Not by chance, but by hard unceasing work have we filled our treasure chests with the gold of knowledge. We have sought and we have found. A great many times in the past the name Buccaneer has been linked with brave deeds. Great was his lust for adventure and gold, but beneath this covering of fierceness came forth the true Buccaneer. We are proud of our title, Buccaneer. The Buccaneer was the most spectacular figure of his century. Thrilling tales of romance and adventure have been woven about his deeds. So, we too have strange and thrilling things happen to us in the turmoil and confusion of our time. The Buccaneers of '44 are setting their course away from safety and security into the unknowns which face them in their journey of life. May each of us travel the pathway of happiness and success, and leave his footsteps in the sands of time. So hail to the Buccaneerl Long may his light shine in the dark uncertainties of the future. i DICK MILLER -o' --ff 2 1 2 5 :- 9' ff- if A 4 f :iv-K .'.n.f.s.,,,,,'s . ,. MOTTO Dare to dream! Dare to do! FLOWER COLORS American Beauty Rose Red and White OPQLUOI' May the memories of the years we spent at Mainland High School ever be a medium through which we can remember and re-live happy and successful days. Whatever significance these four years may possess is not for us today, but for the too rapidly advancing tomorrow when the present will become the past and the future will be the present. In that tomorrow, if this book will form echoes in your memory-echoes of someone who was once a friend, a particular incident almost forgotten, or just a small happening that you will find joy in remembering, these few pictures and pages will not have been in vain. With these inspiring words ringing in our ears we set forth, in the autumn of 1940, to earn for ourselves a niche in Mainland High School's Hall of Famef, Under the able guidance of our first class president, Bob Whitaker, we launched our career as Freshmen. He was assisted by Lewis Fralish, vice-president, Ardis McDonald, secretary, Liz McClellan, treasurer, and Miss Cecile Willis, sponsor. Class colors of red and white were chosen. The Freshman Frolic was our first step into. the social life of the school, and a picnic at Sanlando Springs wound up our first but not forgotten year at Mainland. Soon we were Sophisticated Sophomoresn--or so we thought. Fred Smith took over the presidency, with Sunny Hayes, vice-president, Ardis McDonald again secretary, Charlotte Lester, treasurer, and Miss Margaret Scott, sponsor. During the course of this year we gave two dances, The Sweetheart Swingl' and the Spinster Spin. According to tradition, we decorated for the baccalaureate service of our Mother Class, looking forward to the day when we, too, would wear the cap and gown. Enthusiasm ran riot in our Junior Year. Spurred on by our country's entry into the growing world confiict, and with the knowledge that some of our boys would soo.n be leaving, we resolved to make our last two years memorable ones. Fred Smith was again handed the gavel, Steve Sirkin, vice-president, Ardis McDonald, secretary, Sunny Hayes, treasurer, and Miss Wilson, sponsor. In addi- tion to our annual autumn dance and in keeping with the trend of the war, we co-sponsored, with the senior class, a Ugaslessl' homecoming parade. We then began to think of raising money for the annual Junior-Senior Prom which we were to sponsor in the spring. Our first ways and means event was a patriotic comedy in three acts, American Passport. Next we responded to the urgent call from the orange growers, and enjoyed a day picking their crop. We were hosts that year to the Senior class at what we considered one of Mainland's most elite proms. It was our first formal, conducted with poise and dignity, and was a fitting tribute to the departing Senior class. As an anti- climax to this exciting school year, our class picnic was held at the beach. At long last we were Seniors-the time to which most of us had been looking forward for eleven long years-Senior privileges! Skip Day, Kid Day, ten minutes early for lunch, etc.l Feeling we could not secure a better leader, we again chose Fred, with Bob Berdahl, vice- president, Shirley Mize, treasurer, Tookie Williams, secretary, and Miss Wilson as our sponsor. The most notable of our Senior activities were: The sponsorship of the annual home- coming weekend, the popularity contest which was climaxed by a dance at which the winners, Ardis McDonald and Joe Price, were crowned King