MARVIN DEES 42 Backing each other up in ad- ministrative duties is the at- titude of Malabar’s principals. Mr. Robert Kennedy, (right), school principal, looks upward toward the heights that students might achieve. Though very busy, Mr. Kennedy is known for his willingness to talk with stu- dents and his fairness in deal- ing with the many problems he encounters. Mr. Frank Pival, assistant prin- cipal, ably fills a difficult job. He is the man whose work is often behind the scenes help- ing formulate school policy. Mr. Pival frequently settles ques- tions concerning rules and special problems. “And now for the evening announcements, begins Mr. Robert Kennedy. ADMINISTR ATION Mr. Frank Pival discusses a point of school policy with Karen Krause. 43 | COUNSELORS Advising and helping stu- dents were our three competent counselors. They administered mental maturity tests to the sophomores and signed juniors up for PSAT and National Merit Scholarship tests. The members of the senior class were remind- | ed of additional tests а а regis- tration dates. They dealt with | special personal problems and helped students decide which college was best suited to their | needs. All of these services help- ed the pupils of Malabar pre- pare for the future and have a better outlook on life. | Left to right: Mr. Edward Wallen, Mrs. | Virginia Kirby, Mrs. Ruth Whiting. ADMINISTRATIVE AIDS ` mg a— Anyone who went into the main office saw the secretaries at work taking dic- tation, typing, answering telephones, or performing various other exacting tasks which are necessary to the successful operation of Malabar. They also helped the counselors with filing students’ records as well as instructing the office assistants in their duties. سس — sl Left to right: Mrs. Geraldine Brundage, Mrs. Eleanor Barmen. In addition to training in domestic skills the home economics department offered instruction in interior decorating, budget balancing, and flower arranging. Those who participate in the home economic's course be- come well prepared for practical application of acquir- ed skills and in furthering their training in one of the phases of the program. In the south wing of the building is the industrial arts department. Here the boys learn mechanical draw- ing, metal shop and wood shop, plus other fundamental skills. Display cases throughout the building show some of the work produced in this area. INDUSTRIAL ARTS HOME ECONOMICS ` Left to right: Mr. Frank Bartholow, Mrs. Mary Shaw. 45 J ꝑ ꝗ . SOCIAL STUDIES Seated, left to right: Mr. Joseph Romano, Mr. Kenneth Coleman. Standing: Mr. Lowell Smith, Mr. Bichard Evilsizor, Mr. Louis Cel- ini. LIBRARY History concerns the present as well as the past. In studying our background we gain significant insights in- to the beginning of our nation and its cherished charac- teristics that have survived the years of rapid change and growth. The study of other countries, governments, and cultures gives students a cosmopolitan outlook. This year the social studies department at Malabar offered a wide variety of courses dealing with both modern and ancient history. The program was enriched by the use of maps, reports, and outside speakers. One of the busiest of Malabar’s facilities was our library. Here excellent reference books, fiction, non-fic- tion, poetry, magazines, newspapers, phonograph record- ings, pamphlets, and technical publications were avail- able. Students who attained high grade averages were issued honor passes permitting them to use the library at their convenience without a special-permission pass. Our librarian: Miss Ruth Culbertson. 46 FINE ARTS The fine arts are emphasized at Malabar High School. Under competent leadership students expanded their cul- tural appreciation in general and perfected their perfor- mance in the arts in particular. Painting, sculpting, silk screening, and block printing were among the offerings in art per se. Acting, public speaking, debating, directing, and tech- nical instruction were some of the activities of the speech and drama department. Vocal and instrumental training for both solo and group performances, understanding and appreciating music, both old and new, and staging and studying musical presentations compose a portion of the music de- partment’s program. BUSINESS Science is becoming increasingly important in this space age and Malabar stays apace in exploratory studies. At Malabar many courses were offered in both biological and physical sciences. These courses were made stimulating through the use of films, special de- monstrations, lectures, and laboratory experiments. The science department also helped sponsor the Science Fair and promoted independent study experiments, and creativity. Preparing Malabar’s students for the business world was the purpose of our commercial department. Students learned typing, stenography, accounting, filing, financ- ing, operating computor machines, and business English. A portion of the program was D. C. T. in which the stu- dents worked part time and attended school during the rest of the day. ENGLISH An extensive reading program in contemporary and classical literature, a writing program which is design- ed to develop the faculty of critical an alysis and expres- sion, and a continuing study of functional grammar are the emphases of Malabar’s English department. The use of films, records, and sometimes live drama adds to the interest of the classes. “Read not to contradict and confute . . . but to weich and consider. Francis Bacon. Mr. Dale Dildine. Individual activities such as rope climbing, swimming and rings are emphasized along with competitive sports such as basketball, vol- leyball, and baseball. Some of the additional duties of a physical education instructor are coaching teams, advising clubs related to the department, and teaching subjects such as health, sports apprecia- tion, driver’s training and first aid. “Should we use man to man or zone,” Mr. Lowell Smith asks of Mr. Richard Evilzisor as John Arcudi looks on. 50 Left to right: Miss Dolores Billhardt, Mr. Jack Wise, Mrs. June Eddy, Mr. Russell