Its vast resource of originality was evident in the manner in which Homecoming was presented this year. Tradi- tion was abandoned. The queen’s throne was placed far and above to the left of the stage, instead of in the center. The green and blue decorations transformed the auditorium into a sea of mist. Homecoming 1967 was a tribute to all who were involved. The job of collecting dues was next in line for the seniors. Later graduation announcement forms were voted on and an assembly was held at which time the students placed their orders. The Senior Class Play was a major theatrical success of the year. Students were given an opportu- nity to display their dramatic talents. The play was well-accepted by a large response. Students who had shown outstanding academic standing throughout high school were honored at the Senior Banquet and at Class Day. Prom night lent a romantic atmosphere to the graduation exercises, while Baccalaureate added a time for serious reflec- tion. The years of hard work were symbolized on the day of achievement, Commencement. First row: Mr. Scarbrough, Miss Buchwalter, Mr. Gerrell, Advisers. They Gained Experience In Government Mark Smith and Craig D’Ooge were among thirteen hundred boys who _partici- pated in Boys’ State at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio during the period lasting from June 9 through June 16, 1967. The aim of the annual pro- gram is essentially instruc- tive. The boys learned about state elections by participat- ing in mock elections. Each boy was a member of a city of about fifty-five boys. They were expected to pay taxes, keep a deed on their property, and keep books much as public officials must. Mark ran for Secretary of State and was appointed the Director of Industrial Rela- tions. Craig ran for and won the Senatorship of his city. Chosen to represent Malabar at the Girls’ State Convention last summer was Vicki An- derson. The annual con- vention was held at Co- lumbus, Ohio. Twelve- hundred girls from all parts of the state were in attendance. At left, Vicki relates her Girls’ State experi- ences to alternate candi- date Pat Daugherty and other interested students. While at Girls’ State Vicki was the Federalist candidate for the office of State Attorney General. The convention was held from June seven- teenth through the twen- ty-fourth. Exchange Students Enjoyed Trips Abroad Omar Valdimarsson, foreign exchange student from Iceland, was able to come to Malabar through the International Chris- tian Youth Exchange (ICYE). Mark Smith, Student Council President, was Omar’s brother in the United States. Residing with Rick Miller, Senior Class Vice President. was Do Quang Toa from South Viet Nam. Do Quang Toa came to Malabar through the efforts of the American Field Service (AFS). His home is in Bien-Wai, South Viet Nam. This past summer Grey Gundaker, Senior at Malabar this year, spent two months in Rufford Abbey, England. She was one of the 1800 American students chosen by the A.F.S. to go abroad and was sponsored by A.F.S. chapters. In the upper left hand corner Grey is pictured sipping tea, a daily practice in England. At the lower right Toa is shown with his brother Rick and Omar (lower left) is seen standing with Mark in the halls of Malabar. 55 The Accipiter Business Staff distributed the newspaper to homerooms every time the publication came out. The offense was versatile, able to gain yards in the air, as dis- played by Steve Dutton (left) or ground yards out, as shown by Jim Nixon (below right). At times the offense was stopped as Steve Hahn was brought to the ground by the Ashland defense (below). Throughout the year the team was faced with the problem of not being effective in both halves. Many times the players took the lead in the first half only to lose in the second half. Football ss First Row: Deluster Paige, Walter Merrill, Dick King, Jim Cole, Tom Miller, Dave Fox, Jim Gessler. Second Row: Joe Keetle, Jim Nixon, George Ackley, Don Synder, Terry Coulter. Absent: Steve Dutton. Homecoming Se SAL fe: Homecoming Court members enjoyed a quick snow-ball fight between classes. 70 71 72 This year’s Homecoming theme was interpreted in shades of blue and green. Court members were surrounded by a mist of translucent veils and Queen Ann Ludwig reigned from a throne of white laced metal. She wore a gown of white chiffon and carried long-stemmed yellow roses. The green dresses of Nancy Tawse (opposite middle) and Peggy Wenger (opposite right) complimented the blue formals worn by Karen Austin (opposite left) and Irene Prinz (left). After the crowning of Queen Ann by 1966 queen, Jane Ferris, the Ashland-Malabar game football was presented by Jim Nixon. Mr. Robert E. Glass, Superintendant of Schools, addressed the student body. The decorations committee was headed by Peggy Pifer who is shown on the opposite page recovering from hard work. Peggy Wenger (above left) eagerly awaits the results of the election. 