and Queen of Mainland. An early Spring prom was given us by the Juniors at the Country Club. This was followed by the delightful and amusing comedy, It Never Rainsf' Senior skip day and our class picnic were combined. After our baccalaureate services, it was with awe and reverence that we donned the cap and gown for our impressive graduation ceremony which was held at the Peabody Auditorium. This was followed by our last get-together-the annual Senior Farewell Dance. Thus we have come to the end of four perfect years. As we stand upon the threshold of the future, it is with saddened hearts that we look back upon the quieted and hallowed halls of Mainland, but with determination that we step into a new life, with our class motto still before us-- Dare to do! Dare to dream! BE'r'rv RHODES, Historian. eliaaf WW and ldfamenf We, the Senior Class of 1944, being of fragile mind, and having a degenerate recollection and delicate body, and questionable character, and realizing that in a short time we must leave these portals to the onslaught of onrushing underclass- men, do hereby construct, publish, and declare this, our last will and testament, revoking all former wills in way and manner following: Item 1: First to the Senior teachers a fond farwell, to the Juniors, our distinc- tion of being the best graduating class in the history of the school, to the Sophomores and Freshme.n, we will our meek, loving attitude and our orderly class meetings, and to the faculty a new set of nerves. We leave this will with anyone with the perseverance to read it to the end. I have hereunto set my hand and seal to this Last Will and Testament on the seventee.nth day of the fourth month in the year nineteen hundred and forty-four, in an off moment. Attorney: SUzY HAYES Ufitnmses: CHARLo1'rE HANSARD ALVERNA Loclcwoon SHIRLEY MIZE JoYcE F ARLEY 5 M 0l0AeCy As I sat before the Swami, Avon Clark, in the Crystal Gazers Club, I thought it would be interesting if he could peer into the future and tell me what the jerks of the 1944- class would be doing 10 years from now. What he told me was quite startling, but it was worth the two bits I had to pay ms cashier, Lavada Buckles. The first episode took place in Bunnell. In the little ole school house, Pauline Bennett was teaching, and among her star pupils was Alfred Green, still giving those witty government definitions. Miss Bennett's suitor, Robert Blakeslee, was waiting impatiently for her to dismiss class as they were going across the road to the parson, Homer Clance. The parson's was the busiest place in the great metropolis. The day before, Parson Clance had married two couples-Elizabeth Allen to part of the Navy, and Mary Radford to another part. Sue Reed, a dainty thing, who had been disappointed in love, always sang the wedding marches. The two witnesses were Robert and Richard Walker. As a special advantage to the couples, who came in to be married, Marie Coats was selling genuine diamond rings for twenty-five cents, plus the tax, of course. Billy Thompson and Ann Pratt, a happy couple, were just getting on the bus for a honeymoon at the George Patterson's Wonderful Fish Trap. The driver of the bus was Keith Hageman, with Letha Willis conversing with him about the weather. QI-Ie's forever talking about it.j On the bus were a number of people that I knew. Among them was Suzy Hayes with her husband and her brood of twelve-eleven boys and one girl. fThe girl to break the monotonyj Dr. Frances Ditson and Dr. Red Griner were on their day to dedicate the new twenty-one and a half story National Ditson-Griner Foundation to each other in memory of their long hours and hard work to keep their first patient alive. Whizzing by the bus at a record-breaking speed of ten miles an hour was the Hall and Mize garbage truck owned by Handsome Hall and Taffy Mize, Inc. For a restful few minutes, the little group of people stopped at the Ham and Salami Joint, run, of course, by Ladell Hamilton and Louise Solona. At the counter drooling over Louise Drake's half-baked hamburgers, were Tommy Wine, Judy Wrenn, Margie Brown, and Junior Hawthor.ne, Hickvil1e's super street cleaners. QRomantic. ain't itfj The orchestra at this ritzy nite club was led by that man of men, Robert McElroy. The crooner was, naturally, that swoony guy of song, Fred Smith. Butch Waller was the fiutist and Doc Halperin was the trombone soloist. At the paino was VVre.nn Shorty Timberlake with his famous version of Chop Sticks. The floor show featured a new dance team, Steve