Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, was host to the group. Thirteen thousand boys composed the Nationalist and Federalist Parties. Dale was elected County Prosecutor of the Federalist Party. Charlie was a Nationalist and a member of the House of Representatives. The purpose of Boy’s State was to learn the basic functions of government. Susan Jackson had the honor of representing Mala- bar for a ten-day session at Girl’s State last June. Twenty- five hundred girls representing various schools through- out the state learned about government, campaigning, and elections. Running against forty girls, Sue became Charlie, Sue, and Dale compared notes. Lieutenant Governor, the only successful Nationalist Party winner in a near Federalist-Party sweep. As Lieutenant Governor she acted as Vice President, Presi- dent of the Senate, and she often consulted with the governor. Sue then took a tour of the capitol and spoke in front of the Ohio Senate. 30 Committee Inspired School Spirit Student Council brought to- gether the presidents and vice- presidents of leading clubs to function as a school-spirit com- mittee. Student leaders working together resulted in better com- munication, a feeling of coordi- nation, and purpose. nea _ @?. ie sen Alan Wilson demonstrated the team’s intent to “wreck” the Rams. Students signed their names to the Madison “Ram,” which was burned in a pre-game bonfire. Statistics do not reveal a true picture of this season’s two victories, which were non-Cardinal Conference battles, and eight defeats. After losing the first two games, the Falcons upset Newark, ranked nine- teenth in the state at that time, eighteen to thirteen. The team dropped into a disappoint- ing five-game slump the following week with a heartbreaking Homecoming loss to Ashland on a touchdown in the final period. The Falcons bounced back to crush Wadsworth in the last game thirty-seven to nothing. The rain-soaked field failed to keep Malabar from rolling up its big- gest score in three years of football. The Cleveland Brown’s Vince Costello was speaker at Malabar’s Fall Sports Banquet. Among those recognized were Co-Captains Dale Scholl and Paul Johns, Wilbur Lanier (31), dives for the Dover ball carrier. The Falcons had a phenomenal hard-luck season finishing with a record of 2-10 in the Cardinal Conference and 4-14 over- all. Hopes started high as the cagers swept their first two games: one, a hard-fought thriller against Lexington, 49-48, and the other over Mt. Vernon, 59-53. The following week saw, in the 1965-66 conference debut, Malabar beaten in the last ten seconds of play by the New Philadelphia Quakers, 61-60. The final battle of the year versus Shelby typified the frustrating season during which the team dropped nine of their fourteen losses by five or less points. It took four overtime periods for the Whippets to beat the Falcons 73-68. Malabar saw one game of tournament action, falling to Lexington, 60-51, at the Marion Coliseum. Leading the team in scoring honors was senior Alan Wilson who, in his first year of high school basketball, managed to collect 191 points, fol- lowed by Nick Gerber’s 188. Wilson also topped the squad in rebounding with 130. Nick Gerber and Mike Dorner were second with 88 rebounds each. Successfully defending their Cardinal Con- ference championship, the Falcon swim team, led by Coach Frank Bartholow, finish- ed the season with a duel meet record of 13-1. The tankers have compiled the astound- ing mark of 24-2 over the last two years. Depth was a valuable key to the team’s achievements. Typifying this was their 48-47 win over Newark in which they won only three of the eleven events. Malabar added to its string of victories by taking top honors in the Denison and the Malabar Relays. In the Denison Relays at Granville, two first places and three second places contributed to the team’s sixty points, ten points better than the nearest opponent. At the Malabar Relays, the Falcons proved to be stingy hosts as they edged their closest competitor, Newark, by three points, 70-67. Qualifying in the district meet at Bowling Green State University for the state finals were Jim Steen ,in the 200-yard individual medley, Bill Orton, in the 100-yard breast- stroke, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Bob Ferris, Craig D’Ooge, Dan Drouhard, and Jim Steen. Orton’s fifteenth place, Steen’s tenth, and the relay team’s tie for fourth gave Malabar twentieth place in Ohio. Working to further traditions that the previous classes had earnestly established, add- ing new trends to keep Malabar absolutely current, and asserting their own individuality were the responsibilities accepted by Malabar’s first true graduating class. Electing officers, selecting advisors, and launching the first money-making projects started the class into unified motion. Homecoming was a major project of the junior year, along with the class play. The senior year brought a change in tradition with Homecoming giving the class a busy beginning. The class play, the prom, and the many preparations for graduation filled the year with activity. An academic awareness and atmosphere prevailed throughout their high school career. Graduates left Malabar with a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of confidence in meeting the future. 115 ‘ PL hee on e i, were e ,eseF KAREN ACKLEY DAVID ALEXANDER VIRGINIA AMATO S eniors SANDRA ANDERSON ROBERT ARMSTRONG LINDA AU CONSTANCE BAILET MARY BARBER CHARLES BARR JON BAUGHMAN CHARLES BEARD HEIDI BEUGGER GERALD BIRD 116 Class gave oral interpretation of Oedipus the King.
