Dowd, portraying an eccentric, middle-aged man who insists his best friend is a six foot rabbit. Also featured in leading roles were: Sue Shepherd as Elwood's sister and Debbie Bowen as the niece of El- wood. Director: Mr. Gerrell 78 Girls Chosen: Debbie Hardesty and Peggy Sauter. Boys’ and Girls’ State During the summer three seniors represented Mala- bar at Boys’ and Girls’ State. Girls’ State was held at Capital University. The many speakers were an impor- tant part of the program, and the Federalist and Na- tionalist parties functioned as true political parties. Deb- bie Hardesty was elected Senator. Boys’ State took place at Ohio University where Mark Hamilton won the position of Assistant Fire Chief and where Jay Schmidt was elected Aid-to-the-Attor- ney-General. These mock governments gave greater understanding of political functions. 80 Participants: Jay Schimdt, Debbie Hardesty and Mark Hamilton. Alternates for Boys’ State: Ed Larson and Bill Berno. Exchange Student Last summer Sue Shepherd participated in the AFS program as an exchange student in Australia. She at- tended Cheltenham Girls’ High School with her host sis- ter. Sue also spent time visiting various parts of the country and speaking to groups about life in America. Othe r major factors in this year’s season were the winning attitude and unification of the players and coaches. The highlight of the season was almost a replay of last year. The Falcons, who came into the game as underdogs, showed their best performance of the season by tying Madison 14-14. Five Falcons received first team honors in the Cardinal Con- ference: Pete Rincich, linebacker; Ted Sazdanoff, offensive tackle; Dick Belt, middle guard; Mark Hamilton, offensive half- back; and Mike Jones, defensive halfback. Jeff Ziegler, Bill McCormick and Asa Jenkins were given honorable mentions in the conference. Ziegler also received a second team rating in Lost 3 the district. McCormick, Rincich and Belt received honorable) mention. Mike Jones, voted most valuable player this year, was also All District and Honorable Mention on the All-Ohio team. Other outstanding players, selected by the team, were Dick Belt, Best Defensive Lineman; and Ted Sazdanoff, Best Offen- sive Lineman. There were two ties with Pete Rincich and Asa Jenkins sharing the award for Best Defensive Back, and Greg Loesch and Mark Hamilton receiving Best Offensive Back. aun Sr oe OP ae,.2 ae al ston, Mike Sazdanoff, Mark Hamilton, Dave Chester, Row three: Howard Eu- banks, Chuck Kipp, Mike McGuire, Bob Cronquist, Denny Bemiller, Mike Gras- ka, Dick Belt, Paul Reeves, Mike Jones, Dexter Davis, Asa Jenkins. 89 Row one: Don Stewart, Spenser Waresman, Mike Watson, Duffy Caldwell, Lyndon Schmaltz, Scott Marsh, Doug Distl, Lee Board. The stage, which featured a mobile of birds, was simply, but el- egantly decorated in black and sil- ver. That evening Melody and her court witnessed our team's 34-13 victory over Coshocton. ‘The Smile’’ provided music for the after game dance. Homecoming 1970 95 96 Cross Country Won — 3 Lost — 4 The Falcon Harriers finished the season with a third place po- sition in the Cardinal Conference. This year they sent Rodger Loesch and Kim Colby to the district meet at Toledo, in which Loesch placed 18th and Colby placed 31st. Coached by Joe Romano, this year’s Harriers were led by third year letterman and captain, Kim Colby; and Rodger Loesch, who was voted most valuable. Rodney Loesch was awarded most improved Harrier this year. Row one: Pal Kantz, Steve Marcus, Dave Pritchard, Rick Marcus, Andy Burns. I Head Coach Joe Romano Basketball Thirteen Wins and Five Losses Malabar’s basketball team is on its way to its best season yet. Led by graduating lettermen Jay Schmidt, Tom Baker, Mark Stull, and Greg Gerich, the team has at present a 13-5 overall and a 8-4 conference record. This year’s team was inspired by Jay Schmidt's great ability and consistency. His overall point average, sec- ond in the Cardinal Conference, is 20.2 points per game with a 364 point total. Schmidt's fine perform- ance was supported by the equally good performance of junior Robert Crawford who averaged 13.3 points per game for a total of 290 points and complemented this with 222 rebounds. Another good job was done by junior Mike McGuire with a 57% foul goal average. The average team score was 73.6 points per game for a total of 1324 points. The Falcons’ prospects going into the tournament seem quite good. Front row: Rodney Loesch, Jay Schmidt, Mark Stull. Wrestling Eight Wins and Three Losses Superb describes the performance of the Falcon Grapplers this year who had their greatest season ever. Leading the team with a 13-0 record was heavyweight wrestler Chuck Davis, who had ten pins. Both Chuck and Jack Kampf were first in the Cardinal Conference meet. Shane O'Hara, who had the most takedowns, finished second in the meet. Vic Olivieri, another fine wrestler, finished third. The team, which had an 8-3 rec- ord, will lose eight senior lettermen this year. Row one: Asa Jenkins, Steve March, Larry Pierce, John Amicone, Rocky Merrill, Craig Fox, Manager Rick Kuhn. Row two: James Ginn, Rick Gerich, Vic Olivieri, Jack Kampf, Chuck Davis, Bob Conklin, Gregg Gleisinger, Shane O'Hara. 102 Swimming Ten Wins and Three Losses The Mighty Malabar Mermen ended up with another winning season this year. For the past three years, Mal- abar Swimmers had kept up a winning streak of 27 straight victories, which ended with their defeat by Massilon this year. After ending the season of dual meets with a 10-3 record, the Falcon team sent the greatest 400 free-style relay team Malabar has ever had to the State Meet. Bob Seibert also went to State for the individual 200 free style. Although their long winning streak was broken, our swimmers put up a good fight. Seniors leaving the team are Bill Berno, Bruce Burns, Kim Colby, Greg Loesch, Merrill Tawse, Tom Freiheit, Tyson Tuttle, and Jerry Yu- bero. These boys have only known three defeats in their three years of swimming. Other outstanding per- formers were juniors Andy Shiplet, diver, with a 9-4 rec- ord, Bob Seibert, free-styler, and sophomore Chip Fine- frock who specialized in the 100 yard backstroke. Team Captain Bruce Burns was a consistent performer in freestyle events. aw + ny 2 oer First row: Merrill Tawse, Tyson Tuttle, Kim Colby, Bruce Burns, Greg Loesch, Bill Berno, Jerry Yubero.
