rank high. Many of our worthy members help to represent the football team. Some have followed other lines, but all in all we have become worthy students of the M. H. S. We hope that this doesn't reflect on any of its members On the level ,though, the class that booked up with Nlalad High this year is a pretty lively one. The girls are especially enthusiastic and proved their skill in athletics in the games which they played. The boys weren't to be downtrodden, so quite a few of them turned out for track and other activities. Both sexes had a large percent of representation in the operetta and some of this class took part in the school play, Declam work was very extensive among the class members. Considering the circumstances of the case-how they came here and who they are-this bunch has made a pretty good showing this year. The boy who was chosen as leader of the class had occasion to quit school, so the vice president, Lucilk Fink, stepped in and valiantly took his place for the first semester. The captain of the crew for the second semester was jenkin Palmer. The work under his commandment was car- ried on very effectively. The class is all prepared, much better than it was a year ago, to enter into school next year and show some real old school spirit. l950 P ge Thirty-right . H . X Xl rv-'T e . -Z fr. HERBERT - Mudc The Malad High School has an active department of which it is very proud. The divisions of the music department are: Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs, band, and orchestra. Both glee clubs are under the able direction of Mrs. Averill. Mr. H. L. Herbert is an able instructor in band and orchestra. The Christmas cantata, Bethlehem given by the Girls' Glee Club was a great success. The cantata was given at the First Ward Tabernacle. The story was read by Conley Thomas. Norma Williams gave a reading about the spirit of Christmas. Those who sang duets or solos were Ruby Palmer and Irene Ashton. The cantata aside from being educational and religious was very beautiful. Work was started on the high school operetta, Bits O' Blarney about the first part of February. This was one of the outstanding events of the season. The participants were all adapted to their parts, and they put forth every effort to make it a success. Leading characters were played by Pearl Pacer, Albert Wright, Golden jones, jenkin Palmer, Anne Morgan, and Gertie Morgan. Mr. H. L. Herbert, the director, is responsible for the interest that has been shown this year in band. The band now has about thirty members. lt has played for all school activities, including football games, pep rallies, and school plays. The orchestra is not so well organized as the band, al- though it contains about fifteen members. We hope to accomplish much more next year in the music department. l950 e Fofty-four A 'x I X 1 'C' .HY 'l n Pie -. . Lx ii- '1 f g , ' . The first night thirty-three men showed up on the field. As is usual though, the number dwindled down to about twenty-five and that was the number of men who stayed with us. The football season was a successful one from a standpoint of practical experience even though the scores, in most cases, favored the other team. Coach Hodson proved his capability when he raised the green team he started with to a par with the other teams competing in South-east Idaho. When the basketball season opened the school authorities were unable to get a place to practice and Nlalad had no team to represent them this year. Track started on the l9th of February and is now getting well under way. ln interscholastic sports the Nlalad High School team this year was respected and known as a hard-fighting team, a team which fought ethically and with the highest regard for sportsmanship. Every op- ponent knows, and glories in the knowledge that win, lose or draw, Nlalad will put up the best fight possible. There is no give-up to the Welchmen, until the' final gun. Malad's teams receive victory mag- nanimously, defeat with a cheerful smile, knowing that they have put forth their very best efforts. That's the spirit of Malad High School. -EVAN D. EVANS. CLARK Drarnatics Everyone who saw the plays presented by the Malad High School students and faculty will agree that an enviable record has been made for Malad High in the year 1929-305 Mrs. Clark can certainly feel repaid for working so conscientiously in this field of work. Due to her extremely earnest labor, the plays have all been decidedly successful and have won the commendation of all on-lookers. Three plays have been presented this year. Of course, it would be folly to say that the Senior play, Her Step-Husband, was any- thing other than an unqualified success. lt was something on which the seniors can look back and say Well done . Next came the fac- ulty play. lt was extremely interesting. Our beloved faculty surely displayed their talents and genius in this exhibition and we are proud to own them. The all-school play, One of the Family, presented February 13 and l-1, made a very favorable impression on the public. lf last impressions count, the Malad High School dramatics department will be well thought of. As it was played by two entirely different casts ,opportunity was given to more students to show their ablity. The winning group had the opportunity of playing in Preston, while the other cast went to Bear River. Both plays were successful. -BY RUBY PALMER. ISJO P g I' ity-eight fy N- ry-f . There were six divisions-the oratorical, humorous, national, dramatic, extemporaneous speeches, and the one-act plays. There were over forty students tried out in these contests and each one benefited by his efforts. The contestants were eliminated to three in each of these