The team got off to a good start with a 26-17 victory over Lexington and a 7-6 win over Senior High. This game had to be the most satisfying for it marked the first time the two teams have ever met in football. The team then won four of its next seven games, including a 56-0 win over Lancaster Reemlin. They then finished their season with a 28-0 victory over Norwalk. Hard work from everybody and good Senior leadership seemed to be the main ingredients in producing a very satisfying season with six wins and four losses Five Falcons received first team Cardinal Conference honors in 1972. Jim Belt and Bob Joyce were named to the first team on offense, while Duffy Caldwell and Jeff Hardesty were named first team defense. Mike Keefer was voted first team place- kicker. Receiving honorable mention were Marty Bricker on offense and Rick Blah- nik, Tony Scott, and Mike Watson on defense. Six awards, as selected by the team, were given to certain outstanding players. On offense, the best lineman was Bob Joyce. The best back was Jim Belt. On defense the best lineman was Rick Blahnik. Duffy Caldwell was selected as the best back Honorary captains for 1972 were Duffy Caldwell and Doug Dist] while the most outstanding player award went to Jim Belt The Falcon reserves wound up their season with a 1-5-2 mark 57 Seniors Members of this year’s varsity were; FIRST ROW (L-R): Coaches Lewis, Gerhardt, Bunn, Landsittel, Barr, and Wilson. Andy, in addition to set- ting course records at Wooster, Ashland, Thermodisc, and Possum Run, finished third in the Sectional meet and second in the District meet at Toledo. He then participated in the State meet at Colum- bus. This year’s seniors were Andy John- son, Che Che Mata, Marty Schaaf, Fred Reiter, and Craig Fox. Outstanding underclassmen returning next year are juniors: Bill Newdome, Ed Stockwell, Nick Oliveri, Mark Brunn, and sophomores: Bill Garriott, Matt Ins- core, and Dudley Thomas. 63 64 Water Polo Malabar established a 7-2 record in only its second year of competition in water polo. The Falcons were vic- torious in their post season endeavors, as they finished second in the Northwest District Tournament. The tank- ers were led by Brian Goodall who scored in 12 of 21 attempts in tournament play, and scored 30 goals on the year. The second leading scorer was Dwight Grassel who was 7 of 8 in the tournaments and tallied 15 goals dur- ing the regular season. Other starters were seniors Chip Finefrock, Fred Yubero, and Phil Grafmiller while the Le Sophomore class representatives were Terry Gaunt and a, a a Ga a. Steve D ay. ROW 1: Chip Finefrock, Fred Yubero, Brian Goodall, Phil Grafmiller, Dwight Grassel. ROW 2: Jeff Secrest, Dave Courtad, Mike O’Hara, Terry Gaunt, Steve Day. ROW 3: Brad Williams, Harry Lerro, Mike Hemker. 65 Basketball This year’s basketball team concluded their season posting six wins and thirteen losses. The main problem seemed to be consistency. After losing to Crestview in their initial encounter, the Falcons rebounded to beat Ontario at home. These first two games seemed to set the pace for the rest of the season. Despite their problems they managed Cardi- nal Conference victories over Madison and New Philly, once each, and twice they prevailed over Coshocton. Some of the bright spots for the Falcons this year were seniors Dave Mangan, Mel Hudson, Tom Beard, and Andy Johnson. Mangan and Hudson led the team in scoring throughout most of the year, while Hudson and Johnson controlled the boards for the Falcons. Coming on strong in the latter part of the season, Johnson aver- aged nearly twelve points a game in the last five games, including the tournament loss in overtime to Tiffin Columbia at Ashland College. Malabar has much to look forward to in the return of lettermen Bubba Beal, Dana Eubanks, Mike Keefer, Greg MacDonald and Doug Wolfe. 68 Tom Beard Mel Hudson Dave Mangan ROW 1: Scot Todd, Doug Wolfe, Greg McDonald, Mike Keefer, Tom Beard. Coach Wilson was satisfied and has even more to look forward to next year, with only four graduat- ing lettermen. Leading the team in pins was Toby Matney and compiling the best regular season record was Scott Boals with a 15-4 mark. Other outstanding regular season records were achieved by Craig Fox, (11-7); Jeff Stark, (14-4): Toby Matney, (12-6); and Rick Blahnik, (13-4). Sophomore Toby Matney was the only wrestler to place in the sectionals, where he placed 4th to conclude a successful season for the Falcon grapplers. WRESTLING TEAM: Coach Wilson, Coach Gerhardt, Craig Fox, Roosevelt Johnson, Phil Mills, Toby Matney, Lester Beasley, Jeff Stark, Scott Boals, Bob Waud, Rick Blahnik, and James Fischer 73 74 Swimming The Malabar swimmers compiled a record of 7-5 on the year. The Dirty Dozen fared well in the Cardinal Conference meets finishing second only to Wooster. Steve Day was the only person to advance to the State Meet via the Districts. On route to the State Meet, Day broke two school records in the 400 and 200 yard frees- tyle events with times of 4:06.8 and 1:55.0 respectively. The four graduat- ing seniors are Chip Finefrock, Brian Goodall, Fred Yubero and Dwight Grassel. ROW 1: Chip Finefrock, Brian Goodall, Fred Yubero, Dwight Grassel. Baseball This year’s Baseball team is look- ing forward to the upcoming season. First year Head Coach Bill Swartzmil- ler hopes to build his team around a stiff defense and consistent hitting. John Denig, Steve Metcalf, Kelsey Maynor, Tom Beard, Ray Nowak, Doug Wolfe, and Rick Barton will swing some of the big bats for the Falcons this year. This year’s pitching staff will feature curve-baller Beard, along with Maynor, Metcalf and Bar- ton. The Falcons have built dugouts, installed drainage tile, a fence, and a scoreboard, which will make things a bit more comfortable for fans as well as players. 78 Ces ded Uy - ‘“ ae Cal The 1973 Golf team has five team members returning from last year. They are Mike San- del, Bob Joyce, Jay Kusma, Doug Distl and Rob Ludwig. They will make up the starting five, and will play their open- ing match on April second at Marion Country Club. 79 Tennis The Tennis team is bolstered by the return of three-year lettermen Steve Jones and Brad Ingram. They are looking forward to a successful season this year under the coaching of Jerry Lorentz. Other members who will play important roles in the success of the team are Scott Newman, Norb Welker and Mike Gernhardet. 82 Track The Track team has the nucleus of being one of the best in recent years. With the return of Cardinal Conference Champs Bubba Beal, Andy Johnson, and Mike Watson the Falcons are looking forward to the Mehock Relays. Che Che Mata running the 440 yard dash and Brad Barber and Greg Morris on the high jump will add to the strength of this year’s Falcons. Girls’ Sports’ Teena Pennington. 83 86 S len C A SN ouncil C.
