This year, therefore, I shall attempt no more than to ask you to look at life as it is. Don't be afraid to meet life freely and openly. Try to understand its meaning and to learn its language. Try it now. Sir Winston Churchill once said: 'Plant a garden in which you can sit when digging days are done. It may be only a small garden, but you will see it grow. Year by year it will bloom and ripen. The fruit trees will be pruned and trained. The flowers will bloom in more beautiful combinations. There will be sunshine there even in the winter time, and cool shade and the play of shadow on the pathway in the shining days of June.n 'Tis but an analogy. But you are the gardener of your life. 'Tis spring, 'tis time for planting. Try it now! This was an eventful year. We appreciate the facilities that the new addition to the old building provides. Perhaps,we also learned that success and survival are dependant on sound study habits and on an honest adherence to reasonable regulations My thanks to the staff for their excellent work and wonderful co-operation. My congratulations to all successful students. My sympathies to those students whose honest effort was not enough to ensure academic success. My well-wishes to the grad uates: I know you will find your new responsibilities exhilarating. My commenda- tions to the editor of the Yearbook and to his staff. This creditable edition re- presents much hard work. To all, my wishes for a most enjoyable holiday. E. S. KILIM IK. 2 PRINCIPAL'5 MESSAGE There is much criticism of the school and by nthe schooln I mean every school. Many students are leaping gaily onto this critical bandwagon, enjoying the opport- unity to embarrass teachers, principals, superintendents, and school board members. But whatever its faults Cand there are manyl, it does attempt to promote integrity. I believe the school teaches every day and throughout the day that moral order in society is worthy of respect. The school does so by demonstrating certain stand ards as part of its day by day operation. For example the school shows the student the value of effort and work by giving public recognition to merit, every report card, every grade, every honour roll, every scholarship, says to the student nyou must work for what you getn. Every student has exactly the same importance as every other student. He has the same locker, the same use of school facilities, the same opportunities for education, the same freedoms, and the same restricitions. Freedom of speech is exemplified by classroom discussions, freedom of religion is exemplified by the respect for human dignity is exemplified by the equal treatment of all students as described above. All of this is democracy of the highest order. Professor Jacks, an eminent English educator made the following striking state ment about the teaching of values in school: Wwe teach values all day long-- In arithmetic by accuracy and care, In history by humanity, In geogrpahy by breadth of mind, In industrial arts by craftsmanship, In art by seeking beauty, In science by reverence for truth, In the playground by fair play.n During my years at Major Pratt my many and precious young friends lead me to the belief that we were not entirley unsuccessful in fostering democratic values. In saying goodbye, I would like to express the hope that you will extend to all those you meet in the years ahead the same warmth and courtesy which was evidently extended to me in my final months at Russell. You will thus command the same res- pect from others which I always held for you. I wish you all every success. 3 REX WILLIAMS 0 .--1 4 , n E Teaching Staff ymfwz - , - , , 5 , ,N V tW'+- 4 ,1-wif Y ,V V '. u MM P ,V 'X W cn' 2 'K Vg, H Y f 15? Yea, though I walk through the halls of knowledge, I fear great evil, For I have forgotten my homework, His face hardens before me He maketh me write 1000 lines He filleth the blackboard with homework, My notebook runneth over Surely mischief and misfortune shall follow me All the days of my schooling, And I shall dwell in the halls of this school forever. 6 President's Message This year for me has been one of many trials and tribulations. The job of sident demands a great deal of work and dedication but when receiving some praise it makes it worth while. I would like to thank everyone on the Student Council and in the Student Body who helped me do the things I wanted to attempt. with out your help the year wouldn't have been a success, but with your help I believe it has been Ones It is always hard to try something new in a school, but this year we did and I believe the support was better this year than last. I felt that people were ready to help and believe me this made my job a great deal easier. I hope that when you are gone from this school you can turn around and say this was a good year. Because of student union and co-operation. It is my hope that next year the union and co-operation will bloom and grow stronger, because it is necessary for an active and excited student body. To those who compose the student council for next year good-luck, and remember if you want help nask for itn. As for you people if you want to get involved but aren't goluntger your help. You will find that it is appreciated and you will feel good deep down. Good-luck to one and all in the future and may you find your dream. Thanks for this year. Echtors Message This year we wanted to produce a Yearbook of a higher quality than ever before produced in this school. With the help of a very efficient staff, I be- lieve we have accomplished this. This year has been one of trial and tribulation, but it has all been well worth it. It is my hope that this Yearbook will keep alive the memories we have of this school and never let them die. I would like to thank the committee, Mr. Kallio, our faculty advisor and other individuals who made this Yearbook a reality. To the grads, who will soon be starting another facet in their lives, I wish them every success in their future careers. To the undergrads I hope they com- plete their education and go on to find better things in life. Thank you, for the privilege of letting me serve you. 7 DON FORSYTH 0 ' I Student Council BACK ROW: Bob Schwalm Ken Derbrowka Paul Orsak Bruce Graham Randy Fingas Fran Ungrin THIRD ROW: Shirley Forsyth Betty Chachula Sylvia Melnyk Brenda Rodeck Larry Kalyniuk Colleen Prosavich Judy Forsyth Brenda Fingas SECOND ROW: Mr. Nelson Don Forsyth Mr. Kallio Larry Boychuk FRONT ROW: Larry Gorluik Pat Schwalm Lynn Onchulenko Candis Choropita ' . No monkey ever deserted his wife Starved her babies or ruined her life And you've never known a mother monk To leave her babies with others to bunk, Or pass them on from one to another 'Till they scarcely know who is their mother, And another thing you'll never see... A monk build a fence around a coconut tree And let the coconuts go to waste, Forbidding all other monks to taste. If I'd put a fence around this tree, Starvation would force you to steal from me Here's another thing a monk won't do, Go out at night and get into a stew, And use a club or a knife To take some other monkeys life. Modern woman does not show age at HO, in act, very few reach no any more. The reason a person becomes quieter when older--he learns no one listens anyway. Most women dislike jury duty because its all listening. A minute for safety is better than a month for recovery. Nothing will draw a father and his teen-age son closer together than having only one set of car keys.