dixisions, and the final elimination was held at the First Ward Chapel to see who would represent Malad in the sub-dis- trict contest which was held at Mfalad. The winners at the First Ward were Gladys Sorenson in the humorous readings, Glenn Thomas in oratory, Conley Thomas in national oratory, Kelvin Sharp in the extemperaneous speeches, and Mary D. Thomas in dramatics. Malad did not enter the one-act plays. The sub-district was held at Malad this year. The schools represented were Preston, Montpelier, Paris, and Malad. The contests were held on Friday, March l4. The high school was dismissed so that the students might attend the contests. After the storm of the battle had cleared, it was found that Malad representatives had won in four of the five contests they had entered. The humorous readings and oratorical contests were held in the morning. Gladys Sorenson won the humorous division with her selection, The Wedding. Glenn Thomas won the oratorical divison with the oration What Think Ye of Christ? ln the after- noon, Conley Thomas won in the national oratorical contest with his oration on The Origin of the Constitution. The dramatic reading was won by a young lady from Preston. Although the judge did not place second and third, we feel that the Malad representative placed a very close second with her reading, Lilac Time. Malad was the only school represented in the extemporaneous speeches, Kelvin Sharp being her representative. He gave a speech on The Economic Employment of Time. ln the evening the one-act plays were given. Preston won in this contest with the play Grandma Pulls the String. After the contests a banquet was held for the contestants at the Great Nor- thern Hotel. A short talk was given by each of the winners. These contestants participated in the district contest at Pocatello and Mary D. Thomas got first in Dramatics, Kelvin Sharp first in extemporaneous speak- ing, and Glenn Thomas first in oratory. The students decided to conduct themselves so that a police force would not be necessary, and to direct their activities along worthwhile lines. The first event that the Boys' League attempted to put over was a Father and Son affair, which was very successful. The next event that was featured was a Christmas Ball. This was accomplished through the efforts of the Boys' and Girls' Leagues combined. The two Leagues worked very harmoniosuly together. The Boys' and Girls' Leagues have no doubt taken the place ol' the City Government. There has been one student in type 2 that has received the certificate of proficiency on the Royal typewriter. When a typing student makes forty words per minute, he is awarded a silver pin--if he has been typing on a Royal machine. For forty words per minute on the lnderwood, he receives a bronze pin. When he has made fifty words per minute he receives a gold, pin, if Royal machine is used and if the Lfnderwood is used he receives a silver pin. When sixty words have been made, he receives a certificate of Pro- ficiency. There is one class in bookkeeping. Twenty-five students are enrolled in the course which requires two periods. The school has equipped the bookkeeping room with a Burrough Adding Machine, this being a very saving device for the bookkeeping students. -BILL FALLIS. I 9 3 0 Page Seventy one ,lywl'TQ+ i. The one which has shown almost the greatest amount of progress is the Home Economic Department. lt has been the object of this de- partment to serve as many students as want to take this course. The students of the junior High School and Senior High are all accomodated, A very large class in both Sewing l and Cooking l took up the first fundamentals in these subjects during the first semester. just the simpler and more easily made clothing was made, and only the very simplest foods were cooked. The second semester work became more complicat- ed, however, but the girls progressed rapidly and their work is a credit to their teacher and the high school. The girls in Sewing ll have done some very remark- able work this year. Their sewing has been along more difficult lines, and the results were above standard. Ex- cellent exhibitions have been given for students and their mothers. The girls of the cooking department have given some excellent lunches this year. They seemed to be starting out early, at least when you consider the old saying The surest way to a man's heart is to fill his stomach. -JAYNE JONES. Science Malad lligh School may be proud indeed ol' its science departments and the teachers at the head ot' the classes. Having a woman teacher for chemistry and biology is something unusual, and we found that she was perfectly capable of undertaking such a dillicult task. Mr. Gilchrist and Mr. Chadburn have shown their ability also as physics and general science teachers respectively. Thev have done some commendable work indeed. Taken as a group, they should be con- gratulated on their line work. The chemistry department of Malad lligh School has forty-four pupils en- rolled. The laboratory is well equipped. Last fall the laboratory was well sup- plied with all the materials that were necessary for the students use. Some of the students are doing excellent work, The biology department is not so well equipped, but we hope that it will soon be the best department of all. There are forty students enrolled. Miss Alma Orr is the head ol' these two departments. She states that both are doing good work. Physics is being taught by Mr. Robert Gilchrist. Ile has twenty-six pupils in his class. The laboratory is very well equipped. Each year more material is being added. The most interesting thing there, is a complete model ol' a steam engine. Some ol' the students are doing excellent work.