73 Football One of the most disappointing games of the year was against Madison. The Rams took an early lead and the Falcons were unable to catch up. Spirit at the games this year was at a new high. Typically, Vicki Anderson (left) displayed the spirit that backed the team throughout the year. After a tough season the team members enjoyed a banquet (below right). The offense rolled up touchdowns, while the de- fense was holding the Colts to only six points. When the final gun sounded, the Falcons had won the game, 18-6. The rushing attack this year was lead by Joe Kettle (below left) and Jim Nixon (right). Many times throughout the year this combination came up with the important first down. Many sophomores tried out for the team and interest was at an all time high. The first game of the 27 game schedule was against the Crest- view Cougers. Baseball 81 Golfers Had Successful Season The Malabar Falcon golf team fought to another success- ful season. With a veteran team, the Falcons looked forward to the Cardinal Conference meet, the District meet, and hopefully the State tournament. The team was paced by senior Steve Keyser, the winner of the district last year. Rounding out the team were seniors Greg Hamilton, John Talaba, and Joe Keetle, and junior Dave Goldman. aictanay Wrestling Squad Sought Members This year’s wrestling team, under the direction of Coach Wrobbel, was much improved. The team rallied against obstacles. In spite of being forced to forfeit all the matches in the 103 pound weight class, the team won many of its matches. The wrestlers were paced by Les Revennaugh who had a 9-1 mark at the end of the season. He won the sectional meet in his weight class qualifying for the district meet. The other wrestlers made im- provements over last year. Jeff Turley was one of the outstanding juniors, ending the season with an 8-2 mark. With continued improvement the team should be tough next year. Wrestling First Row: Bill Oliver, Don Synder, Duane Rowland, Jeff Turley, Gary Burton, Ed Beer, Larry Castle, Bob Jona. Third Row: Lou Shaban, Al Sher- Burdge. Second Row: Barry Kirkwood, Rex Gleisinger, Dave Hickle, Bob man, Les Revennaugh, Jim Sparks. 83 This year’s Falcons topped previous team records in victories. Their seventh victory, the one that set the record, came against the Shelby Whippets. The victory over Shelby evened the season record at 7-7. Following a loss to Ashland, the team once again evened its record at 8-8 with a win over Clearfork. Steve Hahn (right) demon- strates his ability at the foul line that was decisive in many of the Falcon games. Forward Steve Dutton (left) goes up for a re- bound in the Coshocton game. This year, for the first time in two years, the team beat Madison. Basketball Probably the most exciting and inspiring game of the year was against Lexington. The Lexing- ton five jumped off to an early lead that lasted through the first quarter. From that time on, though, the game was all Mala- bar’s, and when the final buzzer sounded, the Falcons had won 70-50. Before this year, pride and fight seemed to mean little to the basketball team. This year the team began to fight and the fight- ing paid off. After the first few games of the year, the team was in first place in the conference. This will-to-win gave the team a reputation of being the toughest in Malabar history. Set foxes Joe Keetle, Steve Hahn, Hank Steger, Jack Soliday. The swimmers, although startled by early setbacks, got back on the winning trail in preparation for the Malabar Relays and State meets. They climaxed their early season with a stunning victory over Wooster, 64-31. In the Wooster meet, Craig D’Ooge led the Falcons while breaking two Malabar pool records, in the 400 yard freestyle with a 4:24.4 and in the 200 yard freestyle with a 1:58.5 timing. Also in the meet Jeff Hor- vath made his best time in the 100 yard breaststroke with a 1:05.4 time. Jeff Distl can be seen (lower right) diving to victory. Jim Wagner and Ric Goodall (upper left) are caught discussing their recent victory. Ric Goodall (upper right) is preparing for the start of a race, and Mike Lerro (lower left) is beginning a winning effort. Although it was somewhat of a disappointing season for the swimmers, there was a promise for the future. Seniors Craig D’'Ooge, Tom Garber, Vic Kuhn, Mike Murray and Jim Wagner paced the team. The juniors and sophomores also fared well. Sophomore Jeff Horvath had one of the top ten times in the state in the 100 yard breaststroke event. Junior Mike Lerro’s entry in the butterfly also anticipated the future. Also sopho- more Jeff Dist! and junior Don Faugl did well diving. They both landed many first places in diving competition. With snow still on the ground the distance runners were outside running, showing how determined they were to raise the Track team’s record of a year ago. Although seniors prevailed in the hopes for a winning season, there was also a good crop of juniors and sopho- mores out for the team. It is interesting to review the accomplishments that stemmed from the ideals of the Class of 1969. The Junior Class can take pride in the list of achievements to which many members of the class have contributed. The class worked continually toward the betterment of itself and the school, as exemplified by their play entitled You Can’t Take It With You. The play, which was presented November 24th and 25th, was an impressive affair that drew many praises from students and teachers alike. The stage setting added to the success of the production and is still in the minds of many who saw it. Christmas trees were sold on Mehock Field from early December until Christmas. Many students spent time after school selling the trees. The project netted a large sum of money for the class. President Greg Woerth was a successful leader in every way. He and the other officers had a very busy year with all their projects. The Class of 1969 can look back on its two years at Malabar with the feeling of success. They were years of work, achievement, and reward. iienyfone 9 eee GT PAT WHI SF aR i c bi 5 a. pas i] at First Row: Marc Schiler, Vicki Gagich, Missy Stephens, Sally Bowen, Sherrie Shanewise, Ed Beer. The office of vice-president was sup- plied by Lesley Williams whose support strengthened the class. Financial duties, raising initial funds and making cautious expenditures, fell to treasurer Mark Suman. Minutes were taken by Lonnie Holmes who excelled as secretary.
