The team started fast, winning thirteen in a row. Malabar won the Five-Way meet, fin- ishing fourth in the Ontario Relays, second in our own Invitational, second in the Sec- tional meet and seventh in the district at Toledo. The highlight of the season was winning the Cardinal Conference meet for the second straight year in a very convincing manner. The Falcons were coached by Gordon Ship- ley and were led all season by Rob Pritchard and Jim Loesch and backed up by Alan Koser, Ron Tucker, and Lloyd Goettl. With Rob Pritchard, Ron Tucker, Jim Lichtenberger and Rob Allen back from the top seven, next season should again be a Cardinal Conference Champs good one for the Falcons. : o . tn - ae ° Se pent OE pe tee . Coached by Frank Bartholow, the girls won the Sectional Championship with victories over Madison and Galion. In the District they beat Bowling Green before losing a hard-fought game to Celina. The team brought home the trophy for runner-up in the District. At the Fall Sports Banquet, Captain Jane Botkin was named Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year. Four matches were played in the State Tournament. Malabar advanced to the semi-finals, against Fremont, by virtue of victory in district competition. The team also finished second in the NOCA Tournament; Wooster won by one point over Malabar. This year's MVP award went to senior Cindy Culler, who was the undefeated number four player in singles. Most-Improved awards went to seniors Suzy Waud and Cindy Bard. The Girls' Tennis merits much support while it continues to make Malabar a respected name in Tennis. The critics were writing Malabar off after a 20-7 humiliation at the hands of Senior High in the second game of the season. The Falcons, however, silenced the skeptics. Winning three of their next four games, they found themselves in a battle for the Cardinal Conference championship. That battle ended ina muddy quagmire at rainy New Philadelphia with a heartbreaking 2-0 loss. Late rallies by the opponents led to two more tough defeats. Suddenly threatened with a possible losing record, the Falcons exploded at Clear Fork for an exhilerating 33-0 win and a 5-5 season record. Highlights of the year included shutout victories at Lexington and Coshocton and a 20-8 Homecoming win over Ashland. Runningback Vic Mack ended his career at Malabar by setting the school career rushing record with 1782 yards. Darrick Beauford's four TD receptions set another school mark and Bruce Johnson got his name in the record book with eleven straight extra points. There were several team records established also. Seniors Mack, Beauford, and Andy Tighe were given 1st team conference honors and quarterback Chris Driggs was named the team's MVP. The '75 Football Falcons were something for Malabar to be proud of and established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the Cardinal Conference. 93 94 Vic Mack Andy Tighe Derrick Beauford 1st Team 1st Team 1st Team Cardinal Conference Cardinal Conference Cardinal Conference Cliff Smith Honorable Mention Cardinal Conference Bruce Johnson Jim Bonham Dave Bricker — a er) A gerry Chris Driggs Don Sazdanoff John Fowler Honorable Mention Honorable Mention Honorable Mention Cardinal Conference Cardinal Conference Cardinal Conference Doug Mills Honorable Mention Cardinal Conference Curtis Hall Bob Milum Nolan Childs 95 96 - ee ROW 1: Don Sazdanoff, Bruce Johnson, Chris Driggs, Andy Tighe, Doug Mills, Cliff Smith, Dave Bricker, Vic Mack, John Fowler, Noland Childs, Jim Bonham. Especially important to the team were wins over St. Peter's and Mansfield Senior for the first time in Malabar's history. By defeating Sandusky in a thrilling contest, they advanced to the semi-finals of the Sectional Tournament, where they fell to Bellevue. The school record for the most rebounds in an individual game was broken by Jim Sauter with 29 against Clearfork. Mickey Scodova set a new field goal percentage record of 85% against New Philadelphia. Most Valuable Player honors went to Dan Jackson, offensive, and Bill Jones, defensive. Jones also received the Coaches Award. Sauter was named Best Rebounder and Mike Dropsey received the Best Foul Shooter and Most Take-Charges Awards. The leadership by our seniors Dan Jackson, Jim Sauter, Bill Keefer, Mike Dropsey, Bill Jones, and Tony Hullinger this year was tremendous and will be missed next season. fee KNEELING: Manager, Ron Poland; Mickey Scodova; Bill Keefer; Mike Dropsey; Tony Hullinger; Manager, Alex McDonald. Co-captains Jane Botkin and Tonya Miller led the varsity team on to victories over Lexington and Madison, and over Mansfield Senior twice. Botkin set every major offensive record and was named MVP. The team tied for first in the Port Clinton Relays and finished third in the Malabar Relays. Malabar finished fourteenth in the State Swim Meet with its only entrant, team captain Jim Loesch, finishing fourth in the two hundred yard freestyle and fifth in the five hundred yard freestyle. But a group of inexperienced athletes combined solid offense and surprising pitching to achieve one of the best records in Malabar baseball history. The team finished 17-12 overall, and was 6-6 in the Car- dinal Conference. The Falcons finished with a fine .292 team batting average. Sophomore Dave Wareham had the best pitching ERA and most wins in the city. Bruce Scodova, who also pitched effectively, led the team in hitting and received the MVP award. This year's victories include an impressive sweep of all five singles divisions by Bill Radler, Ed Morris, Bud Vetter, Steve Vivian, and Bill Jones in the Cardinal Conference Tourney, as well as a second place finish by David Schlossman and Matt Jones at first doubles. The Falcons also enjoyed a victory at the annual Ashland Chevy Tournament, compiling a record twenty of twenty-one possible team points. Several individuals on the team stand out as the truly fine tennis players as well as team leaders. Bill Radler, voted most valuable player, Ed Morris, and Bud Vetter advanced to the Northwest District tournament. These same individuals were instrumental in winning many of the dual matches as all compiled remarkable individual records. 110 Top to Bottom: Paul Alloway, Tim Kafer, Scott Wallington, Coach Nelson Whisler, Bud Vetter, Tim Schuster, Brad Geotz, Jep Bloor, Matt Jones, Bill Radler, Bill Jones, Steve Vivian, Ed Morris. 112 thw, ‘ | a) Laat sagte et SL - wt ly f The Falcon track team continued its winning tra- dition in 1976, putting together a year which included the sectional championship and a second place finish at the Ontario Relays. Senior Bill Keefer was outstanding in the 100 yard dash and 220 yard dash until he pulled a hamstring to damage the team's Cardinal Conference hopes, Keefer piled up the most points in running events and received the MVP award. Rob Pritchard was also impressive, setting the school's mile record, and Ron Tucker tied the Malabar 440 record. Both men return next year. Senior Jim Loesch, a half miler, was another vital member of the squad. Alan Koser and Curtis Hall were team captains. Malabar's mile relay team of Tony Petty, Lash Parker, Curtis Hall, and Ron Tucker placed ninth in the state while breaking the school record in the event.