Sirkin and Doris Swindle, who were exposing their dance step to the tune of This Is a Silly VVay to Spend an Eveningf' The Weed girls, dressed in beautiful balloons, were Charlotte Hansard and Tookie Williams, while Ted Boyd, being Hickvilleis most prominent needle salesman, was lurking near with his wares. As this happy crowd passed out fof the doorj they went by the doorman, Emmett Jasper, dressed in shiny tin buttons fyou can't get brass anymorej. Once again they were off to Patterson's Wonderful Fish Trap. Upon arrival they were greeted by the manager of the Utopia, Harold Cardwell, and his fiancee, Gloria Taylor. As the young couple walked up to the desk- clerk, who was none other than Virginia Graham, to sign the register, they were surprised at find Mrs. Redlinger and Mrs. Pounds slaving away at the switch- board. A call had just come in from Nita Finney and Donald Evans, managers of the Happier If You Stay Single Company, Inc. wishing the honeymooners good luck. They rang for the bellboy, Arthur Headley, to carry their luggage upstairs. After Mr. Headley relieved them of their tooth brushes, they were driven into the hotel fif you want to call it thatj dining room by the hostess, Evelyn Majors. They were seated by an open window, and gazing out they saw Wayne Shear, Oma Sandstrom, Henry Thorndike Wetherell, and Helen Wasserman, those champion tennis players from Bunnell College, playing tennis. The waitress, Henrietta Fulford, took their orders. The special on the menu was the super deluxe vitamins A. B. C. D. E. F, And How Are You Dish, prepared by master cooks, Joanne Cabeen and Virginia Rich. Seated at the table next were Professor Robert Owen Berdahl and his wife, Eleanora Baggett, and their guests, Laughy McLaughlin and Johnny Winn. During the meal the guests were entertained by a bubble dance by Hoppy Lockwood with Maurice Marsh holding' the bar of soap. Then came the chorus girls. Ah! Patricia Lathers was really a sight doing the can-can with the aid of Betty Yelvington, Frances Eubank, and Grace Larrimore. Kyle Chalker stood at the back of the stage and held the extra garters fjust in casey. As the star attraction for the -night, D'ick Forever Scratching Miller presented his heard about it all over Bunnell flea circus, aided by his fleas. He had the worst time trying to find them! After the elite dinner the happy group removed themselves to the sitting room where they enjoyed a polite game of strip poker. This game was really enjoyed by Gloria Bell and Nell Howell. Late the next morning, at five o'clock, they again boarded the bus and started back to Bunnell. fLong honeymoonll Arriving at Bunnell, they were greeted by gooey kisses from the mayor of that fair city, Joe Price and two of his stoogxes, Puggy Williams and Ralph Flippo. Back at the courthouse Mnators Gil Harris and Charles Davids were introducing a bill to provide for more hiding places for men on leap year. Judge Criss at the Pull 'em in and we'll Hang 'em Court was trying a case of reckless driving, the defendant being Rusty Neville and the hit and. scram victim, Doughtery Smith. The second case was a trial for sabotage. Charles Chambers was found guilty of putting acid on the wool at the sweater factory owned by two of Mainland's former sweater girls, Sunny Hayes and Jean Williams. Some of the gorgeous models in this factory were Joyce Farley, Doris Crump, Frances Blanyer, and Hazel Chaney. The inspectors were Fred Ruland and Loven Westberry. Interesting work-if you can get it! For the lovers' new home, the real estate dealers, Dewey Cooper and Freddy Frederick, choose a lovely little cottage with a tin roof. No story is complete without pesky persons always visiting newlyweds, so we'll have to tell you that Charlotte Lester, Alma McDonald, Judy Patrick, and Mildred Miller just worried the life out of these poor people. What happened after that, the great mind, Clark, wouldnit tell me, but he did say that there were a few great adventurous persons in the lot. Among these were Kenny Hall, Dainty Foots Rhodes, Subconscious Brown, Louise Carr, Elizabeth Kitchen, Ellogene Howell, and Wanda Canine. These people have gone great distances and, who knows, maybe some day Vivian Edwards can equal their record-Port Orange. -As neither one of us, Joyce Farley or Shirley Mizc, will claim or take credit for such a piece of work as this, we shall sign this- ANON ff ' fwiif-:bf f M- 22f+ffi:U, -4 ff'-,s rff-141, 2:i fL1'f 7 w wif ' ' I , :-If +w:'!3:xg,-fs':'5f vm vw ,- M ,. 1f!