Hepner, Mr. Alfred Ward. SPORTS Ending his second year as head coach, Al Ward, gave the team need ed drive as well as valuable coaching. Mr. Ward was graduated from Sidney High School in 1949 where he won a letter in foot- ball. He went on to receive his degree in physical education at Miami of Ohio where he played football under Woody Hayes and Ara Parashigian. In his sen- ior year he played in the Salad Bowl. Before coming to Malabar he was assistant coach at Mansfield Senior High. Presently he is earning his Masters Degree at Bowling Green. In its second year the Falcon football team showed good spirit and fine determination throughout the ten game schedule. In its first game the team fought to an eight- e ight deadlock against an experienced Shelby ball club. Completing the festivities of the first Homecoming, later in the year, the gridders came through in fine style, defeating Coshocton for the second consecutive year. A few weeks later the Falcons again came through in impressive fashion by blanking our new rival, Madison, twelve to nothing. In the final game of the year the team had another successful evening by holding fourteen point favorite Wadsworth to a scoreless deadlock. Sixteen able lettermen will be among next years promising line up. FOOTBALL Coach Al Ward L. Smith, T. Pierson, T. Mulholland, A. Ward, R. Hepner, D. Franta 80 —À a- ka First Row: N. Gerber, J. In August the boys began their condition- ing which payed off in the weeks to come. Coached by Mr. Romano, the spirit of the team was high and this attribute proved helpful in the big running events in which they participated. The team’s regular season record did not reflect their true potential. For the second consecutive year the Falcon run- ners took first place in the Cardinal Con- ference Meet, then surprising many, took second place in the District. This feat earned them a berth in the State Meet in Columbus. The team began early in October, conditioning themselves by lifting weights, exercising, and running. In this physical-fitness program team members tried to prepare their bodies for the physical endurance that would be required of them during the bas- ketball season. The highlight of the season was the substantial defeat of Ashland, our Cardinal Conference rival. The game was nip and tuck until, in the last few minutes, the Falcon team surged to a six-point margin. At the sound of the buzzer, with the score 67 to 63, the stands emptied as the excited fans carried their heroes off the floor. re G. Morales J. Arcudi N. Gerber R. Vitcusky M. Fisher W. Lanier 25 J. Pat Jackson, Malabar’s representative, was among the 1200 participants. The purpose of the workshop is to provide an op- portunity for high school girls to participate in governmental functions on the state level. It is also designed to improve the understanding of government operations, sportsmanship, and citizen- ship. After campaigning and state elections, the govern- ment began to function. The state was divided into 3 counties and 24 cities; then the political parties, the Nationalists and Federalists, were set up. Pat was a member of the Nationalist party. Be- cause of a Federalist sweep she lost her election for Lieutenant Governor and was appointed assistant clerk of the Senate. BOYS STATE During the week of June 10-20, 1964, Alex Curchin and Dave Preuninger attended Buckeye Boys’ State at Ohio Uni- versity in Athens, Ohio. This program is designed to better acquaint the participants with the functions of government. The boys also became aware of the responsibility which ac- companies good citizenship. The boys were divided at random into two parties, the Nationalists and the Federalists, and a mock state was estab- lished. Elections were held in which Alex became a State Senator and Dave the engrossing clerk of the Senate, Speeches by Governor Rhodes and Chief Justice O'Neil highlighted the week. The groups main objective this year was to raise money to pay for the striking orange and brown robes. By painting street numbers on curbs and having a consession at the Mansfield Relays the students and Parents Club were able to obtain the necessary Ме рек funds. Our theme this year allowed us to present the school activities in a variety of attitudes — suggesting the joys of accomplishments, the dis- appointments in unachieved goals, the excitement of social life, and the humdrum of routine. Comparing the results of their efforts. AS WE SAW IT i Assessing their responsibilities at Malabar. Hoping for help after trying hours. Pressing the gown of a last preformance. Eying for perfection. 175 MORE THAN A POST “As we see it,” Malabar’s second year was an eventful one — combining the challenges of the new with the confidences of ex- perience. Our intent was to capture the year's activities and to present them as they occurred. We hope, through these pages, you will be able to relive the victories, defeats, joys, and disappointments of the school year. Thanks to our photographers: Armen, Smucker, and Buell-Kraft Studios. A special thanks to Mr. Richard Armen for his time and patience. We express gratitude to the Mansfield News-Journal and Ohio School Pictures. The Consolidated Graphic Arts Corporation is also thanked for its assistance with the technical aspects of preparing the TALON for publication. Our appreciation is extended to the S. K. Smith Company for printing this year's cover. Much credit goes to the editorial staff for its enthusiasm, origin- ality, initiative, and pleasant attitudes in the face of hectic deadlines. The business staff and its advisor, Mrs. Conrad, also deserve praise for their efforts in financing the 1965 TALON. We appreciate the consideration of the faculty and its under- standing of our problems and requests. Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Pival receive grateful thanks for permitting our various errands. A very special thanks goes to Mr. Hailey for his incomparable assistance. His advice and cheerfulness were great assets in helping us through our many problems. “As we see it,” Malabars 1964-1965 school year was an exciting one to record.
